Invite to join/help organize Wikipedia:Wikiproject LGBT studies

Hello. (Sorry for the form letter) In my various travels in Wikipedia, I have run across your name as someone who takes an active interest in LGBT articles. This is an invitation to check out a new project: Wikipedia:Wikiproject LGBT studies. The initial goal is to create an within Wikipedia a unicversity-level academic-quality reference encyclopedia for LGBT and Queer Studies-related topics. Demonstrator pen

First of all, excellent stub for demonstrator pen. I did a little cleanup and Wikification on it, but I'm not altogether sure what it's referring to by the article. Does it refer to any pen with a clear casing, or is it something more specific? SchuminWeb (Talk) 22:37, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

Two wikimania-related queries. Firstly, I hope you are considering attending this August. Secondly, we are planning a daily bulletin from the first through the 7th, covering the day's events and results. Among other things, I would love to have some puzzles to go along with each of those seven days. We may even manage a print run. Seven choice crosswords would be a fine start. What do you think? We could reuse crosswords from their brief stint on Wikinews, but I would love to have at least a few which were both new and slightly 'mania-related...

You removed my {{tone}} tag from the article without any comment on the talk page or changes to the article itself. The article has serious issues with unencyclopedic tone and you gave no response beyond "no it doesn't." The cats are supposed to replace the more general Member of the House of Reps category, this scheme was decided on by the Aust. politics wikiproject. I don't think spelling it out hurts.--Peta 12:09, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

CityRail

Hi - I used a capital 'S' for the '# Set (CityRail)' articles as the term is used as a name/proper noun, not a generic word - [1]. Tangara and Millenium trains are only informal names as well, but you were probably right in keeping them as the page title. SM247 20:36, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Emdash edit in Objective-C

I don't really think it's important enough to revert, but just to note: The rest of the article does not put spaces around emdashes, and it's not a common style in print. – Mipadi 14:35, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

It's ridiculous that you went through and changed the emdashes to have spaces around them, but what's even more ridiculous is that the version you cited doesn't even use the real emdash character; in fact, the first version to use real emdash characters (—) is this version; you'll note that there aren't any spaces around the dash in that revision. – Mipadi 00:18, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

I made the assumption that the dashes used in the earlier version were intended to be emdashes, and so the article originally had earlier put spaces around dashes. Do not forget that Wikipedia was not always on Unicode, so one can't assume that since "real" characters were not present then they weren't intended to be emdashes at all.

But, look, you're right, futzing over dashes is ridiculous. If you're that incensed at me trying to maintain continuity and maintain style which was in history (which I observe that you did change), then I'll revert myself. Dysprosia 04:07, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

It's not a big deal. I just don't think the double-dash protocol is correct, and I try to correct them when I see them, since Wikipedia is Unicode now; and normally in print, there aren't spaces around emdashes.

It wasn't replacing double dashes with emdashes that I was worried about -- in the previous version, spaces were put before and after the double-dash, but you removed these when you replaced it with an emdash. Dash advised me that spaces before and after emdashes was a regionalism, and so Wikipedia regionalism policy then took over; original regionalisms should prevail.

That's okay, but I don't see how having spaces or not detracts or not from having a professional appearance. I think the article looks quite well formatted regardless. Dysprosia 00:12, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

The article you originally linked to made no mention that GG disallowed the laws because Ruddock's said so (or even that Ruddock requested GG to disallow), but merely mentioned that the GG disallowed the law; in any case, this request was already mentioned in the previous sentence. I mentioned that the GG has the power to disallow ACT laws because this is not obvious to someone who is not familiar with Australian law (though this should probably be clarified). Territory law

The ACT and NT are not states and have no constitutional independence. Their legislatures were created by acts of the Commonwealth Parliament and they legislative only within areas delegated to them by the Commonwealth - the NT for example cannot legislate on Aboriginal land rights. Under both the ACT and NT self-government acts the Commonwealth Government can advise the Governor-General to disallow any territory act. This was done with the NT's assisted suicide act some years ago and now it has been done with the ACT's civil unions act. Adam 11:41, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm now advised that the facts are a little more complicated than my post above suggests:

Hi Adam. I caught your comment to Dysprosia. You stated that the Commonwealth can advise the G-G to disallow any territory act and referred to the Rights of the Terminally Ill Act 1996 (NT). My understanding is that the federal executive can only instruct the G-G to disallow a territory act if it is (or is claimed to be) ultra vires of the self-government acts. Otherwise it has to pass specific legislation abrogating the territory's power to make laws in a certain area (just as Euthanasia Laws Act 1996 removed the territories' power make laws permitting euthanasia, thus nullifing the RotTI). So in theory, the ACT could challenge the disallowance in the HCA - it'd just be pointless, as the Commonwealth can (and I think is planning to) pass legislation in same way as in 1996. --cj | talk 18:04, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
