Population decline?

Claiborne Parish had over 32,000 people in 1930; the latest population estimate is about 16,000. In other words, the population is HALF what it was eight decades ago.

By contrast, the population of the U.S. is about 250% of what it was in 1930.

So, what happened in Claiborne parish? This isn't just notable, it is astonishing!

But aside from a reference to a single "ghost town" and a photograph of an abandoned house, the article doesn't even MENTION this, let alone explain it.
