As a matter of fact they aren't. Lots of people (including the parties and expert witnesses) have duties to the court, barristers are no exception to that. But most people aren't *officers* of the court which is quite a different matter. The roll of solicitors was maintained by the Master of the Rolls and solicitors were referred to as solicitors of the supreme court (subsequently "the senior courts"). None of those things are true of barristers. We aren't officers of the court and we have never been. The court might entrust a solicitor with various responsibilities (such as supervising an Anton Piller order) but would never do so for a barrister for exactly that reason. Court Officer / Officer of the Court

It is unclear why there is a distinction between "court officer" and "officer of the court." The American Bar Association lists all individuals who are sworn to an oath before the court as "officers of the court," including the judge, court clerks, bailiffs, and court reporters: https://www.americanbar.org/groups/public_education/resources/law_related_education_network/how_courts_work/court_officers/
