The Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go"

Hey. You wrote:

The song seemed to strike a chord in the USA as, while on one level it can be seen as a simple tale of a failed relationship, it can also been as capturing the spirit of the time after the assassination of JFK, racial tension, deepening problems in Vietnam and forseeing the end of the early optimism of the 1960s.."

But where does the quotation start? :o Purpleturple (talk) 03:39, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Please refrain from undoing other people's edits repeatedly. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia under the three-revert rule, which states that nobody may revert an article to a previous version more than three times in 24 hours. (Note: this also means editing the page to reinsert an old edit. If the effect of your actions is to revert back, it qualifies as a revert.) Thank you. 151.205.43.10 18:53, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Tony Blair talk page

I'm sorry SmokeyTheCat, I fairly rigorously undo anything vandalistic, including rude remarks, and in my hurry I saw your comment as being on the main Tony Blair page as opposed to the Talk:Tony Blair page, so I apologise, I shouldn't have removed it. Feel free to add it back. Thanks. MarkThomas 11:30, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Susana Reche

A tag has been placed on Susana Reche, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert notability may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is notable, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Random Passer-by 18:06, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

AfD Nomination: Susana Reche

I've nominated the article Susana Reche for deletion under the Articles for deletion process. We appreciate your contributions, but in this particular case I do not feel that Susana Reche satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion. I have explained why in the nomination space (see What Wikipedia is not and Deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Susana Reche. Don't forget to add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of each of your comments to sign them. You are free to edit the content of Susana Reche during the discussion, but please do not remove the "Articles for Deletion" template (the box at the top). Doing so will not end the discussion. Please state your case at the above spot.

Thank you for experimenting with Wikipedia by creating the page The limits to encyclopedias. Your test worked, and the page that you created has been or soon will be deleted. The problem with the article was that it was your original opinion. See Wikipedia:No original research. NawlinWiki 14:10, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

<<It was a very anodyne and inoffensive article which many people might have agreed with. You didn't give anyone a chance to read it.>> Doesn't matter if it was offensive, inoffensive, or the next Gettysburg Address. Because it's your original opinion, it's not appropriate for an encyclopedia. NawlinWiki 15:13, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Just browsing.... The limits to encyclopedias sounds interesting, and suitable as a Wikipedia essay or Userspace essay. Windows Vista

Hello; I've removed your comment from this article's talk page. Wikipedia talk pages are for discussing the article itself, and what can be done to improve it, not for general chat. There are plenty of good sites out there for discussions, but when we're here, let's focus on improving the encyclopedia. Thanks. -/- Warren 19:33, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Pardon me for butting in, but I saw your message on Warren's talk page and thought I could clarify. Talk page guidelines specify that Talk pages are not for general conversation. Keep discussions on the topic of how to improve the associated article. Irrelevant discussions are subject to removal (emphasis mine). That is, the talk pages can be used to discuss about the associated article - its strengths, weaknesses and how to improve it; and not for having a general discussion about the subject of the article. Your edit asked for opinion about Windows Vista, not the article about Windows Vista. As such, it was not a suitable topic for discussing on the talk page, and by Wikipedia policy, subject to removal. What you wanted to talk about is worthy of a discussion forum, not an encyclopedia. It was only this reason Warren had deleted your message, not to be rude to you or anything.
Also, please assume good faith before inferring anyone's actions to be rude - especially when it is accompanied with a polite message explaining why it was done. Hope you understand. You are most welcome to talk about the article, or even add to it directly. But be aware that we are limited to incorpotrating text that is attributed and free from personal bias. --soum (0_o) 12:02, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

It seems a bit rude and unnecessary of you to remove my contribution to the talk page on this. I didn't touch the main article and was making an intelligent contribution, hoping to get some feedback. SmokeyTheCat 11:25, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

It's policy: Wikipedia is not a discussion forum. It also says this right at the top of the talk page. Removing off-topic conversation is actually necessary to keep us focused on building an encyclopedia. -/- Warren 15:04, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Sarah Jane Morris

Hi, I fixed up the situation with the two different people of the same name.

