Church-Turing thesis

Thank you for reverting my misguided edit. I was misunderstanding something, maybe the definition of hypercomputer. It is indeed correct to say that if we build a thing that computes (only) non-Turing-computable functions, and in doing so it computes something that "should naturally be regarded as computable" by whatever definition, then we will have refuted the thesis for that definition. I came here to thank you for helping to preserve WP:WEB as a descriptive instead of a perscriptive guideline, like you remarked. Alas, I've seen articles fall because AfD voters treat it as a demand. AfD

As an AfD expert you might like to pitch in at Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/2006_Wikipedia_CD_Selection which is the first time I (or rather an article I started) have been AfDed. It has gone back and forth between Wikipedia space and namespace. I won't mind of course if you totally disagree with my position: I don't find the judgement easy. Practically if people come to Wikipedia and use the inhouse search to look for "Wikipedia CD" they would never find it if not in namespace (which is why I think it is just about worth arguing the toss over). It looks like a shirt: the top is folded in on itself like a collar, behind his head is a little rectangular piece hanging down like a sleeve, and the portion around his head appears very much like the bottom of a shirt. "Of course you don't" I can see that the topic is utterly revolting to think about to some people apparently, so I won't put the comment in the caption; but it's really not at all impossible. Coming from a guy who yelled, "(a + b^n)/n = x, hence God exists, reply!" and a history of eccentric Mathematicians that went crazy/ran through city streets naked. The fact that who would leave an object unidentifiable to most should be proof enough of its possibility.

I really didn't think it would be such an egregious crime to put such a comment on there, especially after the question of its discussion on both the picture's discussion page and Euler's discussion page. So, I'll leave it at this: it really does look like a shirt. I can make a smegging picture with little arrows to what parts of the shirt are evident if more proof is really wanted, or if you think trying to settle this mini-mystery is too ridiculous, I'll drop the matter right now.Fephisto 18:11, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

importance to expand

Hi, I saw you changed for some articles the importance tag to an expand tag, I believe that these are not the same, and all the articles still lack importance, while the expansion is already included in the stub-remark (and well, I feel that expansion is superfluous, that is intrinsic to a wiki). I much feel like reverting the changes, but I thought it better first to discuss this. And in stead of being in smaller groups (the importance tags were dated by month, which gives a bit easier to handle category-size) they are now back into the huge group of 'articles to expand', where I am afraid not many people will look into (well, who looks into these categories, anyway). Warring States

Hi, Pascal. I support your move of Warring States to Warring States (novel) — the Chinese historical period is more important than the novel. (Since the Japanese Sengoku period is also called the Warring States period, there might be a case for a disambiguation page at Warring States (disambiguation), but that's a separate matter.) One small thing — in future, after you move a page and change the redirect, it's generally considered courtesy to check "What links here" to see if any links to the page have been broken. G Patrick Maxwell - Fluff piece is back

This fluff piece has been re-created. Would you take a look please. I would like some outside input here. For example, as a citation for Maxwell's becoming 'known as the first...' he used a commercial product catalog. A couple of other references are non-existent. He bolded "Best Doctors in America" as an award, which is not a very credible award (rather like the "whos who of college students and the like). Thanks.Jance 06:17, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

Hiram Polk

Another vanity /fluff piece without sources. I re-added an 'unreferenced tag' but I am sure that Droliver will promptly remove it. But where are the sources for the claims to fame? Look at "hand transplantation" in Wikipedia, and see if Polk is credited with this. Presumably, these surgeons were some of those referenced in this sentence, "While Chairman at Louisville, Polk trained more than 230 surgical residents, all of whom hold board certification in general surgery." And where is any reference that Polk is "known for his pioneering research on proper surgical antibiotic use to reduce surgical site infections" . And we are told that Polk is "also a figure well-known in the thoroughbred horse racing industry " and "Millsaps College named Polk it's 2005 Alumnus of the year." Sigh. I guess what I am asking is whether this is the kind of bio that meets WIki standards.Jance 06:44, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
