Interview
editI'd be happy to participate in an interview. Skype poses something of a problem for me because I live in a rural area and have a broadband wireless internet connection that works poorly with any kind of VOIP because of jitter on the uplink. I'll see what arrangements I can make.

- I would also be very pleased to talk to you. I've been listening to the podcast for a while now, and am very keen on what the program is doing for the community. Tim Vickers (talk) 17:51, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
- You seem to be 17h ahead of me (US central time zone), so if we did the interview on Sunday morning your time it would be Saturday afternoon my time. How would 5-6 pm Saturday (my time) suit you? I think that would be about 10-11 am your time. Tim Vickers (talk) 20:08, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

Geisha and Client
editI would respectfully ask you to reconsider your suggested downgrade of the Geisha and Client Featured Picture on the following grounds. (1) It is a rare glimpse of a real geisha and client involved in traditional ozashiki. (2) This is a photo of the last geisha in Japan to "turn collar" in the 20th century. (3) Featured status reduces the changes that it will be frivolously deleted. (4) It was of high enough caliber to be sought after by a text book publisher. (5) It is a revealing picture to those intimate with the nuances of the subject matter. (6) It is an aesthetically pleasing picture overall, though not artistically perfect. Please take these points into consideration. Thank you for assessing this critically. ToddLara (talk) 04:20, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Mr Lama
editMr Lama, nice to hear from you! :) I was just thinking of you a couple of days ago. I found your business card and I thought, "Hmm, I wonder how the lama is, haven't seen him around much latey." The DoS looks fantastic, well done to all involved (and nice picture of you :)). Volunteering for OTRS is quite easy, just go here and add your name to the list. There are instuctions at the top of the page. About IRC, I'm afraid I'm with you on that boat. Daniel very patiently helped me get onto IRC the other night but I haven't been brave enough to venture beyond the WMA channel yet. :) I shall add you to the WMA press list. Radio/TV/newspaper in NSW? It's just an informal list of people who don't mind being contacted but it doesn't obligate you to actually do anything. I started it when I handled the request from Channel 10 for someone to go on "9 am with David & Kim" as we stuffed them around a bit with Angela agreeing to do it but then having to pull out when she and Tim moved up your way. It was then really difficult to find someone else willing to step in. So I started the press list as a starting base for future requests. If you need help with anything you can always email me or ping me on gtalk, sarahewart at gmail dot com and I'll try to help. Take care, Sarah 00:08, 19 March 2008 (UTC) PS I'm going to put my meetup pictures up soon. Sarah 00:08, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Re: the Sydney Journal
editHi there, Just thought I'd drop you, and others from the recent meetup, a line and mention that the first edition of the Dictionary of Sydney's online, peer-reviewed journal is now live.
The Sydney Journal is the first (and most academically rigorous) "product" of the Dictionary. It will be a quarterly publication with a variety of texts from upcoming Dictionary articles and is hosted by UTS E-press. This edition features 4 thematic articles, 6 ethnicities and 5 suburbs - all specifically related to Sydney.
I hope you find it useful and interesting - If nothing else it's essays are eminently referenceable for their corresponding articles here on WP.
Best, Witty Lama 12:55, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
- Nice! I'll look forward to reading more of those as they come out. --bainer (talk) 01:47, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Speedy deletion of Butt Hole Group
editPlease refrain from introducing inappropriate pages such as Butt Hole Group, to Wikipedia. Doing so is not in accordance with our policies. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. KnightLago (talk) 14:39, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
