Bubba hotep (talk · contribs) - I noticed this user fairly early on in his wiki-career and was impressed enough to hand him the The Exceptional Newcomer Award before his first month was out. Bubba hotep has added a significant amount of material to Wikipedia articles since he started editing in August 2006, and his editing has been strong and even ever since. He has created over 200 articles, largely as part of WikiProject Albums. He appears to enjoy doing a variety of mundane housework like clearing backlogs in the categories, recent changes and anti-vandalism. He was fun to work with on getting a page I'd been pushing to Featured Article status, doing a lot of copy editing and sentence restructure to get my sometimes extended rambles into shape. Bubba hotep engages with other users on article talk and user talk pages, easily adjusting to the relevant level of comment. He has a steady stream of advice requests and is helpful and polite when asked, giving assistance with what policies and guidelines mean and how they apply to newer users. I saw him show sound judgment and consistency when checking Recent Changes to action those pages needing it, and saw he provided links to the particular policies in his edit summaries when relevant, though the recent edits for WP:ALBUM seemed to have dragged him away from that a bit. --Alf melmac 22:00, 24 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Co-nomination - I first ran into Bubba while on RC patrol where he beat me to the revert several times in one day. Since then, his hard work has never ceased to amaze me. Whenever In need of a second opinion, whether about catching tricky vandalism, using approriate userspace warnings, work with with WP:AFD's or pretty much any other topic I could think of, no matter what the question Bubba has always had a well thought out and appropriate answer, an answer that I would expect from an administrator. Bubba's tenacity at working through tedious tasks, such as his massive work in the cleanup of WP:ALBUM, would make him an asset no matter what administrative backlog was in need of clearing. Overall, I think that Bubba is one of the most well rounded Wikipedian that I have ever worked with here, with work on RC patrol along with his exceedingly appropriate reports to WP:AIV, commenting on Articles for Deletion and a general willingness to help anybody requesting assistance. There is currently nobody else on Wikipedia who I feel would make a better use of the tools, if given them. It is for all these reasons and more that I offer my Nominiation -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 23:50, 24 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- Candidate, please indicate acceptance of the nomination here: I humbly accept my nominators' most gracious proposal. Bubba hotep 23:57, 24 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- Questions for the candidate
Dear candidate, thank you for offering to serve Wikipedia in this capacity. Please take the time to answer a few generic questions to provide guidance for participants:
- 1. What sysop chores do you anticipate helping with? Please check out Category:Wikipedia backlog and Category:Administrative backlog, and read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.
- A: Whilst I am primarily here on Wikipedia to improve and expand the encyclopedia, I will no doubt be most active in WP:AIV. This is the area where I see the most activity when patrolling recent changes, and should never be underrated. Of course, you tend to notice a lot of transgressions while watching RC, and I would anticipate working in several spin-off areas in addition to blatant and discrete vandalism (the latter being the "real" enemy of Wikipedia) – WP:RFPP, WP:RFCN, and another back-logged area, WP:CSD. I would also like to think that I have enough common sense to judge consenus and policy (and disregard my own opinion) to close AfDs. I do not intend to work in the field of images until certain policies are ironed out – however, this does not preclude me from chipping in with the most obvious cases of orphaned images and such, when I see them, or the more obvious cases of fair use abuse, come to that.
- 2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any with which you are particularly pleased, and why?
- A: This may sound spurious, but I am proud of each and every one of my contributions. Each of the 200+ articles which I have created were not there before I created them, so I like the fact that I have expanded the number of articles on Wikipedia. Each of the vandalism reverts I have made have restored integrity to the encyclopedia, and each {{db}} or {{prod}} I have added, always in good faith, has also retained the pride that we all feel when coming here every day. I suppose I am most proud of the small things: the edits to Oriel College to help it on its course through the FAC process; the huge housework task I took on at WP:ALBUM (once I started, I couldn’t stop) but the end result is that more people will be able to expand and improve those articles because the oft-overlooked basics are now covered (stub-sorting, infoboxes, categorisation, etc). I am also pleased with being able to engage people in discussion to determine how to improve aspects of the Wiki, and how they feel confident that if they were to engage me first, they would more than likely get a considered answer. In truth, I am proud of a number of the articles I created, but my inherent humility prevents me from mentioning them. :)
- 3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or have other users caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
- A: Conflicts are almost negligible, in fact I can't think of any that have caused any lasting impression or damage. Users causing stress? When you are introduced to wholesale defacement of the Wikipedia by raining diffs on #vandalism-en-wp and Recent Changes, yes, it is stressful, but what I always remember is that we have the policy, tools, and methods of discussion to combat these sources of stress. As long as I can deal with these instances to the best of my ability, I can't get stressed because I know back-up is just around the corner. More importantly, I do not take things too personally. Furthermore, I always delve more deeply into situations: Good faith and sympathy are important to me. I would much rather defuse a situation by looking at it from all angles in situations which are not clear-cut, if I make a mistake, I correct it as soon as possible and let the editor know this. If I see another editor getting a hard time, I will try to intercede and attempt to make a bad situation good. A simple "Welcome" or such can make the world of difference between whether an editor stays or goes. In the long term, I stand by the comments I have made about a varied Wiki-diet, which I allude to below in General comments.
- General comments
- See Bubba hotep's edit summary usage with mathbot's tool. For the edit count, see the talk page.
- To go some way in explaining my editing patterns since I registered on August 12, 2006 – August, September, and part of October were almost entirely spent creating new album articles and getting to know Wikipedia. Some time in October, I got involved with vandalism reversion which, naturally, led to involvement with AfD and speedy deletions and around the end of November, I found myself hanging around RfA. In January, you will notice an almost unnatural spike in my contributions which is solely down to the work I did sub-stub-sorting articles at WP:ALBUM (I think we cleared around 3,000 of them) and also adding infoboxes (probably cleared nigh-on 1,000 of them). I continue to do this work whilst keeping a firm eye on vandalism, etc. In fact, now the backlogs are cleared on that project, I have already started devoting more of my time to the other areas which I feel take an important place in Wikipedia as a whole. I will reiterate (it's also on my user page): "I learned a long time ago that variety is the key to combatting Wikistress" – and in the place where I am now, you could read that to mean that I am more than keen to avoid adminitis! An approach I adopted from my learned friend, Alf.
Please keep criticism constructive and polite.
