Biography
editEarly Life and Education
editDaniel Gomes was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1977 and grew up in Odivelas. From a young age, he showed a great interest in computer science, which led him to enroll at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, where he completed his degree in Computer Science in 2001. He worked as a researcher at the Institute of Applied Science and Technology (ICAT).[1] and the LaSIGE[2].
He later earned his PhD in Computer Engineering in 2007 from the University of Lisbon, with a thesis focused on designing large-scale systems for processing web data to automatically derive evolution trends (Big Data)[3].
Career
editFollowing his scientific research, he founded the Portuguese Web Archive[4] project at the Foundation for National Scientific Computing, which led to the public service Arquivo.pt, managed by the Foundation for Science and Technology[5].
Between 2004 and 2010, he contributed to efforts to create a Portuguese IT Workers Union[6].
Activism
editIn addition to his professional work, he has been an environmental activist advocating for a sustainable circular economy. In 2012, he founded the civic movement TaraRecuperavel.org[7] to raise awareness about environmental sustainability in Portugal. He has collaborated with ecological non-governmental organizations such as Quercus, Brigada do Mar[8], and the APLM - Portuguese Marine Litter Association[9]. He has also contributed to environmental sustainability laws[10][11][12]
Between 2012 and 2021, he authored AjoLogoExisto[13], a blog about activism and civic awareness.
Notable Works
editIn 2007, Daniel Gomes founded Arquivo.pt at the Foundation for National Scientific Computing (FCCN), now a division of the Foundation for Science and Technology. Arquivo.pt is a public service that allows users to search and access archived web pages from the Portuguese web since 1996. It is one of the main tools for digital preservation in Portugal.[14]
Daniel Gomes dedicated a large part of his career to the creation and development of the public service Arquivo.pt. For this purpose, he had to overcome a wide range of challenges, as a web archive is a unique information system not supported by major providers, nor is Web archiving an established area of knowledge.[15][16]
Daniel Gomes has been working on the research, development, and operation of web-based information systems since 2001, covering all stages of a product's life cycle, from theoretical scientific hypotheses to successfully executed services. He has managed software teams and open-source projects since 2007.[17]
In 2006, he created Visibilidade.net, a pioneering website that shared knowledge about Search Engine Optimization, Usability, and Web accessibility.[18]
He has given more than 200 invited lectures and has published numerous scientific and technical documents. He served as an independent expert evaluating research activities funded by the European Commission on Information and Communication Technologies and was the editor-in-chief of the book "The Past Web: Exploring Web Archives".[19]
Daniel Gomes has been a leading advocate for the importance of preserving digital memory. Under his coordination, Arquivo.pt has become a national and international reference, used by researchers, journalists, and the general public.
Daniel Gomes is a researcher in the field of web-based information systems. He has authored several scientific publications and participated in research projects aimed at improving how digital information is stored, preserved, and retrieved.[20]
