From Proto-Germanic *handugangaz, derived from the phrase *ana handų ganganą ~ *gāną, whence Old English on hand gān and Old Norse ganga á hǫnd. Compare the pair tō hlāfe gān (“to go to eat bread,” literally “go to bread”) and hlāfgang (“going to eat bread,” literally “bread-going”).
