* {{tq|... that when launched in 1896, the freighter '''''[[SS Sir William Siemens|Sir William Siemens]]''''' ''(pictured)'' and her sister ships were the largest vessels on the [[Great Lakes]]?}}
This claim is not found in the article, which says that ''Siemens'' was "one of the largest ships on the Great Lakes at the time of her ''construction''" (my emphasis), not at the time of launch as the hook says. Neither of these claims are stated directly in the cited source; the hook seems to be put together from several bits of info in the source, namely that (a) ''Siemens'' sister ship, ''Coralia'', which launched five months earlier, was "longer than any other ship on the lakes" (though at what time is not stated); (b) the three sister ships were built to identical specifications; and (c) a ship longer than the three of them was launched at a later date than the ''Siemens'', the implication being that this was the first ship to surpass ''Coralia'', and therefore ''Siemens'', in length. I feel like this is pushing the boundaries of synthesis for a Main Page appearance. Revision as of 01:13, 7 January 2023

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 03:24 on 5 January 2025) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors with "In the news"

Errors in "Did you know ..."

  • ... that when launched in 1896, the freighter Sir William Siemens (pictured) and her sister ships were the largest vessels on the Great Lakes?

This claim is not found in the article, which says that Siemens was "one of the largest ships on the Great Lakes at the time of her construction" (my emphasis), not at the time of launch as the hook says. Neither of these claims are stated directly in the cited source; the hook seems to be put together from several bits of info in the source, namely that (a) Siemens sister ship, Coralia, which launched five months earlier, was "longer than any other ship on the lakes" (though at what time is not stated); (b) the three sister ships were built to identical specifications; and (c) a ship longer than the three of them was launched at a later date than the Siemens, the implication being that this was the first ship to surpass Coralia, and therefore Siemens, in length. I feel like this is pushing the boundaries of synthesis for a Main Page appearance. Sojourner in the earth (talk) 01:13, 7 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in "On this day"

Galilean moons

"1610 – Through his telescope, Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei made the first observation of Jupiter's Galilean moons: Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto, although he was not able to distinguish the first two until the following night."

Galilean moons says "he was able to see celestial bodies more distinctly than was previously possible. This allowed Galileo to observe in either December 1609 or January 1610 what came to be known as the Galilean moons" and only that he wrote a letter containing the discovery on 7 January. The moon articles vary; Io states 7 January (and distinguished on 8 January), Europa 8 January, Ganymede 7 January and Callisto just "January" - Dumelow (talk) 07:37, 5 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Note that this January 7 OTD has not been updated since the 2022 post. It might be easiest just to swap this out and place in the ineligible section with explanation.—Bagumba (talk) 08:31, 5 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The articles now say Io and Europa on 8 January, and Ganymede and Callisto on 7 January. Nevertheless I've kept it in and removed another one instead, so that we don't have three from the 20th century. — RAVENPVFF · talk · 23:16, 5 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
if we're not certain of the date, it should probably be removed regardless though...  — Amakuru (talk) 23:35, 5 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Pope Innocent III

"1198 – Lotario de Conti was elected as Pope Innocent III; he later worked to restore papal power in Rome."

The articles linked don't seem to be certain on his name, neither has "Lotario de Conti". The Innocent III article uses both "Lotario dei Conti di Segni" and "Lotario de' Conti" while the election article uses just "Lotario dei Conti di Segni" - Dumelow (talk) 07:35, 6 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

"1972 – Following Pakistan's defeat in the Bangladesh Liberation War, President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto released Bangladeshi politician Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (pictured) from prison in response to international pressure."

The sentence is the article is not supported by a citation (the next sentence is cited to a December 1971 news article) - Dumelow (talk) 07:41, 6 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Not a topic expert here, but I think we might have the date wrong. It looks like Mujib flew from Pakistan to England after his release. NYT says he arrived in London at about 6:30 AM on January 8. This piece from the Daily Sun places Mujib out of prison for a dinner with Bhutto on 7 January before his flight. I'd also love a second opinion smell test on the YouTube sources used in that article. Copyvio? Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 08:29, 6 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Birth and death years, stated only in the lead and infobox are uncited (I checked the references at the end of the first sentence in the lead) - Dumelow (talk) 07:51, 6 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I've added a reference for her year of death and age at death. Those two data points correspond with the given year of birth. I'd say that's good enough. Schwede66 00:15, 7 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
