Yes and No, or Both?
editThe evolution of the French language is a very interesting topic. Of course, French is no longer the lingua franca of Europe and the World's diplomatic élites but it still has a very strong status in diplomatic contexts (see for example: List of international organisations which have French as an official language, French is far ahead of all other languages except English). Also, French is de jure an official language in 29 countries (also more than any other language except English) and commonly used in 7 more, totalling 36 countries (see: List of countries where French is an official language). French also remains a widely studied foreign language all around the globe, although it's a light year behind English, and other languages, notably Spanish are catching up.
Similarly, French holds a strong position in the European Union but still weaker than that of English.
The use of French is rapidly increasing in Franocophone Africa (except in Rwanda where it's declining, and possibly in Madagascar where English recently became co-official). Read these pages:
French is also becoming a native language for a growing number of Africans. (See for example:"De plus, le français est également devenu la langue maternelle de plus de 30 % des Librevillois et il est de plus en plus perçu comme une langue gabonaise.", le français-revient en force)
French is also growing in neighbouring Anglophone and Lusophone countries but this growth is less significant than the growth of English in Francophone countries.
In France, the French language increases due to the growing population thanks to immigration but the language is also losing status in favour of English. Québec has a negative natural population growth and the language keeps its position only thanks to Francophone immigration and robust language policies. In the rest of Canada, knowledge of French is widely regarded as a useful competency, so lots of people are learning it but the relative weakness to English enormous. In Asia most people ignore the French language, although even here it's widely regarded as a prestigious language, in Cambodia it's regaining some of its past position but the general tendency is that English dominates, even in former French Indochina. The only exception might be Lebanon where French still serves as a second language.
This gives us a very unclear image of what direction the French language actually is going in. On one hand its status has fallen since the 1800s and on the other hand, the total number of French speakers has been steadily growing. The future of French is nonetheless uncertain because it relies on the development of Africa which has an exponential population growth but a disastrous economy and for most Africans, French is just a second language towards which they have mixed feelings. Therefore, there is a risk that more countries go the same way as Rwanda and tries to substitute French with the omnipresent English language, especially if France doesn't support it's language at home. - Btw I recently had some fun reading fr:francisation the authors of this article have a very optimistic view (and exaggerated in my opinion). You can compare that article with this blog: [1]. How can people come to two conclusions that different? Obviously the truth is somewhere in between. Aaker (talk) 17:29, 25 October 2010 (UTC)
- You're welcome! Also, here's an excellent site, where you can read about the linguistic situation in all countries in the world: http://www.tlfq.ulaval.ca/axl/index.html Aaker (talk) 11:52, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for May 20
editHi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Stealth (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
