Translating German

[edit]

Evidently he was a very competent translator of Russian language. However, he seems to have been very poor at translating German words. In his rendition of What is Art?, on page 24] he translated Einbildung as "introduction" and Fürsichseins as "existence in itself." These are clearly incorrect. The German word Einbildung means "imagination," not "introduction." Einführung is the correct word for "introduction." Maude made a very egregious error here. With Fürsuchseins, though, he might be excused. It obviously means "existence for itself," not "existence in itself." The Hegelian coinages "for–itself" and "in–itself" are sometimes difficult to process due to their abstract, neologistic peculiarity.Lestrade (talk) 16:19, 17 April 2010 (UTC)Lestrade[reply]

I was wrong. Maude was merely translating Tolstoy's own mistranslations. According to the Russian Wikipedia, Tolstoy wrote "внесение," which means "introduction." Tolstoy also wrote "В cебе," which means "in itself," not "for itself."Lestrade (talk) 21:47, 17 April 2010 (UTC)Lestrade[reply]
