Hamlets and Place Names

edit

Town of Colonie historian's website lists the following hamlets and places:

"What are the Hamlets and Villages in the Town of Colonie? There are two incorporated villages in the Town; the Village of Colonie and the Village of Menands, as well as several unincorporated, heavily populated areas; Latham, Verdoy, Loudonville, Maplewood, Boght Corners, Maywood, Newtonville, West Albany, Schuyler Heights, Roessleville, Mansville, Lishakill and Stanford Heights."

Currently almost all place names included in Colonie list are labeled as "hamlet". Should this be changed to reflect town historian's list?

Also . . . where in the heck is Mansville (was listed as Mannville on the wiki, I changed that to reflect town spelling)? I can't find any other reference to it anywhere and have never heard of or seen it mentioned.--Gnhn 16:41, 26 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

There is no such hamlet in the Town of Colonie as Lishakill. People who drive on Central Ave. (NY Route 5) who see the sign that says "Lisha Kill" sometimes think it is a community sign heralding the entrance to a hamlet of that name. It is a sign marking the road crossing the Lisha Kill (creek). Apparently the town historian does not know geography. Mannville is west of Watervliet and north of Schuyler Heights, taking the last turn off of Route 155 (Watervliet-Shaker Road) before entering Watervliet takes one into Mannville before one enters Stanford Heights. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 148.78.243.25 (talk) 23:59, 18 February 2007 (UTC).Reply

Two things- One the above unsigned comment (made by me earlier this year) should end with Schuyler Heights and not Stanford Heights. My bad! Second- the article on the Karner Blue butterfly says that it was named after the former name for Guilderland (which they say was Karner), is this true? I know there is hamlet named Karner in Colonie, so was it actually named for that hamlet? Was the hamlet named for a previous name for Guilderland? Did Guilderland ever have that name? Was the hamlet named AFTER the butterfly and not the other way around? Does any of this matter? I think it would be good to know and add to either the Colonie or Guilderland page (wherever it belongs), and if the butterfly is named after Karner the hamlet then the hamlet deserves its own page as well in my view (Karner is also the home to the regional distribution center for the post office, all out of region mail goes in/out through there, which is why that post office building is sooooo huge)Camelbinky 22:55, 23 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Issue with the map

edit

Did the town of Colonie annex Watervliet and Cohoes without me knowing? Wish they had asked me because I wouldve objected. Hmmm, if there isnt a map already made in Commons can someone have a proper one made that shows the correct boundaries of the town? (and do not forget that the villages of Menands and Colonie are included in the town and need to be red as well) Until then I'm removing this map, there's no reason for a really bad map to be included just because we dont have anything better for now.Camelbinky (talk) 02:50, 27 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
