===Flags again===
I'm reverting [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_shipwrecks_in_January_1887&type=revision&diff=1120702197&oldid=1120702025 this edit] you made. Firstly, I object to the false edit summary. Flags do not fall under [[MOS:NUM]]. The relevant guideline is [[WP:FLAGCRUFT]], which shipwreck lists do not fall under. Secondly, the ''flag'' and ''flagcountry'' templates are complicated in their usage, changing them to ''flagu'' can have unintended counsequenses. <nowiki>{{flagcountry|UKGBI|civil}}</nowiki> gives this - {{flagcountry|UKGBI|civil}}; changing it to <nowiki>{{flagu|UKGBI|civil}}</nowiki> produces {{flagu|UKGBI|civil}} with its meaningless initialism. UKGBI was created as a shortcut to save having to type "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland" every time. You altered the January 1887 list, but there are hundreds of shipwreck lists. ''If there is to be a change'' away from using linked countries and city states, then this needs a full discussion and probably a RFC at Wikiproject level. Linking

I've removed a lot of links from Fosterfields, but they keep getting put back. Maybe if you took a crack at it, it wouldn't just be me and they might heed WP:OL. MB 03:54, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox linking of locations

Hey,

I think per MOS:SEAOFBLUE, there is little controversy over [[city, state]] or [[city]], state, but not [[city]], [[state]] (and of course the same thing with province, region, whatever.

But some infoboxes have |city= & |state=, which if used, create the same back-to-back links. I generally change these by blanking the state and using |city=city, state (and give an edit summary of MOS:SEAOFBLUE. There are editors who undo my changes (without really explaining why, like "restore infobox parms").

Some infoboxes avoid this by having |location=. {{infobox}} has both. See Hawthorne High School (New Jersey) as a recent example where I have been reverted. That uses the school infobox. (that is not the best example because it also has a county technically separating the city and state, but I've see the same thing in other articles without county). We don't need to change any templates, just get editors to understand that SEAOFBLUE applies to infoboxes as much as prose. Any suggestions?

We could start discussions in the infoboxes of some of the widely used infoboxes (e.g. school & university) about updating the documentation to deprecate |state=. We could boldly edit the template documentation citing SEAOFBLUE as existing consensus. We could have an RFC. MB 00:21, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, MB. I have infobox-editing rights, but find it hard to locate offending overlooks at the template pages. Tony (talk) 01:02, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't follow this. I'm suggested we just need to edit he template documentation to align it with SEAOFBLUE. This doesn't need TE rights, template doc can be edited by anyone. MB 01:59, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Forgive my scant knowledge of things technical. Tony (talk) 09:32, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This is really about the application of WP:GEOLINK within infoboxes. I started a discussion at Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style/Linking#Implementation_in_infoboxes. MB 20:40, 25 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Script-assisted fixes

Hallo Tony, your changes here broke a link by "correcting" the link American Alpine Club to american alpine club. I've re-corrected. Can your script look out for proper names, and for links which turn red after your edits? PamD 11:33, 13 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks; I saw that and took it as a red link. It shouldn't have been downcast, but the question is why it didn't stay blue (links are not case-sensitive, I thought). Tony (talk) 11:35, 13 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Links are not case-sensitive to initial capital, but definitely thereafter (lots of book/film/album titles etc which are distinguished from common usage by caps for 2nd etc words, though I can't instantly find an example!). I've also rescued the inline link you discarded, as it's a valid ref: things used like that are often malformed refs and worth including. PamD 11:43, 13 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Quick example: Harley street, Harley Street. PamD 11:45, 13 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Pam. Tony (talk) 11:45, 13 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@PamD:Occupations are conventionally not in upper case. For me, at issue is not whether the AAC ought to be upper case or lower case, but whether "Executive Director of the American Alpine Club" is the occupation of the subject. Arguably, "alpinist, author and educator" can be used as his occupation, what is listed in the inbox is incorrect. --Ohconfucius (on the move) (talk) 16:09, 25 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Satish Modh, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Aircraft maintenance engineer.

Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (Canada)

Please do not move this page without discussion. It is a sub-page of the capitalised Aircraft Maintenance Engineer article and its capitalisation should remain aligned with its parent. If you wish to de-capitalise both articles titles, please gain consensus at Talk:Aircraft Maintenance Engineer first. — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 07:59, 29 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I've listed the related article for downcasing. There is utterly no reason for initial caps in either article. Next we'll be capping Garbage Collector, will we? Tony (talk) 08:01, 29 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not seeing an RM listing for it. Aircraft Maintenance Engineer should also be downcased, per MOS:JOBTITLES, MOS:DOCTCAPS.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  08:06, 26 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've listed both, at Talk:Aircraft Maintenance Engineer.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  10:48, 26 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Date range to present

Regarding [1], MOS:TOPRESENT says: If the "from" date has an internal space, a spaced en dash is used. Did the script suggest the change to unspaced en dash? PrimeHunter (talk) 22:16, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You're quite right. Thanks for picking that up. Yes, the script did do that. @Ohconfucius: Tony (talk) 23:48, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Rishi Sunak International trips

Hi there, what is the reason behind removing flags on the above page? The article follows precedent in using the same style as the international trip pages for Boris Johnson, Theresa May and David Cameron as well as similarly made pages for US Presidents. 1234567jack (talk) 13:06, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Flags should not be mere decorations, especially in inboxes. Tony (talk) 21:47, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

removal of the flags

The script-assisted change created clunky areas where flags should be, where now it features things like “China Chinese” and “Canada Canada.” The inclusion of flags is pretty standard for treaty pages. Reducing overlinking is one thing, but I think this is going a bit far. XTheBedrockX (talk) 11:00, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, thanks for picking this up. Which article, so I can fix it??? Tony (talk) 11:06, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

But you've now edited upon the version I changed. What to do about your changes if I revert? Tony (talk) 11:11, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It seems easiest if I simply remove the repetitions manually. Tony (talk) 11:12, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Just self reverted. The change i made is small, so you can revert now if you want XTheBedrockX (talk) 11:13, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well now I've manually removed the repeated words. Do you still want to go back? Tony (talk) 11:14, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I could, but honestly…this page is a bit of a mess now. I’m gonna add the flags back manually. Please be more careful next time with script editing. XTheBedrockX (talk) 11:18, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Flags again

I'm reverting this edit you made. Firstly, I object to the false edit summary. Flags do not fall under MOS:NUM. The relevant guideline is WP:FLAGCRUFT, which shipwreck lists do not fall under. Secondly, the flag and flagcountry templates are complicated in their usage, changing them to flagu can have unintended counsequenses. {{flagcountry|UKGBI|civil}} gives this -  United Kingdom; changing it to {{flagu|UKGBI|civil}} produces  UKGBI with its meaningless initialism. UKGBI was created as a shortcut to save having to type "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland" every time. You altered the January 1887 list, but there are hundreds of shipwreck lists. If there is to be a change away from using linked countries and city states, then this needs a full discussion and probably a RFC at Wikiproject level.
