Cliff Jones FREng FInstP FRSC FRSA CPhys is a British physicist, chemist and entrepreneur.[1] He is a Professor at the University of Leeds, England and specialises in liquid crystals.[2][3] Jones holds over 60 patents in practical applications of liquid crystal technology, including liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and switchable liquid crystal contact lenses.[4]

Early career and education

[edit]

Jones' early career started as a a research scientist in 1885 with the General Electric Company (GEC).[5] Jones was stationed at the Hirst Research Centre and seconded to the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment (RSRE). Both the GEC and the RSRE were interested in wall mounted display technology.[5] While committed to these companies, Jones started working towards a PhD (Chemistry) from the University of Hull. The PhD was a study of Smectic C and ferroelectric liquid crystals, under George William Gray CBE FRS.[6]

In 1991, Jones was awarded his PhD and went on to work full-time with the RSRE.[6] During the same year, the RSRE joined other defence companies to form the Defence Research Agency (DRA).[7]

Research and career

[edit]

At the DRA, Jones was promoted to Principal Scientific Officer in 1994.[6] He managed a nearly 4-year international project on evaluating the feasibility of using liquid crystals in flat panel displays between Sharp, Japan, and UK-based defence research establishments.[6] Jones became a part of another merger when the DRA joined with other defence research establishments to form the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA) in 1995.[8] Jones stayed with the DERA as Technical Leader, Chair of their Liquid Crystal Consortium, and DERA Fellow until 2000.[5]

In 2000, Jones went on to found DisplayData (at the time known as ZBD Displays).[5] DisplayData is a company that specialises in liquid crystal displays (LCDs) for commercial use.[9][10] At DisplayData, Jones worked for over a decade as the company's Chief Technology Officer (CTO).[11][12] He developed LCDs that only require power when changing image, called bistable liquid crystal displays.[13] This invention earned Jones the Science and Technology Award at the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year competition in 2005.[14] Jones was awarded the Cyril Hilsum Medal in 2007 by the British Liquid Crystal Society (BLCS) for all of his research into liquid crystals leading up to that point.[15]

After leaving DisplayData, Jones became a Professor of Physics at the University of Manchester in 2013. In 2015, Jones moved into the Soft Matter Group at the University of Leeds under the same role as Professor of Physics.[16][11] On arrival, Jones, along with Helen Gleeson and Mamatha Nagaraj, set up the Liquid Crystal Group within the Soft Matter Group, where Jones continues his research.[17] In the same year, Jones was awarded the Gray Medal (named after George William Gray CBE FRS), the British Liquid Crystal Society's (BLCS) highest award for research in liquid crystals.[18] At the award ceremony, it was noted that Jones is the first recipient of all four BLCS awards.[19][20][21]