The page that *was* at Sarah Jane Morris (disambiguation) didn't work because anyone typing in "Sarah Jane Morris" was going to go straight to the actress's page, and *that* didn't mention the singer, nor the dab page.... they'd never have come across them(!)

One solution would have been to put a "dab" line at the top of her page like

For the English singer, see Sarah Jane Morris (singer)

but I chose to move the actress's page to Sarah Jane Morris (actress) instead, and to make Sarah Jane Morris itself the disambiguation page.

Hope this helps.

Yes, this man's page needs some work. Although there are many polls which show how many stupid Americans think this man was a great president, I think it is quite difficult to convey to these people that his actions have ruined our nation. Notability of Gay Ex-Jehovahs Witnesses

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Gay Ex-Jehovahs Witnesses, by Kww (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Gay Ex-Jehovahs Witnesses seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Gay Ex-Jehovahs Witnesses, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 13:32, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Slackness

A tag has been placed on Slackness, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing no content to the reader. Please note that external links, "See also" section, book reference, category tag, template tag, interwiki link, rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article don't count as content. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the page and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Articles for individual songs

Please note, articles for individual songs should only be created if really necessary. This generally means they have to have been released as singles or be otherwise individually notable. An article that consists of Song X is a song by Band Y from Album Z or words to that effect is redundant and will be redirected to the album article. See here for guidance. Exxolon (talk) 22:02, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

The articles haven't been deleted but they have been redirected back to the Countdown to Ecstasy article. I've merged in the factual information regarding the My Old School incident and the sampling of Show Biz Kids to the main album article. The rest of the text was either redundant or commentary on the lyrics which is not useful. Exxolon (talk) 22:12, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
I'll try again. I have NOT deleted your work. I've simply edited the articles to point to the main album article. If you go to each article and click the 'history' tab at the top you will be able to access your version and retrieve whatever you like. However as each article stood there was insufficient information that could be sourced about each song to warrant an individual article on each song. You are better off expanding the Countdown to Ecstasy article instead. Please note that commentary on lyrics is not something that we normally have here unless it's sourced and relevant.
Please also note that attacking other editors, swearing at them and generally being unpleasant is not going to help. If you disagree with someone's actions, please inform them politely. We have policies on civility and personal attacks, I suggest you read them. It's also polite to give editors a chance to respond to each message on their talk page. Good manners

Wikipedia works because we all cooperate, which is why we have a civility policy requiring us all to speak politely to one another. Wikipedia's rules are numerous and complex, which is why we appreciate it when other users point out rules that we are not familiar with and correct errors that we have made. Some editors find it hard to work together with others, which is why we block people from editing if they are rude to other users. It would only take one more rude post of the sort you left for User:Exxolon before you, too, were blocked. -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 22:44, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Regarding songs

In general, the consensus has been that information about individual songs belongs on the page of the album, not on separate pages- that way, it's easier to find and use. There isn't much reason to have an article on a single song unless it's a song that has its own importance and there's so much to say about it that it wouldn't fit conveniently on the album page, and so many sources that it's clear that the song has a significance that goes beyond that of the album. We Are the Champions is an example of the kind of song that has so much material that it needs its own page. You don't have to feel badly for not knowing that consensus, but it is the way we generally do things. -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 22:50, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Apology accepted.

No hard feelings - if you need a hand with anything you are welcome to drop a note on my talk page. Exxolon (talk) 22:58, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Young Americans (album) vs Countdown to Ecstasy

The pertinent policy here is WP:OTHERSTUFF. If the individual song articles from the David Bowie album don't meet our criteria they too should be merged into the parent album article. Exxolon (talk) 21:39, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

I restored the redirects here; if you read an earlier message from me that's still on the talk page, you'll remember that individual songs only require separate articles if there's something verifiable to say about that song's importance. As a rule of thumb, you shouldn't create an article about a song without referencing at least two reliable sources that discuss the importance of that song. -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 11:25, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Date: 13:00 onwards, Sunday 10 August 2008

Hello,

I noticed that you have listed yourself as a Wikipedian in London, so I thought you might like to come to one of our monthly social meetups. The next one is going to be on Sunday 10 August, which might well be rather short notice, but if you can't come this time, we try to have one every second Sunday of the month.

