Denizen's Den (Denizen's Den) is a tile-based roguelike video game for xBox360 and Windows XP+. It was developed and published by Flattened Pixel in 2012.[1]

Release history

[edit]

This game is the first follows the story of an adventurer who finds himself chasing down various creatures in order to rid his world of their evil. This software is commercially sold. However, it has a demo version available on their website and on the xBox360.

Gameplay

[edit]

The game was written to follow some of the classic features of rogue-style games. It is based solely on keyboard or xBox360 controls. So, all input is quickly referenced to keyboard or controller shortcuts. If a player dies, the game is over. So, one must be careful with the items that they find. Another unique part if this game is that all items are randomly named until they are identified. So, you never know what a potion or scroll is until you use it once. After one use, you will not have to identify that item again.

Magic

[edit]

The game favors hand-to-hand combat, But, there are a number of spells as well. Spells come in the form of wands and scrolls. They can do damage, provide helpful information about the level, or teleport you to other locations.

Items

[edit]

Denizen's Den possesses an inventory system that limits a player's load based on quantity of items. There are 6 slots for each type of item. Scrolls and potions may be stacked. However, if you want to pick up another scroll or potion, and your slots are full, you will have to completely empty a slot in order to fit the new item. Items in the game can be normal, cursed, or enchanted. Although items do not break with use, they may already be rusted when found. Monsters can also damage items.

Time

[edit]

The game tracks how much time has been spent playing the game. If too much time is spent on a single level, a demon comes out and kills them, unless they hastily make it to the next level.

Plot

[edit]

The story starts with our hero's house being robbed. He goes on a search to find the culprit and finds himself battling a number of creatures along the way. As he proceeds, he finds scrolls that tell of one who has gone before him. Ultimately, the hero learns of an Orb that has great power. He finds himself in a battle that will eventually place the Orb in his grasp.

Graphics

[edit]

All objects in this world, including the walls and terrain, are image tiles that are scaled and rotated as necessary to fit the resolution and relative position on the screen. Animations are a done as a series of tiled images. However, it is fast enough to give a smooth appearance to the effects.

Maps are randomly generated. However, there are some static maps in static levels. There are also some static maps that are randomly loaded.