- Question, how did you move the page back to its proper place? When I attempted the move it told me that I couldn't move the page back because the destination had history and that I needed to delete the page before the move. Thanks. KnightLago (talk) 14:43, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
- I know you didn't create the page. I reverted the user's 5 vandalism edits with Twinkle. I think you moved the page right before I reverted those edits. So when I reverted, Twinkle looked at the author of the page, which would be you due to the move, and left the warning there. I know you weren't at fault, but Twinkle thought you were. editG'day
editG'day esteemed person who has expressed interest in Sydney based meetups at this page (I hope that's the correct wording for the formal greeting!!). You may have heard that Australia is to have its very own 'chapter' of the Wikimedia Foundation - and further, there's a meeting coming up to discuss / enact the chapter's incorporation (details here). I'm afraid that I don't know too much about the details of what this entails, other than having a private hope that we might get a secret handshake, and maybe cheap coffee at wikimania (this is a poor attempt at humour - I'm sure that the Chapter's do great work, and it's a good thing that Australia is to have one).
If you're interested in meeting up this weekend (the set date is the 20th) - or later, then please do head over here and sign up, or make a comment at the talk page... the drive to create the chapter has largely come from another town in Australia that I'm afraid I haven't actually heard much about.. and anything they can do.... right? - cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 11:11, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
Drinks and a wiki chat?
editG'day sydneysider - fancy a 'not quite a meetup but a few drinks' sort of thing? - We can chat about the new aussie chapter, the price of eggs and have our very own 2020 Wiki Summit! - or just sink a couple of cold ones and gass bag about the good 'ol days of wiki, when an editor could get some repsect (not a typo)! I've suggested something here so take a look and sign up if you're up for it... cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 02:28, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
Links, etc.
editI agree about neutrality. It would probably be necessary to create a separate legal entity to deal with a paid newsroom editor.
Regarding my "academic" writing, it consists of pleas to my colleagues to get involved with Wikipedia. Here are the relevant links:
- http://www.mediatropes.com/index.php/SpontaneousGenerations/article/view/1017/1104 in Spontaneous Generations
- http://www.hssonline.org/publications/Newsletter2008/NewsJan2008Ross.html - this was in the printed newsletter that goes out to members of the History of Science Society (most professional historians of science). All three of the printed letters in the next issue, April 2008, mentioned it (positively) including a lengthy letter from Alan Rocke, User:Ajrocke. Unfortunately, I don't think the letters to the editor are online.
The first article also has a few references at the end that you'll want in your bibliography if they aren't there already.--ragesoss (talk) 03:09, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
Your Thesis
editHi there. I heard that you were working on a Wiki-related thesis. I think this is a great idea. And I have two suggestions. First, on the issue of whether there should be a newsroom over at WikiNews, Sue Gardner was a journalist and manager at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation before joining WikiMedia; you'd get some good insight from an interview with her. Second, on the lit review, I thought I'd point you toward a discussion among historians prompted by Sage Ross' writings: [3]. This has been expanded on several Talk pages here at WP; let me know if you're interested in following-up and I'll dig the links up for you.... Good luck! -JTBurman (talk) 20:32, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