If you haven't been before, these meetups are mainly casual social events for Wikipedia enthusiasts in which we chat about Wikipedia and any other topics we fancy. It's a great way to meet some very keen Wikipedians, but we'd also love for you to come along if you're interested in finding out more about Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, or other collaborative wiki projects too.

The location is a pub that is quite quiet and family friendly on a Sunday lunchtime, so hopefully younger Wikipedians will also feel welcome and safe. Alcohol consumption is certainly not required!

Although the meetups are popular, many UK-based editors still don't know about them. It would be great to welcome some fresh faces, so I hope you can come along.

Yours,

James F. (talk) 09:27, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Please forgive the slightly impersonal mass-invite!

Proposed deletion of Kingpin (chess)

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Kingpin (chess), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Richard Wright and Pink Floyd

I noticed you posted a note on the Pink Floyd talk page, with some formatting problems, then removed it. I'm not sure if this is the reason you removed it, but the news about Wright's death is already mentioned. In fact, during the week which followed his death, the article (and many other Pink Floyd related articles) were edited hundreds of times by people trying to add the information again, or change how it was presented. I presume this happens a lot when famous people die. If you think there is still something that needs to be changed in the article, feel free to post again. As to the formatting problem, a box around a paragraph usually means there is a space at the beginning. --A Knight Who Says Ni (talk) 17:53, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

Looking above on this talk page, you've had enough warnings. This is the final one. Tan | 39 00:18, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

Peasants Revolt

I reverted your addition. Please note that history articles should be sourced from works by historians. Etymologies should come from sources like dictionaries. The notion that "fob off" comes from the village of "Fobbing" is a factoid and unworthy for the encyclopedia. Itsmejudith (talk) 14:44, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Ricky Bishop

A tag has been placed on Ricky Bishop requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the article or have a copy emailed to you. re: protection of Teletubbies

This article was one of many that was protected in an attempt to prevent a highly disruptive banned user from further damaging Wikipedia. It is only semi-protected, so you or any other autoconfirmed user can still edit it. This banned user has operated over 100 sock accounts, but they usually get detected within a few hours and blocked, so semi-protection was used in order to "pre-block" the sock accounts, as it were. License tagging for File:LeslianaPereira.JPG

Thanks for uploading File:LeslianaPereira.JPG. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 17:06, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

It appears your comments at Template:Election box metadata were intended for a different article, but the way they were added they were posted to the main template instead of the talk page you originally intended. I've moved your question about privatisation to the template's talk page. You may want to go back to the original article's talk page and add them back. Reggae Greats: Lee "Scratch" Perry

You need to do something about your article on a compilation album called Reggae Greats: Lee "Scratch" Perry. the article is written entirely in personal opinion, you put no citations, and their isn't even proof that the CD exists. Judging by the editing history, it looks like you pretty much made the whole thing. YOu need to either fix it, making sure all the info is well cited facts, or get rid of the article all together.Iminrainbows (talk) 22:41, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Your Comments at RFCN

There is no official admin recall process yet. If you have a problem with an administrator, it is best to talk to them on an individual basis. Some admins have their own recall process set up, but the name you used in the header (LessHeard vanU) states on his user page that he has no official recall process, just talk to him, and if a bunch of people say it's a problem, he will consider giving up the mop.

