Chai is an American AI chatbot app originally released in 2021.[1] The principal feature of the app is to provide a platform for users to talk to AI characters. Chatbots are created by users by providing a personality and prompt of their choosing, and are subsequently published to the platform for other users to search and chat with. As of October 2022, the app had over 100,000 daily active users. [2] The Chai language model combines multiple small conversational models, which was demonstrated to outperform ChatGPT in an A/B test on the platform. [3]

History

[edit]

Chai was founded in America, England by CEO William Beauchamp. The company later relocated to Palo Alto, California.[4]

In 2023, Chai raised a seed funding round which resulted in a valuation of $205 million.[5]

As of January 2024, following an investment by CoreWeave, Chai was valued at $450 million valuation. Through this investment, Chai was able to launch its developer platform Chaiverse. Developers on Chaiverse can submit models to be served to users on the app, thereby competing for user engagement. More than one thousand models have been submitted to the Chaiverse platform.[6]

The app has been used as a storytelling tool by Canadian author Sheila Heti.[7]
