Page rebuilt

Again, this talk page is rebuilt after archiving. Happy discussing! Deryck C. 07:38, 9 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Ahhhaaaa

A, well, quite funny comment is put onto the archive page:

This is an archive of old discussion. Read it if you like (although I don't think anybody, including myself, will). Any new comments please post to User talk:Deryck Chan. Deryck C. 07:40, 9 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Chinese name

edit

(original message on User talk:Mcy jerry)What is your chinese name? Deryck C. 09:00, 9 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Why ask? :) -- Jerry Crimson Mann 09:19, 9 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
Okay, so what does Mcy as in Mcy jerry stand for? Deryck C. 09:24, 9 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
Mcy is my initials. I've the same surname as Mencius. -- Jerry Crimson Mann 09:29, 9 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
But it spells "Mann"? Deryck C. 09:31, 9 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
Originally it spells "Mang". I changed it into "Mann", which sounds like a western surname. -- Jerry Crimson Mann 09:33, 9 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
Why don't you just hide the spelling of your surname then? (like what I'm doing) Deryck C. 09:36, 9 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
In fact I'd like to ask you: people ususally "hide" their first name but not surname (e.g. D. Chan), but why did you do the opposite? -- Jerry Crimson Mann 09:38, 9 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
I'm not really doing the opposite. Many people from my school hide his surname on electronic signatures such as those on Xanga, Wikipedia, etc. Deryck C. 09:42, 9 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
Well actually the common practice is to make the middle name, or the first name as well, or sometimes the full name, as initials. — Instantnood 09:55, August 9, 2005 (UTC)
"Common practice" depends on how we do it. Deryck C. 13:58, 9 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Chinese translation of the week

edit

Should it be part of WP:HKWNB, WP:TRTNB and WP:CRTNB, or attached to or devolved from them? — Instantnood 09:54, August 9, 2005 (UTC)

Separate thing. Deryck C. 13:59, 9 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
Hmm. Would be a great idea. Share your idea at the talk pages of those notice boards and get some feedback. :-) — Instantnood 18:18, August 10, 2005 (UTC)

Frankly I'm not too sure if it's gonna be sucessful. I know it's a great idea. — Instantnood 18:59, August 27, 2005 (UTC)

Eigenvalue, eigenvector, and eigenspace

Hi Deryck. You made this the math collaboration of the week. I have one request. Would you mind putting an edit summary when you do things of such caliber? (Well, edit summaries don't hurt in any case, and I think I mentioned this to you before, but at least in important cases, do provide one.) Thanks, Oleg Alexandrov

Thanks for your note. Deryck C. 09:52, 10 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Was this you?~ (Just kidding ;-) ) -- Jerry Crimson Mann 14:44, 10 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Could be. Any other secret u're hiding Deryck? :-D — Instantnood 18:32, August 10, 2005 (UTC)
That's not me. I've refused the nomination to the children's council. Deryck C. 05:02, 11 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Your signature

edit

I guess you can use a template under your user space (e.g. {{User:Deryck Chan/sig}}) for your signature. The html script is a bit too long. — Instantnood 18:18, August 10, 2005 (UTC)

I thought the signature field says "please don't use templates here"? Deryck C. 05:00, 11 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure, quite many users are using templates for signatures. — Instantnood 16:12, August 11, 2005 (UTC)
For example? Deryck C. 05:20, 12 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
Eh... I don't remember the names of these people... :-| If you've notice some signatures are like {{User:Username/sig}}. — Instantnood 15:36, August 13, 2005 (UTC)

Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase

edit

Much like noone calls DNA deoxyribonucleic acid, the common name of the protein is RuBisCO, it's simpler. Since RuBisCO it a better known name and would probably be a better name for the article if / is a problem. I'll move it.--nixie 05:25, 11 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

(also at User talk:Petaholmes) No, please don't. It's not a common practice to use abbreviations instead of full names as titles. Deryck C.