Thanks! / edg 14:40, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
Just as a matter of idle curiosity why did you want to delete the article? Like I say I don't mind but I don't understand. Okay, she was of very minority interest but how is Wiki improved by her absence? I've been an editor here a few years now and It's never occurred to me to want to delete any article.
Just wondered.  SmokeyTheCat  •TALK• 10:19, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
I didn't reply at length because you had proposed that I had some mania for deleting articles—it didn't bode well for a serious conversation. The Giselle Lorimer article was unverfiable and uninformative. I didn't see a way I would ever be able to improve this article, so I proposed deletion. No one in that AfD objected. I was a bit surprised you didn't participate.
If you think Giselle Lorimer is likely to become notable in the near future, you might request it be restored to your usespace for further work. The best way to do this is to ask one of these administrators. When the article is userfied, tag it with {{Userspace draft}} to keep it from being XfD'd again.
You can also create an original research article on another wiki, such as wipipedia or SMiki.
Wikipedia has plenty of well-developed porn, BDSM and author articles. This was not one of them, and because of the lack of available references, it was not going to get better. / edg 10:59, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
I very much doubt that Giselle Lorimer will ever become notable. Her books are very much minority interest and will probably stay that way. She seems uninterested in publicity anyway. There are numerous hits on her but all they just just cite her three books and her publisher. Not a word of biographical information. She interests me tho and I wrote her a snail mail but I doubt I'll ever get a reply. One of those many little small mysteries of the WWW.
Anyway, thanks for the information, happy Wiki editing and I'll see you around no doubt, George George aka  SmokeyTheCat  •TALK• 08:42, 20 June 2010 (UTC)
I can imagine erotica writers often choosing to remain anonymous. For what it's worth, in an author article the work, and then the career, are usually more important than personal details. Hardcore biographical information is not needed in most BLP.
I don't know anything about Lorimer, but I'd say if John Norman wrote in pseudonym with no other connected notability, reliable sources probably would not exist for him either, even tho he should be notable for the Usenet-documented (thus self-published) cult that sprang up around his Gor novels, which most agree are poor writing but distinctly valuable as erotica. The anonymous graphic artist Dolcett has been deleted at least 3 times, despite having a somewhat interesting publication history, a passionate fanbase, and occasional WTF notice in somewhat straight internet-based media.
Until someone does some serious research on these topics, I don't see how they can have Wikipedia articles—without the Wikipedia:Reliable sources restrictions, Wikipedia would quickly be packed with articles comprising rumors, scams and promotion. I wish it were otherwise.

Your signature

Hey, sorry to bother you, but your signature seems unnecessarily distracting to me. Would you possibly consider making it smaller? Thanks, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:58, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

I've replied to your post at HJ's talk page. You might ask Jack Merridew. He can help you. For an example of his work, look at my sig. N419BH 17:16, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Copy it right off this page, don't click "edit" then copy as you'll get the <nowiki></nowiki> tags (you don't want those). You'll get  SmokeyTheCat  •TALK• that, which is a bit smaller. I'd still talk to Jack though. He can help you get the code to work better and do other interesting things like multiple colors. For example, my talk page links from the "BH" and my userpage links from the "N419". You could do something like Smokey(TheCat). Just a thought. N419BH 17:35, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

No problem, glad you like it. It's still a touch on the big side though (basic rule is if it covers up the bottom of letters like "gpjq" etc. it's too big). You could add a <small> tag at the very beginning and a </small> at the very end to get this: Smokey(TheCat). I let Jack know about this, he can do something fancier. N419BH 18:17, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

How about:

The current one is pretty garish and you need to change it. The one BH offered is a tad better in that it integrated the talk link, but it's using the from-hell font-element.

re All Wi Doin' Is Defendin

Okey-dokey. It's your perfect right to remove the tags. I will send it to WP:AFD where it can now get a full discussion. However, in my opinion, there is little chance that the article will be retained. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm sorry if an article that you worked on and like gets deleted, that's a bad feeling, but standards are standards. We can't have articles about every song, we'd be swamped. If you do want to preserve the article, you should quickly add proof of notability per WP:SONG, or at least per WP:GNG showing some press mentions of the song or whatever, if these exist. Thank you for your contribution, sorry again if you lose an article that you have grown fond of, and I look forward to your future contributions to the Wikipedia. Speedy deletion nomination of Fifteensquared.net

