Information icon Hello, I'm CastJared. I noticed that you recently made an edit to Category:Television shows scored by Gustavo Santaolalla in which your edit summary did not appear to describe the change you made. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. CastJared (talk) 15:12, 11 January 2023 (UTC)

Blueprint (Alice Bag album) moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Blueprint (Alice Bag album), is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Don't move an article that I'm actively editing. Why would you do that? ―Justin (koavf)TCM 03:49, 12 January 2023 (UTC)

American Socialists

Koavf: May I ask: what is the rationale for removing "American Socialist" from the profile for Jack Stachel (and others)? - Aboudaqn (talk) 14:10, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

I thought that I included an edit summary, so sorry if I didn't, but anyone in Category:American communists is already subcategorized in Category:American socialists, so it's overcategorization. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 20:12, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

Unicode

[I'm moving my last comment up so it doesn't get lost in TLDR.]

In your first edit summary, you said, "This should be the characters themselves, not graphics." That suggests you didn't notice that they were the characters themselves, plus the graphics. You did not add the characters, you only removed the graphics so those characters would not be legible. This is equivalent to changing "A" to ")" as the character at code point U+0041 in the table at Basic Latin. In that article, the browser will convert the code points to graphics. In this case, it won't, so we need to compensate. The Unicode characters are there either way, as you can test by copying from the tables and pasting into Wiktionary -- you get the same results no matter which table you use, just that you need to do that with your table to know what the characters are, and don't need to for the old table. — kwami (talk) 02:15, 26 January 2023 (UTC)

Please don't make articles purposefully illegible. If you want to make the Unicode article useless, fine -- no-one will use it anyway. But please don't mess with the main article. Your edit provides nothing, only detracts. — kwami (talk) 23:46, 25 January 2023 (UTC)

Why is it better to have images for a fourth time instead of the characters themselves? There's nothing "messed up" with actually including the characters in the article on the characters. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 00:20, 26 January 2023 (UTC)
But that's not what we're talking about, is it? There's no "instead" here. The characters were already in the table. You're not including anything, only excluding something -- visibility. To turn your question around, why is it better to make the table illegible, important enough to edit-war over? AFAICT there is no font available that will make these characters visible to the reader. A general guideline on WP is that we shouldn't include useless material, or make useful material useless. If the reader can't see it, it's useless.
As for why we have them a fourth time, easy: we're showing which characters are at which codes. If the reader can't see the characters, the table is useless, so why have it at all?
Just a reminder, you're now at 3RR. If you continue I will report you to ANI. You've given no reason for deleting this info (the Unicode values of the characters) from the article. — kwami (talk) 01:51, 26 January 2023 (UTC)
I didn't remove the graphics the last time, you just removed the characters. How is that better? ―Justin (koavf)TCM 10:56, 26 January 2023 (UTC)

Just to clarify: you replaced the actual characters (Unicode code points that display as characters) with the Unicode values (Unicode code points that display as boxes containing the code points). So with your edit, we say that at code point U+1D2C0 we have character U+1D2C0. What's the point of that? Better to show which character occurs at the code point.

With your latest revert, you created two tables, one legible and one illegible, while implying that the legible table does not include the Unicode characters even though it does. Again, what's the point, and why mislead the reader?

I have supplied a font to phabricator. Hopefully they'll add it to Wikimedia before too long. When they do -- or when we support fonts that are available to readerrs -- we can of course display just the code points and let the browser handle it. — kwami (talk) 01:58, 26 January 2023 (UTC)

Nowhere in the article Kaktovik numerals do they have those numerals. Ctrl+f <𝋁> and you get no responses. How is that a good thing? How is it better to have SVG graphics of these characters four times in the article and on the section about the digital characters themselves never actually have the characters in the article? Also, why do you think it's better to contradict MOS:TABLECAPTION and make the article less accessible? ―Justin (koavf)TCM 10:55, 26 January 2023 (UTC)

FWIW

FWIW, over at WP:Albums, I mean no disrespect whatsoever. We may disagree, but that's ok. While I'm personally bothered by how we categorize albums, at the end of the day I want what's best for other editors and Wikipedia's readers. I'm trying to understand why you prefer the current system, so thanks for replying to my follow-up questions. I promise I'm going to step away and let others chime in, I just wanted some initial clarification.

