In response to your more recent post there: well, no it wouldn't solve the problems. Our poor management of date formats is to a large extent caused by DA, which stops editors seeing the formats that our readers see, and that have been chosen already in an article.

So a British editor comes along to the article on J. F. Kennedy and adds a few dates in British format, since that's what she's noticed in display-mode. Then we have a mixture of formats in the article's main text, which is what our readers see. My auditing of date formats has shown this to be a major problem.
