Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS)

The goal of SWIS is to assist newcomer families in every way possible so that they successfully integrate into the Canadian culture. We help these families to better understand the Canadian education system and are advocates in the schools and communities for these families.

We assist and provide the following services:

  • School Registrations – Click for 2024 School Registration Info
  • Homework Help
  • Translation Services
  • Assisting with Communication between Schools and Newcomer Families
  • Needs-Assessment and Follow-Up

SWIS works very closely with the Settlement Workers of the Eastman Immigrant Services (EIS), who do the general assessment and assistance of the family. All of SWIS’ services are cost free, because it is funded by Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

    What Our Volunteers are Saying...

  • When we were newcomers to Canada, EIS welcomed us. When we needed to learn English to work, EIS helped us. When we applied for nomination to the province and for permanent residence, EIS supported us during the whole process. We love them.

  • I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for the Canada history classes EIS provided. I am thrilled to share that I successfully passed my exam from first attempt, my score was 20 out of 20! The course was incredibly useful and gave me the knowledge I needed to succeed.
Thank you once again for your support and dedication. I truly appreciate all that you do for your students.

  • I immigrated from India this year as a Permanent Immigrant. I reached Steinbach in June this year. After reaching here my sister made an appointment with one of Settlement workers of Eastman Immigrant Services and took me there. Eastman Services helped me and my family get Social Insurance Numbers. I also got English classes from Eastman Immigrant Services which I will say are extremely good. Teachers are very good and use best teaching practices and great teaching materials. Eastman Employment Services helped me to write and update my resume. The Volunteer and Integration coordinator helps us to connect with community by organizing various events.
I am very thankful to Eastman Immigrant Services for helping us immigrants settle in the community in a meaningful way.

  • Volunteering at Eastman Immigrant Services has given me the chance to meet people from various cultural backgrounds, building my understanding of how to navigate and adapt to dynamic situations. This experience has been especially valuable as a newcomer without prior Canadian work experience. Gaining volunteer experience with a reputable organization like Eastman Immigrant Services has undoubtedly strengthened my resume, making me more competitive in the job market here in Manitoba.