Thanks and happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 20:52, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

I have never gotten that impression and if I have done anything to imply that to you, please accept my apologies. I respect your contributions and perspective, even if we disagree. I in no way have any problem with you. Thanks kindly for reaching out. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 21:00, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

Categorisation and edit summaries

Hi Koavf, thanks for correcting the mistake I made in the category for this album cover. I'd been doing a lot of them, and clearly got the syntax wrong on this one!

In future though, please add a more meaningful edit summary than just "why?". If people have notifications enabled, this looks the same as someone covering up vandalism edits.

Cheers --RubenSchade (talk) 00:28, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

Oh, I guess I hadn't thought of that. Thanks. Had I been more articulate and helpful, I would have written something like "Hey, maybe see if you had similar edits like this nine years ago, just in case you made this error multiple times", but I didn't, so thanks for helping me instead. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 01:32, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

Do you have imminent plans to make an article for one of the other albums listed at that disambiguation page, or do you know of another editor who does? If not, I don't see the point of moving the Hey Monday album if it's the only one with an article. QuietHere (talk) 04:06, 10 February 2023 (UTC)

Natalie Merchant: Save Your Courage

Hi, I was just wondering why you reverted my edit. Thanks so much! Partyclams (talk) 03:11, 21 February 2023 (UTC)

Sorry if my edit summary wasn't clear, but per WP:ALBUMSTYLE, there are multiple valid ways of presenting a track listing. Why would you change an existing style? ―Justin (koavf)TCM 03:13, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
Sorry, I’m just used to seeing it the other way. I did it with the Des’ree album because Spotify actually has the full credits. There are different writers and producers listed for each track. Wasn’t sure how else to list them without some sort of template there. I appreciate your work on here, btw. Thank you for taking the time to comment back. Partyclams (talk) 03:26, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
Of course and I appreciate your time. Is Spotify a reliable source? I'm not familiar with them. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 03:28, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
Yes. It’s used by the record labels like Apple Music. It’s one of the biggest music streamers. Des’ree actually did release the liner notes on her web site. It’s a digital booklet: [1] Partyclams (talk) 03:35, 21 February 2023 (UTC)

Because of WP:REDNO, we can't have red link categories on any pages so we can't delete the categories until they are empty. I haven't removed the speedy deletion CSD C1 tags from the categories because I thought they might still be emptied by their deletion date. But if they are not emptied by tomorrow, I'll remove the tag and they can be retagged when they do become empty. Thanks for all of your work! Liz Read! Talk! 01:28, 22 February 2023 (UTC)

@Liz: They are all empty: find a page that is actually in one of the categories. This is just a matter of the database updating itself. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 01:53, 22 February 2023 (UTC)

Ref names

Use of "" are preferred, but optional, and not necessary if the characters are strung together. Why do we need the quotes when it only adds extra content in formatting? Semper Fi! FieldMarine (talk) 12:43, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

It's best practice and someone may well add a reference that requires them. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 13:03, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
That does not answer the question. How is it a best practice if it adds unnecessary characters? It seems to me following practices that do not add value to the project is actually not a best practice. If they are required in the case of a non-strung set of characters, then it is necessary, but that’s not the case here. Semper Fi! FieldMarine (talk) 13:38, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

Where's a good venue to find editors to clean up mangled citations?

I reverted a bunch of the most recent changes by user:Philoserf but this contribution list has a large number of these "Expanding bare references" edits, and I don’t really have the bandwidth to carefully look through every one. What's the best page for organizing some community effort to look carefully through these? My initial guess is that hundreds of them need to be reverted or fixed, but that might be an underestimate. –jacobolus (t) 20:42, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

