The result of the move request was: no consensus to move, particularly with the commenterss consideration of staple food. -- JHunterJ (talk) 13:53, 22 April 2019 (UTC)
– Additional changes:
- In conjunction with these page move requests, it is also requested that the page Staples become a redirect for Staples Inc.
Reason:
- Staples Inc. is a primary topic for the word “staples” and Staple (fastener) is a primary topic for the word “staple”. The other common use of the word “staple” in singular form is surgical staple but that is a subtopic of “staple (fastener)”.
Post-move cleanup:
- The “Staples Inc.” page would have a hatnote cross referencing the “staple” page (which is currently the “staple (fastener)” page) as a singular form of the word “staples” because the word “Staples” would redirect to the “Staples Inc.” page. The “Staples Inc.” page would also have a hatnote linking to the “staples (disambiguation)” page.
- The newly formed “staple” page (which is currently the “staple (fastener)” page) would have a hatnote linking to the “staple (disambiguation)” page. Mrbeastmodeallday (talk) 06:56, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
Supportthe "Staple", weak oppose the "Staples" move given that the fastener is commonly referred to in the plural. IMO the singular has a primary topic but the plural doesn't, similar to Well/Wells and Heart/Hearts. Also if the company was primary for "Staples" shouldn't it be at Staples per WP:NCCORP. Crouch, Swale (talk) 11:50, 14 April 2019 (UTC)- Neutral For the "Staple" move per Tassedethe, neutral because I don't think many people looking for the food would search with "Staple". I also can't see people looking for Staples Inc. with just "Staple". Note I disambiguated both Commons:Category:Staple and Commons:Category:Staples nearly 2 years ago, the singular formerly had a place in France at the base name and the plural had the company. Category:Staples (here) should also be disambiguated and I will nominate under C2D if the company move is closed as consensus against the move. Crouch, Swale (talk) 20:10, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
- Support both "Staple" moves per Crouch. Oppose "Staples" move. "Staples" should redirect to "Staple" per WP:PLURALPT; I don't accept the company is the primary topic.Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 12:21, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose all. Another common use of "staple" is for staple food. And that gets four times as many views as the fastener. Similarly Staples Inc. is more viewed than the fastener. Tassedethe (talk) 19:36, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
- Support. "Staple", referring to what you use to force two pieces of paper together, is the obvious and well-known use of the word. "Staples" should be redirected to the name of the company, IMO. --Comment by Selfie City (talk about my contributions) 00:38, 15 April 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose all. The plurals of both food and fastener are far too common for the company to be primary. My initial instinct was to support the fastener as primary for Staple, but the view counts suggest that the food is much more sought after than I thought. -- Fyrael (talk) 14:53, 16 April 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose these moves 98.239.227.65 (talk) 11:32, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose first, support others. Clear primary topic for Staple, but not for Staples, which is just as commonly seen as the plural of the fastener. -- Necrothesp (talk) 12:56, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
- Support strongly per nom, there is no reason whatsoever for Staple (fastener) to be disambiguated. It is rare for "staples" to refer to the plural of "a staple", the most common terms are "stapler" and "stapling". Thus, "staples" overwhelmingly refers to the company. Lazz_R 13:36, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
- Rubbish. People refer to staples as a plural all the time. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:49, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
- Yeah, sorry to be equally blunt but neither statement by Lazz_R makes much sense. The food is at least a contender, if not a better candidate, for primary based on page views and long-term significance, but somehow that's "no reason whatsoever". No idea what the thought process is for "staples" not being used very commonly as a plural. -- Fyrael (talk) 14:18, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
- Rubbish. People refer to staples as a plural all the time. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:49, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose all per staple food Red Slash 15:29, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