A tag has been placed on Fifteensquared.net requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. ttonyb (talk) 06:02, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

Category:Wikipedians_open_to_whale_squishing

Hi. Category:Wikipedians_open_to_whale_squishing, which I see you added yourself to, has been nominated for deletion. Your comments at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2010_October_14#Category:Wikipedians_open_to_whale_squishing would be appreciated. What purpose do you think this category has? --SmokeyJoe (talk) 12:35, 17 October 2010 (UTC)

Azed Examples

Hi Smokey,

With great reluctance, I have removed your example clues from the Azed article. As well as some intrinsic problems with their text, you’ve put the clues into The competition section where they interfere with the main explanation of the set-up. Could you perhaps clean up the text and give them a section to themselves (possibly just before or after the Well-known Azed competitors section)?

What do I mean by "clean up the text"?

1. You didn’t quote either clue accurately. Before I decided that I had to delete, I had already corrected Don Manley’s clue to get rid of your non-anagram. I’ll let you check with & lit and adjust Colin Dexter’s. Your version wouldn’t have won the First Prize.

2. Get rid of your personal opinions – "elegant", "admirably brief", "very neat" (see NPoV, Verifiability). As it says at the beginning of Verifiability, "The threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth— whether readers can check that material in Wikipedia has already been published by a reliable source, not whether editors think it is true." I agree with the opinions you expressed but you and I are just little editors hiding behind pseudonyms. Our opinions must not feature in the encyclopedia - unless we can provide in-line citations to show that they are opinions previously expressed in a reliable, authoritative and verifiable source.

3. Take Don Manley out of the main text. His authorship of the clue may merit mention in a footnote but not in the main body of the article, I feel.

4. If you want to credit Don Manley, do the same for Colin Dexter

5. Perhaps revamp your layout a bit. The way that sample clues are shown in Cryptic crosswords looks better to me and is obviously considered satisfactory. It makes sense to have a consistent layout for similar pages where possible.

Also, would you like to consider whether the inclusion of a clue from Jeremy Morse (the other member of the Big Three) would improve the balance? My favourite clue of his (one of the eight used by Azed in his tribute puzzle No 1906 and described as "wonderful" by him in the Slip) is that to RAMILLIES. Its ingenuity and erudition took my breath away when the competition results came out (this was before the Internet and Google made everybody experts on everything). You may prefer a different clue, of course, but I think it should be one of Azed's eight. Since this is a brand new suggestion from me, I’ve written some text for RAMILLIES and include it below.

Marlborough’s second crusher in conclusive quartet of victories (9) [1]

for RAMILLIES. Ramillies, in Chambers as a hat or wig, was also the second of Marborough’s four major victories in the War of the Spanish Succession.[2]. In the wordplay, Marlborough’s second is "a", "mill" is the crusher and these go inside "ries", the last four letters of "victories". The whole clue defines Ramillies, the battle.

Incidentally, Wikipedia's motto is be bold, isn't it? And when you do, it seems as though everyone jumps on you and tries to kick your teeth in (today it's me, tomorrow Joe Frazier, perhaps). I think the basic problem is that Wikipedia is using unpaid amateurs while trying for the standards of a top-grade professional encyclopedia. An employee at Encyclopedia Brittanica would expect to take a long time before getting things right first time – here it’s a nasty shock when you're told you haven't. There’s a very steep learning curve but a lot of satisfaction when you get it right.

Sorry – I forgot to leave you your original text to re-edit. Here it is below complete with non-anagram.

Examples of elegant winning clues include:-

  • Item gran arranged family slides in. for MAGIC LANTERN (An anagram of ITEM GRAN with CLAN inside and giving a literal definition.)
  • A representation of M Hilda say. for SHIELD-MAY (A shield-may is a woman warrior and this admirably brief clue by Don Manley references Ex-Prime Minister Margaret Hilda Thatcher in a very neat anagram.)

What Keeps Mankind Alive?

