Issues/Second Style
[edit]note: a map would look spiffy on the right hand side of the page, but I think it would be good if someone made some new maps.
Manawatu-Wanganui Region/Before the Fact
[edit]Elections will be held to elect mayors and councils in Wanganui, Ruapehu, rangitikei, Manawatu, Tararua and Horowhenua districs, as well as in Palmerston North City. The Manawatu-Wanganui Region will be elected at the same time.
Some interesting contests are in Wanganui where colourful local Mayor Michael Laws is retiring after just one term, and in Palmerston North, where local personality Alan "Groatie" Parsons is mounting a strong campaign to unseat sitting mayor Lionel Blair. We aren't trying to be a results service; that produces a result that nobody can really relate to, full of numbers with no context.
Wellington Region/After the Fact
[edit]Transport proved a contentious issue for electors in the Wellington Region, with the mayors of Dudecargill and Rockstargo losing their bid for re-election. Also in trouble was the mayor of Squaresville, Dr. Rickenbacker Hypotenuse, whose authoritarian style and alleged unwillingness to deal with escalting council debt saw the election of Jed Bartlet. Hypotenuse is the first mayor of Squaresville to lose a bid for re-election since 1962.
2007 Election Results
- Mayor of Porirua - Jenny Brash, since 2001, re-elected
- Mayor of Upper Hutt - Wayne Guppy, since 2001, re-elected
- Mayor of Hutt City - Norton Verdenzendergroggen, since 2004, defeated by Matt Santos
High public opposition to the new inner city bypass lead to five of the ten Regional councillours being defeated in their bids for re-election, including former Mayor Fran Wilde and constant presence Chris Laidlaw. The new council will be lead by mc chris. I guess the point here is to say that the Regional Council's membership and structure leads me to think it isn't so important that we need to much beyond summarise what happened.
Here is where we put some cute notes; former All Black Biff Socko won a seat on the Upper Hutt City Council, while the voters of Carterton district elected an old shoe to be Emperor for Life. By this I mean, results in descending order of importance: what happened to the mayors, status of the regional councils and finally, whether or not a personality from days of yore got their wish for a place on a community board.
Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough Districts
[edit]These districts are imaginary. There is no such place as Nelson. But, let's say that there were elections there. The winners were
- the Mayor of Nelson - Fred Dagg, since 2001, re-elected
- the Mayor of Marlborough District - Ricky Ponting, since 1903, re-elected
- the Mayor of Tasman District - Clyde S. Wallop, since 1992
