WP:Fair Use
[edit]Does this template have some kind of exemption from WP:FAIR? If there is no rationale for including fair use images in a template then they should be removed. Ian3055 21:12, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
- No, no exemption. Yes, they should be removed. Angr (t • c) 07:20, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
Naming
[edit]Who decided which supermarkets were "value" and "The Big four"? Is there any evidence, or is this a POV attack? Lofty 09:22, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
- I agree up to a point, I'd say "value" and "convenience" are difficult to justify, value particularly but with the movement, particularly of Tesco and Sainsbury's into convienience that becomes harder to define too. I'd say that "The Big Four" is pretty well established, but in the end it doesnt really add much, so here is a go at a new version. Ian3055 20:45, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
Home Bargains
[edit]Is Home Bargains a supermarket? I don't think it should be down as one; it is more of discount chain. Enton 10:55, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
- Since removed. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 12:38, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- I added it back, but this time under discount: judging by its website, it is more of a kind with Aldi and Lidl. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 05:59, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
- If Quality Save, 99p Stores, Poundland or B & M are, then Home Bargains definitely is! I really think it should be reinstated on those grounds... If noone objects in the next few days I'll add it back -- 132.185.240.120 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 21:04, 19 September 2011 (UTC).
Regional chains and convenience stores
[edit]Doesn't Booths have enough prominence in the UK market to warrant inclusion in this template? 77.96.169.248 (talk) 11:50, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- See Booths. Only locally important - Lancashire, to be exact. Samsara (talk • contribs) 13:38, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
All of the 'convinience' stores are pretty minor, perhaps with the exception of 'SPAR' and 'Londis'. Where is the justification for including companies like 'Scotmid', 'Budgens' and 'Nisa Today' which most people have never heard of, and tend to be very regional in operation? 84.69.221.186 (talk) 16:12, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
- The title of UK supermarkets does not exclude regional chains. Scotmid and Budgens are much bigger than Booths, but equally regional. Lets decide whether or not to include regional chains. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 12:24, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- I advocate removing Scotmid, as it is covered by The Co-operative brand under major chains. Add Booths.
- The big convenience store chains are hugely significant. Nisa-Today's turns over 7 billion pounds and is twice the size of SPAR, by number of stores(though that includes Costcutter.) The topic is all the more significant as majors like Tesco are aggressively following the co-operatives into the convenience store market. I can't tell the difference between a convenience store and a supermartket, though some in the industry make the distinction. We should keep them.
- I propose a rule of thumb: if a supermarket is notable enough to have a Wikipedia article, it is notable enough to be in this template.
- --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 12:38, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- I have gone ahead to implement my suggestions, to see if the changes prompt discussions. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 22:28, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
- I added scotmid back into regional as it is an independant co op and covers a larger regional area than its original lothian base Brydo16 (talk) 18:41, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
- I like your logic, but I wonder if we should add the other 20-odd independent regional co-ops, or at least the eight that have their own articles. My instinct is that it won't be helpful to readers, and we should remove Scotmid too (it gets a link in the lead of The Co-operative Food): but perhaps I am biased, because I made their own nav box: {{UK consumer co-ops}}. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 15:16, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
Since Brydo16 has not convinced me that Scotmid is any different from the other large regional consumer co-ops, I have removed it from the template. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 00:38, 28 November 2008 (UTC)
Defunct group
[edit]There have been numerous mergers, name changes and liquidations in the UK grocery trade. Having contributed a couple of defunct supermarket articles, I suggest we keep them to categories, and avoid overwhelming the main supermarkets navigation box. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 14:13, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
- I moved the defunct supermarkets to a new navigation box: {{Defunct UK grocers}}. Hope that helps. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 06:18, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
FreshXpress
[edit]with 9 stores is FreshXpress notable enough to be included on this template?
