The Grotto is a 1962 Australian play by Robert Wales. It was runner up in a 1962 Journalist Club competition and had a run at the Independent Theatre.[1]
The play was the first Australia play performed at the Independent since Hunger of a Girl in 1960.[2]
Premise
[edit]The story of an Italian migrant family living in Woolloomooloo.
Reception
[edit]The Australian Jewish Times wrote "It has many interesting and exciting thoughts, but only the author would know why he chooses to express them against the background of the lives of an Italian fishing family in Woolloomooloo."[3]
The Bulletin called it "a pretty bad play".[4]
The Sydney Morning Herald praised it as "a genuine work of art... gripping sharply etched masterpiece".[5]
Adaptation
[edit]It was adapted for radio by Joy Hollyer in 1963.[6]