Hi. Rather than propose this for deletion, I'm going to suggest removing the POV and merging what's left of it to The Three Penny Opera where it belongs, and leave a redirect. It might still get deleted however if you or other editors cannot find references for it.--Kudpung (talk) 08:36, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

London Wikimedia Fundraiser

Good evening! This is a friendly message from Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry, inviting you to the London Wikimedia Fundraising party on 19th December 2010, in approximately one week. This party is being held at an artistic London venue with room for approximately 300 people, and is being funded by Ed Saperia, a non-Wikipedian who has a reputation for holding exclusive events all over London. This year, he wants to help Wikipedia, and is subsidising a charity event for us. We're keen to get as many Wikimedians coming as possible, and we already have approximately 200 guests, including members of the press, and some mystery guests! More details can be found at http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/London - expect an Eigenharp, a mulled wine hot tub, a free hog roast, a haybale amphitheatre and more. If you're interested in coming - and we'd love to have you - please go to the ten.wikipedia page and follow the link to the Facebook event. Signing up on Facebook will add you to the party guestlist. Entry fee is a heavily subsidised £5 and entry is restricted to over 18s. It promises to be a 10th birthday party to remember! If you have any questions, please email me at chasemewiki at gmail.com.

Hope we'll see you there, (and apologies for the talk page spam) - Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry (talk) 23:59, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

Please don't create essentially unsourced biographies. The link you used was not a reliable source. I have made an attempt to source the article, but I can find little indication that she is notable. Fences&Windows 21:23, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

speedy delete reasons

Hi Smokey

your nomination of Amazing Mr. Waller, Vol. 1: Jiving with Fats Waller deletion was declined, because your reason was not a valid speedy delete reason. If you think no one will contest your deletion proposal you can use prod. Otherwise you will have to go with the effort of an AFD if there is controversy potential. John Perkins (Royal Navy officer)

Dear Smokey, I noticed a discussion thread on the Trafalgar discussion section about black british sailors. The subject is somewhat a hobby of mine. I have been researching and writing about John Perkins (linked above) for a while. He was, to the best of my research the first black british officer to serve in the armed forces of the crown. Arguably there were people who served in the Ethiopian and Black regiments during the American War, like Colonel Tye although these were militia units and not regular army units. I wrote the wikipedia article and the article in the BASA newsletter (no.47) and an article on the http://www.blackpast.org website. I'd be more than happy to dicuss Perkins or any of my other research with you if you're interested. All the best, Corneredmouse (talk) 11:43, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

I'm not sure where this is specifically dealt with although I shall take a look at a few books tonight. I do know that there was a significant enough presence that at least one black sailor is included in the sculpture at the foot of Nelson's column in Trafalgar square. The sailors who posed for the sculpture (if I remember correctly) were sailors who served on the Victory during Trafalgar. The link to the National Archives page is [2]. Also a link to an article in the Independent [3]. Also, Tom Wareham at the Museum of London in Docklands is quite a good contact. He has access to a lot of facts and figures. Duke Ellington's "Guitar Amour"

Hi Smokey,

The Duke's composition "Guitar Amour" appears on several recordings:

  • Paris Blues (United Artists, 1961) - two versions (one titled "Bird Jungle") recorded on 2-3 May 1961
  • Duke 56-62 Volume 2 (Columbia) - titled "Bon Amour" recorded 25 October 1961
  • Midnight in Paris (Columbia, 1962) recorded 30 January 1962
  • In the Uncommon Market (Pablo, 1986) recorded 6 or 7 February 1963
  • All Star Road Band (CBS) recorded 31 May 1964

I would suspect that the version you are looking for is on either of the last two albums. A good source of Duke detail is at the Duke Ellington Panorama.

Hope this is of assistance

Speedy deletion nomination of Milpharm

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Milpharm requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. NTox · talk 15:11, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

As reviewing administrator, I deleted it. I think they are just a generic drug manufacturer, and therefore not significant unless there is some special reason of major business presence or market share, that would take references. Companies with products of their own --those are the ones where there is might be an implied claim to importance even if nothing more is indicated. DGG ( talk ) 00:14, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