Oh wow. :/ Probably just WP:AN in general. That will get eyes on it and allow someone to have some judicious oversight re: these silly edits. I sincerely hate these semi-automated tools for expanding references, as they create almost as many problems as they solve. Let me know how I can help, J. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 21:50, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
I am also pretty annoyed in general by bots and semi-automated script edits. The script being used here a bit too cavalierly made a mess of a significant proportion of the citations it converted for IMO mostly marginal benefits when it works properly. References can be improved by conversion to templates, but it inevitably requires a nontrivial amount of human effort to check the links, fix the metadata, etc.
I don’t think any harm was meant and I’m not trying to give Philoserf a hard time, shame them, get them in trouble, or whatever. But I do feel a bit overwhelmed by the number of edits that need to be manually double-checked here. Are administrators per se the folks to ask? Does anyone have good tools for splitting up work like this so each person only needs to check a few dozen pages? –jacobolus (t) 22:02, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
I don't think harm was meant either, but he's either 1.) serious about being retired, so getting in trouble is irrelevant or 2.) throwing a petulant temper tantrum instead of being collaborative, in which case, being in trouble is appropriate. I take a lot of time and effort to make sure that all claims I add are sourced and that the sources are fully documented and well-formed. It's not too much to ask that others at least don't make the sourcing more inaccurate and wrong here if they won't take the time to do it correctly. I think that admins are perfectly appropriate for handling this and unfortunately, since the state of metadata on the Web is very shoddy, there are no reliable scripts/bots/semi-automated tools that can do this work without human intervention. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 22:49, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

Hello, regarding this edit, please explain exactly how "universal acclaim" is sourced. The only source that supports a summary statement is the BBC article, which summarizes the reception as "generally favourable", which I paraphrased as "generally positive". The Metacritic article does nothing more than list critical reviews; it does not assign an aggregate score or make its own summary statement. Attempting to support a summary statement with the Metacritic article would constitute WP:SYNTHesis of the critic reviews. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 15:29, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

@Throast: Thanks. I think the language here now is acceptable. What do you think? ―Justin (koavf)TCM 15:36, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
I have to say, I can't agree completely. "Widespread acclaim" is phrasing that can only be a result of synthesizing the critic reviews the Metacritic article lists. I would remove that part specifically and keep the rest. You don't have to attribute the BBC claim because BBC is reliable. The Metacritic info reads too OR-y, imo. This is my proposal: Upon airing, the episode received generally favorable reviews.[BBC] A round-up of critical reviews by Metacritic assessed 25 reviews as "extremely positive", 19 as "positive", and four as "mixed/so-so".[Metacritic] Throast {{ping}} me! Unwelcomed trolling hidden

Hi. I have reverted an edit of yours on this article, and would like to remind you about WP:BRD. When your Bold edit has been Reverted by another editor, the recommended next step, if you continue to think the edit is necessary, is to Discuss the dispute on the article talk page with other editors, but not to re-revert it, which is the first step to edit warring, a disruptive activity which is not allowed. Discussion on the talk page is the only way we have of reaching consensus, which is central to resolving editing disputes in an amicable and collegial manner, which is why communicating your concerns to your fellow editors is essential. While the discussion is going on, the article generally should remain in the status quo ante until the consensus as to what to do is reached (see WP:STATUSQUO).

Please remember that as the person attempting to make a change to the article, the WP:ONUS is on you to justify the change, and to get a consensus if it is disputed; and again, please do not edit war. Beyond My Ken (talk) 01:32, 27 April 2023 (UTC)

Question About Box Set Noteworthiness

I thought you perhaps could help me with something. The band Ace of Base just came out with a 26 disc singles box set this week. The singles have brand new remixes (done just for the set on each individual disc) added to them. There are also a few unreleased singles included in it. Would this box set be noteworthy enough to have its own page? I’ve seen that other box sets have pages listing each disc’s tracklist. TIA! Partyclams (talk) 00:21, 30 April 2023 (UTC)

Notability is all about sources. So if you find multiple sources (preferably over time) discussing it at length, then yes. If not, then no. Typically, if you can at least find a single review from an acceptable source or prove that it charted, that's the bare minimum. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 01:14, 30 April 2023 (UTC)

Replacing rubbish with fake is not an improvement

Is there any reason why you think posting either version of One More Mountain was an acceptable use of the mainspace? The first one was an abandoned (sorry, "in use" while you were busy writing other articles) piece of junk, the newer version is just a copy of another album, Tonight!, and is not about One More Mountain at all. Could you at least try to wait to hit "save" until you have some semblance of an acceptable article, or else use sandboxes or drafts? "In use" is very nice to indicate that you are still expanding the article, it isn't an excuse to post anything you want. Fram (talk) 09:27, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
