Etymology

edit

From an earlier *rrësye, rendered as masculine arsye (definite singular arseu, indefinite plural arsenje) in Buzuku and feminine arrësye in Budi; from Latin ratiōnem (reason). Latin ō > Albanian e is regular in older borrowings, developing into -ye when followed by a syllabic consonant. The initial a- is prothetic.[1][2] Alternatively, a borrowing from Vulgar Latin *arratiōnis from the same Latin source.[3]