editHi,
Brief intro -- I'm a graduate student at Cornell University in the United States who's interested in studying how editors collaborate on Wikipedia, specifically looking at ownership. Fancy attending a meetup? - We've got some interested Chapter stuff to chat about, no doubt there may be some tales of Arabian Nights (or at least Egyptian conferences), and it just generally felt like it was about time..... head over here if you're interested.... do feel free to wiki-edit away in the usual fashion too if you've got any other ideas! cheers all, Privatemusings (talk) 07:25, 29 July 2008 (UTC)you've been spammed in this nature because you signed up as interested in being notified about this sort of thing.. hope that's ok!

Motto of the day
editHello, I notice you're using one of the {{motd}} templates, run by Wikipedia:Motto of the day. You may have noticed that some of the mottos recently have been followed by a date from 2006, or on occasion simply "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". The reason for this is that Motto of the day is in some very serious need of help. Participation in the project, which has never been especially high, has dropped considerably over this past summer, to the point we have had several days where no motto was scheduled to appear at all. Over the past several weeks, I've been the only editor scheduling mottos at all, but there aren't enough comments on some of these mottos to justify their use. If we do not get some help - and soon - your daily mottos will stop. In order for us to continue updating these templates for you, we need your help.
When you get a chance between your normal editing, could you stop by our nominations page and leave a few comments on some of the mottos there, especially those that do not have any comments yet? This works very simply; you read a motto, decide whether or not you like it, and post your opinion just below the motto. That's it - no experience required, just an idea of what you personally like and what you feel reflects Wikipedia and its community. If you do have past experience with the project, then please close some of the older nominations once they've got a decent consensus going. There are directions on the nominations page on how to do this.
If you have any questions, please let me know, or post on the project's talk page. I'm looking forward to reading your comments on the suggested mottos, and any additional suggestions you'd like to make. Until then, happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 01:41, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
Greg Urwin
editWitty lama,
First, I really would like to thank you for the message you left me about Greg Urwin's article. I found an Australian newspaper article about him online and thought he had a really interesting biography. I'm happy I could help a little. Thanks again!
Secondly, and more importantly, Urwin's article is currently on the front page of Wikipedia's DYK section right now! I apologize if this is sooner than you had hoped. Unfortunately, I'm not an editor and have no control over when an article gets posted to DYK. To get on the DYK front page all articles have to be nominated within five days of their creation or expansion. (In this case, five days from September 5th) Again, I really apologize if you cannot show the article on the front page to his family.
On last thing I'm hoping you might be able to help me with if possible. I'm almost positive that the date he became Secretary General is wrong in the article. It's listed as May 16, 2004 in Urwin's article and the Pacific Islands Forum. A couple of news articles seem to have him taking the Secretary General position in January or February 2004 instead.[4] Would you happen to know the correct date because I can't locate it anywhere?
Thanks again. I hope I was able to help out even a little bit. Have a great day! Scanlan (talk) 22:26, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

A Sydney Meetup
editG'day all - I'm dropping this note in to let you know that there's to be a Wiki Meetup the week after next, on Tuesday, 21st at 18:00 at The Paragon in Circular Quay. If you've ever thought about popping along to one of these, but haven't had the chance - now's the time! If you love the idea, but the time and / or place don't quite work for you, please do feel free to wiki edit away at the meetup page and I'm sure we can sort something out :-) Meetups are a great way to share wiki-thoughts, meet wiki-friends, and generally learn how to prefix all areas of your life with wiki- :-)
It's a very friendly bunch, and we're hoping to be able to formally collect membership fees and details for the Australian Chapter (did you know that we're the only current english speaking chapter? Join now for kudos and future bragging rights!) - as well as just generally have a good 'ol time. I look forward to seeing you there :-) best, Privatemusings (talk) 07:48, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

editHey, I was wondering if your thesis that you mentioned on WW was online. I'd be interested to read it. Cheers, JACOPLANE • 2008-11-12 17:04
G'day Wikimedian :-)
editWhilst it's quite likely you'll have heard this news on the grapevine, in your email inbox, or even in person - I thought that it was sufficiently exciting to warrant giving each of you a 'new messages' orange bar! This particular orange bar has been brought to you to let you know that Wikimedia Australia is now open for members!
I'm not on the committee or anything, and that's where the credit is due in getting everything to this point, but I think it would be absolutely fantastic for folks who wish to support the australian wiki community, to go ahead and sign up - we're quite likely to be the world's fatest growing chapter at the moment! Join Us :-)
Here's a little more about membership, and the mailing list in particular is well worth signing up to as well, and is a good forum to get answers to any questions answered, or to share any ideas. I've dropped these notes in under my own steam, and you've received one because you're on this list - feel free to ask me any questions, or anything - I can certainly point you in the right direction :-) cheers all, Privatemusings (talk) 04:05, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
Wiki Christmas Meetup
editG'day all - I'm hoping that I might persuade you along to a Wiki christmas celebration / meetup on december 18th :-) - The meetup regulars are a friendly bunch, and we're very much hoping to get a few new folk along to chat about all things Wiki (and there are apparently some exciting things in the pipeline! Come along to find out a bit more ;-) - you can sign up here - and do feel free to edit that page with any more ideas or suggestions too :-)
Hope to see you there - I've heard a rumour that the first drink is on the highest placed Australian in the current arbcom elections.... Privatemusings (talk) 23:44, 4 December 2008 (UTC)ok, so I started that rumour too....
