Welcome message
editHello, and welcome to Wiktionary!
If you have edited Wikipedia, you probably already know some basics, but Wiktionary does have a few conventions of its own. Please take a moment to learn our basics before jumping in.
First, all articles should be in our standard format, even if they are not yet complete. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with it. You can use one of our pre-defined article templates by typing the name of a non-existent article into the search box and hitting 'Go'. You can link Wikipedia pages, including your user page, using [[w:pagename]], {{pedia}}
, or {{wikipedia}}
.
Notice that article titles are case-sensitive and are not capitalized unless, like proper nouns, they are ordinarily capitalized (Poland or January). Also, take a moment to familiarize yourself with our criteria for inclusion, since Wiktionary is not an encyclopedia. Don't go looking for a Village pump – we have a Beer parlour. Note that while Wikipedia likes redirects, Wiktionary deletes most redirects (especially spelling variations), in favor of short entries. Please do not copy entries here from Wikipedia if they are in wikipedia:Category:Copy to Wiktionary; they are moved by bot, and will appear presently in the Transwiki: namespace.
A further major caveat is that a "Citation" on Wiktionary is synonymous with a "Quotation", we use these primary sources to construct dictionary definitions from evidence of the word being used. "References" (aka "Citations" on Wikipedia) are used predominantly for verifying Etymologies and usage notes, not the definitions themselves. This is partly to avoid copyright violation, and partly to ensure that we don't fall into the trap of adding "list words", or words that while often defined are never used in practice.
- Note for experienced Wikipedians:
- Wiktionary is run in a very different manner from Wikipedia and you will have a better experience if you do not assume the two are similar in culture. Please remember that despite your experience on Wikipedia, that experience may not always be applicable here. While you do not need to be an expert, or anything close to one, to contribute, please be as respectful of local policies and community practices as you can. Be aware that well-meaning Wikipedians have unfortunately found themselves blocked in the past for perceived disruption due to misunderstandings. To prevent a similar outcome, remember the maxim: be bold, but don't be reckless!
- Having said that, we welcome Wikipedians, who have useful skills and experience to offer. The following are a couple of the most jarring differences between our projects that Wikipedians may want to learn up front, so things go smoothly for everyone. Changing policy pages on Wiktionary is very strongly discouraged. If you think something needs changing, please discuss it at the beer parlour, after which we may formally vote on the issue. You should also note that Wiktionary has very different user-space policies, we are here to build a dictionary and your user-page exists only to facilitate that. In particular we have voted to explicitly ban all userboxes with the exception of
{{Babel}}
; please do not create or use them.
We hope you enjoy editing Wiktionary and being a Wiktionarian. Equinox ◑ 18:44, 9 May 2020 (UTC)
"Inflection tables"
Why don't people include [declensions] when creating new entries?
edit(Regarding IVA-helikopter edit) Because it's too hard and confusing. 😅 I have looked at the declension template several times, and I get a headache every time I try to decipher and decrypt it. Recently I have started looking at similar words (e.g. katt, bord, gå, springa, etc...) and just copy/paste the declension from them instead. --Christoffre (talk) 07:45, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
- That's wholly understandable, and I didn't mean to come off as rude. Linguistics is a complicated subject, and learning how to use the coding, templates etc. on this type requires you to study them a lot. I didn't exactly know all that from the getgo either, but it's easy to forget that newer editors don't have the same knowledge you do. Glades12 (talk) 07:53, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
- I didn't interpret it as rude. I could really hear you sigh as I read it 😆 --Christoffre (talk) 16:06, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
Hi. You're good with declension tables. Can you please look at DVD and see what might be wrong? I managed to get everything correct except singular nominative indefinite, which now ends with a colon. --Christoffre (talk) 07:12, 29 May 2022 (UTC)
- This is a tough nut to crack. First, I'll note that the correct definite singular according to SAOL and SO is DVD:n, not DVD:en; I don't see "DVD:en" used much from cursory web searches and /eːɛn/ is an awkward vowel combination to pronounce in our language. With this in mind, I actually made an attempt to add a table before you did, but I can't get it right either. My own approach was
{{sv-infl-noun-c-r|2=DVD:|3=DVD:e}}
. This gets everything right but the singular genitive indefinite, which becomes "DVDs" instead of the correct "DVD:s".
- The MediaWiki software we use here isn't equipped to deal with colons in titles in general (just look at all the unsupported titles in Category:Swedish terms spelled with :), which becomes a problem since they're used so much in Swedish and Finnish orthography. We could theoretically make the table right in this case with lengthy code like this:
{{sv-noun-irreg-c|DVD|DVD:n|DVD:er|DVD:erna|DVD:s}}
, but considering how all initialisms are declined with colons in Swedish, that seems vastly inferior to just updating one of our regular templates to deal with them better. Declension and conjugation templates run on modules, so we'll have to ask someone else with better programming skills. Dunno where to do that though (spamming other people's user talk pages sounds like a bad idea). Glades12 (talk) 08:33, 29 May 2022 (UTC)
- I attempted the same approach as you, with the same result of "DVDs". Well... At least I now feel less bad for not being able to figure it out myself.
- About that lengthy code; why cannot we use it? If nothing but a temporary solution until someone solved the problem (which may take some time since no-one have managed it for nearly 20 years) --Christoffre (talk) 08:51, 29 May 2022 (UTC)
- I guess it'll have to do for now. I don't like using "irregular" templates for nouns that are completely regular, that's all. Glades12 (talk) 09:02, 29 May 2022 (UTC)

- Ahh... I completly missed the "irreg"-part --Christoffre (talk) 09:16, 29 May 2022 (UTC)
"Wiktionary's rules probably say you shouldn't write stuff like this on your user page, but I don't care"
editlol, we are the people who get our hands dirty and get stuff done. Equinox ◑ 22:51, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
Swedish-specific form-of templates
editPer several discussions over the years, I am obsoleting all of them in favor of generic templates like {{infl of}}
, {{noun form of}}
, {{adj form of}}
, {{verb form of}}
, etc. If the template is sufficiently high-use, I've deprecated it, otherwise I've deleted it. In both cases, the deprecation documentation or deletion message indicates the replacement. If you have any questions, please let me know, thanks! Benwing2 (talk) 01:00, 24 June 2023 (UTC)
Ladd
editDoes "Tills alla dör" clarify that "ladd" refers to hashish elsewhere? I think the intended meaning of the quote might be "Rich people in Östermalm do drugs (cocaine) in secret, while we do drugs (hashish) openly." --Alla tajders (talk) 16:06, 26 June 2023 (UTC)
- Maybe. To be honest, I'm not sure exactly what the 22-year-old guy meant. The first sub-quote (about hash being used as self-medication) is the end of a passage about how young, socioeconomically deprived people suffer from ADHD and depression but reject prescribed drugs. After that comparison between rich and poor Stockholmers, the book drops the topic of drugs and continues (in the author's own words) on other social problems like a lack of education and jobs.
- Neither before nor after does the author explain precisely what was meant by "ladd". I was in a bit of a rush when I added that quote (and am not immersed in drug-related slang), so I may very well have misinterpreted it. Glades12 (talk) 18:54, 26 June 2023 (UTC)
- Pretty sure it's cocaine if there isn't any more context. I'll remove the sense and move/change the quote. Alla tajders (talk) 20:30, 26 June 2023 (UTC)
