Dreamworks series writers what the heck?
Okay, so there was a cliff hanger finale for HTTYD: Race to the Edge, not totally unexpected since there’s an ongoing plot.
Second season of The Adventures of Puss in Boots ends on a cliff hanger?! Okay…there was a little bit of a plot, so not out of no where.
Second season of All Hail King Julien? Naw, my husband and I said. It’s too silly of a series we agreed. There’s no overall plot. There’s no way it would-WHAT THE HECK?! WHY IS IT ENDING THERE?! IT’S NOT SUPPOSE TO HAVE A CLIFF HANGER!
Seriously, I am now paranoid for a any second season for any Dreamworks netflix series now.
Not that it’s a bad thing, they were all actually good cliff hangers. I just wasn’t expecting it from King Julien of all series.
Reasons to Watch The Adventures of Puss In Boots
So, I finally got around and watched the season finale of The Adventures of Puss in Boots on Netflix and honestly…I think this series deserves more attention than it gets since I barely seen people talk about it on tumblr.
I’ll admit Dragons: Race to the Edge is the better series, Puss in Boots runs in second place for me for good reasons. Why? Here are a couple reasons to check it out:
1. Great cast of characters- The only canon character from the Shrek franchise that appears is Puss, everyone else is original for the series and I really enjoy them.
There’s Artephius the alchemist who is one of the funniest, and Dulcinea a female cat who I’ll admit I thought would be annoying at first but quickly proved to be one of my favorite characters. Which ties into my next reason.
2. Lots of female characters. There actually is quite a number of female characters in the show. Heck, in the second half of the season, we get introduce to female goblins, who aren’t bad guys I might add. In fact, a female goblin ends up becoming part of the main cast, and another character I really enjoy.
There’s also a cow who runs the bar, a female sphinx, to name a few more. There are also some female villains including the Duchess who is probably one of the more interesting villains in the series.
3. The animation is really good in this series, maybe not quite at Race to the Edge level, but close to it.
4. Since it is part of the Shrek franchise, it does use a lot of fairy tale characters like Jack Sprat and such, but we also get to see creatures like Golems, Sphinx, mermaids (and the ugly kind, not pretty kind), and fauns which pleased the folklore/mythology geek in me.
5. Voice actors. I am a voice actor geek, and they used a lot of well known voice actors and had fun trying to recognize them before I saw their name in the credits to see if I was right. (On that note, what’s really funny is that Jack McBrayer appears in one episode voicing a wishing star who only wants to help people…and I can’t help but be remind of another well known character he plays when you hear him talk.)
6. It is funny, it’s not as crazy/crack funny that King Julien gets, but it’s entertaining and has gotten caught a good amount of laughs from me. With that said, it does know when they need to get serious again, especially for the plot.
7. There is a plot! It does take awhile for the plot to get going, the characters don’t get focus on trying to recast the spell to protect the town until season 2, but they do return to it.
I think what I pondered most was how they were going to keep this plot going for future seasons, but season 2 actually ended on a cliff hanger. Is it as soul crushing as Race to the Edge season 2 was? No, but it definitely has caught my attention to tune in next season.
Is it a perfect series?
No, frankly there are some plot holes I feel they really need to explain (like how Puss taking the coin broke the barrier spell, and yet it sounded like there were treasures missing from the treasure room for years?) and do wish they tried to get back to the plot sooner.
However, it is a good series and is worth checking out. If you’re feeling the void from finishing season 2 of Race to the Edge, I suggest checking out the first few episodes and see if it’s your cup of tea.
If anything, it’s a good mindless show you can easily have in the background if you had a rough day or want to work on stuff.
Except for when the mouse shows up, but that’s regarding plot and only makes sense if you see the show.
@gullwhacker Just for you, honey! ^_~
“OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!” Dulcinea’s voice echoed through all the town. “OFF WITH ALL THEIR HEADS!”
The citizens of San Lorenzo screamed as the card shaped soldiers chased after them. Dulcinea laughed from her new throne made out of playing cards as she adjusted the heart shaped crown on her head.
“Ah, it’s good to be the queen,” she exclaimed.
Puss would have yelled at her to try to get his friend to come to her senses, but he was too busy trying to fight off the both the three of spades and a four of diamonds. He hissed as he felt a card soldier pass by him and sneered at the cut.
“A paper cut! REALLY?!” he yelled.
“Hey, Puss!” Artephius yelled from across the street with a book in his hand. “I did some research! Turns out that crown you bought for Dulcinea’s birthday is cursed!”
“No kidding!” Puss hissed as he blocked the five of hearts’ sword.
“Yeah,” Artephius said as he looked down to his book and just avoided having his head cut off by a passing five of clubs. “Turns out it use to belong to a ruthless queen! Was really obsessed with playings cards and cutting people’s heads-”
“OFF! OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!” Dulcinea cackled.
Artephius sighed as he placed a hand on his hip. “Dulcinea, you know better than to interrupt people!”
Puss growled as he leaped off the fountain, spun in the air and landed right next to Artephius. “What do we do to break the curse?!” he yelled and pointed to the city as the card soldiers tried to break into the houses. “Do I break the crown?!”
“No, no it’s indestructible,” Artephius said with an impressed frown. “Not to mention it’s dishwasher safe…whatever that means.”
Puss buried his face with his paws. “Then how-”
“You bake her tarts.”
Puss raised his head, blinked and prayed his misheard that. “Come again?”
“That old crazy queen loved tarts,” Artephius said as he pointed to the page. “Says here if you offer spirit that lives in the crown a whole tray of strawberry tarts, she’ll leave the host she’s inhabiting and the curse will be broken.”
“You’re joking?”
“I never joke about baked goods! It’s serious business!” He pointed to his house. “Better go get baking!”
Puss grumbled and vowed if he ever ran into that Alice girl again, he was going to have words about selling cursed items.
