Regiment is an artillery regiment which is part of the Regiment of Artillery of the Indian Army.

History

1211 Med Regt was raised out of nucleus of 121 Lt Regt (Congo) on 15 Jan 2020. The regiment completed conversion training and raising on 15 Jan 2021. Erstwhile 121 Lt Regt (Congo) has extraordinary & glorious history ever since its raising in 1956 which is the bed rock foundation for 1211 Med Regt.

121 Lt Regt was the senior most light regt in the Regiment of Artillery and was raised as 121 Hy Mor Bty[1] by Maj JB Contractor on 02 Jul 1956 as part of 35 Hy Mor Regt. On its raising the regt comprised of hill tribes and later changed into South Indian Class. Today the Regt is mixed class in composition.  Consequent to its raising the bty moved to School of Arty, Devlali as Demo Bty till 1962.

121 Hy Mor Bty had the unique distinction of serving in Operation des Nations Unies au Congo (ONUC)[2][1] from 26 Apr 1962 to 13 Feb 1963. That is why the Regt now uses the word ‘Congo’. Thereafter 121 Hy Mor Bty became part of 86 Lt Regt and served at Tibet border till May 1965.  It participated in 1965 and 1971 wars[3] at Sialkot and Chhamb Sector respectively and had its share of history and heroics.

In 1973, 121 Mor Bty[4] was dismembered from 86 Lt Regt and named as 121 Lt Bty. Later on 09 Aug 1984,121 (I) Lt Bty was granted the status of a Regt. Lt Col R S Alvar was the first CO of the Regt. Leading from the front, during its first tenure in Siachen Glacier, the then Commanding Offr of the unit, Lt Col (Later Col) Amritbir Singh Kalra recd Yudh Seva Medal’ in ‘Op Trishul Shakti’ wherein an enemy’s intrusion was successfully repulsed in Southern Glacier.

The unit mov on 12 Jan 2020 for conversion & raising as 1211 Med Regt on 15 Jan 20 under the able comd of Col HP Singh and completed its raising after carrying out conversion firing and 121 Lt Regt was disbanded on 01 Jul 2022.
