I am having difficulty adding a picture of the book cover to this article any help would be appreciated. --Jason8430 01:10, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
I believe ASTROLOGY referenced in the second paragraph should be ASTRONOMY. I have not read the book and do not want to edit but the context seems wrong. Kentha 11:03, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Critical assessment
[edit]Gavin Schmidt, a climate scientist at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, described Ruddiman's ideas as intriguing, but the conclusions largely depended on a comparison of methane changes in the current warm period with those in the Vostok ice core which correlated with orbital changes, and more recent research indicated that these might not be applicable to present changes. The newer EPICA core showed only a small increase in methane during the last 5,000 years, which was generally attributed to the development of the boreal wetlands and major river deltas after the ice from the previous ice age melted and caused the sea level to rise to its current location. It was very uncertain that the relatively small human populations and cultivated areas could have made a significant difference, more research was needed to quantify relevant factors.[1]
!--preview of relevant page available in google, but Ruddiman does discuss burning forests…..Other criticism suggests that Ruddiman shortchanged the impact of burning forests in his synopsis of early human activity. According to Michael Williams author of Deforesting the Earth, early humans used fire a great deal for either hunting and or clearing purposes. Ruddiman does not discuss the role of fire at any length and instead decides to focus on the impact of the plow on human agriculture.[2]--!
I doubt that a text from 2004 can criticize a text from 2005. --78.54.54.5 (talk) 17:51, 30 August 2016 (UTC)
- The ideas in the book are the same as Ruddiman had put forth earlier. So the 2004 date isn't a problem; its a criticism of the ideas, not the book William M. Connolley (talk) 18:23, 30 August 2016 (UTC)