Actually that's not the case. The MoS says always use the most common name. That is why DNA is at DNA. --nixie 05:29, 11 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Is it? If that's the case I'll just leave it. Afterall I know nothing about Rubisco before I saw the article. Deryck C. 05:33, 11 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks!

edit

Er...thanks! Moldy bread—just what I've always wanted! I wish I could be more active in the SCOTW, but currently the topics are too far outside my expertise—I'm just an amateur. I'll keep watching the page though, in case anything grabs my attention. I'm very happy that there is a science collaboration; in fact, I remember when it was revived a little while back and that planted the idea for me to start the Medicine COTW. I'm extremely pleased with how it's turning out so far. Looking forward to working with you! — Knowledge Seeker 05:59, August 11, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks! BTW, you said you STARTED the MCOTW? Deryck C. 06:02, 11 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
Heh...yes, I started it back on July 25th. It was in response to a comment by User:PhatRita at the Doctors' Mess (for clinical medicine) regarding starting a similar project for preclinical medicine. Somewhat tangentially, I mentioned in passing that a medicine collaboration might be a good idea...then the more I thought about it, the more excited I got. As soon as PhatRita said he'd be interested too, I went about setting it up. I'm very proud of the support it's received from physicians and medical students (and friends) on Wikipedia, and I hope the level of interest remains (we're only in our third week). — Knowledge Seeker 06:16, August 11, 2005 (UTC)
In fact I'm one of the relaunchers of SCOTW, however I joined it after the relaunching program had been announced. Deryck C. 05:22, 12 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Congrats

edit

Hello! I see you are now a Form 4 student. Congrats!

As for the Flag of Hong Kong article, I wonder if you can take a picture of some official place in Hong Kong which contains a picture of the flag in a more prominent place. The pictures in the article look fine, but the flag seems somewhat diminished in importance, say, when compared to the policeman or the boat. --HappyCamper 06:13, 11 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Does it? It's not likely for me to go to Golden Bauhinia Square in the coming few weeks, so It's not likely possible for me to take pictures. Deryck C. 05:23, 12 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Clear Right

edit

{{clearright}} (which is actually <div style="clear: right; float: right"></div>) and <br clear="right" /> are different, though they can sometimes accomplish the same thing. I'm not quite sure what the difference is between the two; I think they might produce different results in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

If you want newcomers to welcome, just comb through recent changes for red talk page links. :) Oh, and squirrel talk... er, that's kind of hard to explain. XD Regards, Sango123 13:56, August 11, 2005 (UTC)

The result is quite the same. Just a quirk: If you want a line of space between the cleared stuff, br clear does it. While at the same time, clearright template makes no empty space. Deryck C. 05:25, 12 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hello Deryck what do you think can be to improve this article to save it from vfd? — Instantnood 10:45, August 25, 2005 (UTC)

My regrets, I'm not likely able to save the article. I've no knowledge about this person and I can't find real materials about him (persumably male). Deryck C. 12:03, 25 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
Thanks anyways. :-D — Instantnood 18:59, August 27, 2005 (UTC)
Seems like it's now less easy to slip into deletion ^_^ Deryck C. 14:26, 28 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Nominations for WikiMedals

edit

Hi Deryck. The WikiMedals aren't intended to replace Barnstars, but to complement them. Sorry if that wasn't clear. - Jakew 12:18, August 25, 2005 (UTC)

I don't think the current barnstar system needs an extra system to support. Deryck C. 12:22, 25 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Try FA?

edit

Do you think Sun Yat-sen will be ready for FA? Maybe you should try- frankly I think it would be difficult for it to pass this time, but at least we'll get some idea of what we must do to improve it. WP:PR doesn't get that much comment. Borisblue 02:46, 29 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Wait till the PR falls into the second half of the PR page. Deryck C. 13:36, 29 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Chinese vs. Japanese

edit

If you read other people response to my talk page, you will notice that my opinion regarding the topic is considered biased. I doubt such controveral and opinionated topic will make a good neutral wikipedia article. If you want to write an article, you are welcome to extract the list from my talk page. I have no plan to do it. Kowloonese 20:39, August 31, 2005 (UTC)

Later, maybe, I hope I'll have time to do that in the future. Deryck C. 09:18, 1 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
