Prominence Parent
Hi Buaidh, I am still concerned about the number of editors who are still making edits based on claims like "Ben Nevis cannot be Snowdon's parent" and "Everest cannot be K2's parent" on the grounds that they are too distant. Do you think we can better explain the concept of prominence parent? Viewfinder (talk) 06:42, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
- I am very visually oriented, so I need to think of topographic prominence in terms of a visual analogy. Imagine you are standing at the top of a peak and imagine that an imaginary sea level (based on an elevated geoid) rises to your feet. Now slowly lower the imaginary sea level and an imaginary island appears beneath your feet. Your island will grow and will merge with other islands that will emerge. Eventually, your island will touch an island with a higher peak than your island (i.e., an imaginary island that existed before you started lowering the imaginary sea level.) The summit of that island will be the parent peak of the summit of your island, and the elevation difference of your summit and the elevation at which the two islands touch is the topographic prominence of your summit. It makes no difference how close or far the two summits are from one another. Mount Everest is the parent peak of Aconcagua (17,755 km away), as well as the parent of the South Summit of Mount Everest (360 m away). Yours aye, Buaidh 18:28, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
Let's reduce the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement!
Hi Buaidh, please allow me to get in touch with you because you have stated sympathy with environmental causes on your user page. I would like to invite you to check out the Environmental impact project page on Meta, where I am trying to create some momentum to reduce the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement. My first goal is to have all the Wikimedia servers run on renewable energy. Maybe you could show your support for this project as well? Thank you, --Gnom (talk) 15:14, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

Hello, I'm ZLEA. I noticed that you recently removed some content from Wikipedia:Userboxes/Wikipedia/humour without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. You removed many UBX without giving an edit summary. ZLEA (Talk,Contribs) 01:50, 25 February 2017 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Template:Helpt
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Template:Helpt, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. An update from the Sustainability Initiative
Hi, Buaidh! Thank you again for supporting the Sustainability Initiative, which aims at reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement. Over the past two years, more than 200 Wikipedians from all over the world have come together to push the Wikimedia movement towards greater sustainability.
What's new?
We are writing you this message because there is great news: The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has finally passed a resolution stating that the Foundation is committed to seeking ways to reduce the impact of its activities on the environment. Also, we have created a cool logo and found a nice name for the project which you can see on the right :-)
What's next?
Currently, we are working with Wikimedia Foundation staff to make sustainability a key priority for the selection of a new location for Wikimedia servers in Singapore. Also, we have presented the Wikimedia Foundation with a green energy roadmap to have all Wikimedia servers run on renewable energy by 2019.
Please help!
Let's keep this project moving forward – and there are several ways in which you can help:
- Ask other Wikipedians to sign the project page as well – this way we can show the Wikimedia Foundation that this is an issue that the community really cares about.
- Talk to Wikimedians you know about the importance of reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement.
- Improve and translate the project page on Meta.
If you have any questions, you can contact us on on Meta. Again, thank you very much for your support! --Aubrey and Gnom (talk) 09:39, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

Hello. Per WP:REDNOT you shouldn't add red links to categories - either ditch the link or create the target category. Non-free image use
Hi Buaidh. JJMC89 recently had to revert you twice for inappropriately adding non-free images (here and here) to pages. Since you are doing lots of work (including adding images) on portals, etc., please be aware that non-free content may only be used in the article namespace per WP:NFCC#9. All you need to do is check the licensing of files before adding them to any portals, templates, etc. Anything licensed as non-free should not be added, and anything whose licensing appears questionable can be asked about at WP:MCQ. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:31, 27 September 2017 (UTC)

Userboxes
Hello Buaidh,
I see you have made significant contributions to userboxes, and I value the contributions you have made, and so I wanted to approach you with two requests:
- Please use Template:Userbox instead of hardcoding userbox code. Hardcoded userboxes are much harder to edit.
- Please do not add categories to categories that express general sentiments, and please do not add "Wikipedians by interest" categories to userboxes that merely express beliefs or preferences. Userboxes that state, "This user likes food" or "This user supports freedom", should not populate Category:Wikipedians interest in food or Category:Wikipedians interested in human rights. Most people like food and most people support freedom, but liking food and supporting freedom do not imply an interest in collaborating on articles related to food or freedom/human rights.
This type of categorization merely devalues user categories and makes them less useful to editors, such as myself, who use them to try to find other editors who are interested in collaborating on a specific topic (and not editors who just use a generic userbox).
I hope you will take my request in the collegial vein it is intended. Thank you, -- Black Falcon (talk) 17:34, 7 October 2017 (UTC)
- I almost always use Template:Userbox unless I am updating a userbox template created by someone else.
- The rise of racism, white nationalism, neofascism, anti-immigrant, and alt-right movements illustrates that clearly not everyone is interested in human rights. I think all the subcategories I have created are very relevant.
- I have tried to promote collaboration on Wikipedia for more than ten years. I host a Wiknic every year to talk things over. Unfortunately, I've seen few attempts to invite users to collaborate. Instead, I see the formation of little cliques that try to keep other users from participating.
- I'm not sure that avoiding controversy promotes collaboration.
- Thank you for your feedback, although your reverts are a pain. Yours aye, Buaidh 17:51, 7 October 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for your detailed response, and I'll address a few of your points. #1: My apologies, you do indeed and I missed that somehow. #2: I agree, but user categories related to "interest in human rights" should facilitate collaboration on articles and other content related to human rights, not promote human rights in general. #3: I am aware of how much you have contributed, so please don't think I am questioning that in any way. Your experience may be different, but I've used user categories on many occasions to find other users who can help with a particular topic or issue. My aim is not to prevent users from expressing their opinions (I am a strong proponent that users should be able to say most anything on their user pages) but rather to prevent the devaluation of user categories as a tool for collaboration. I'll leave it at this, and thank you again for your response. Cheers, -- Black Falcon (talk) 21:26, 7 October 2017 (UTC)
- I completely agree with your last point. However, the proliferation of user categories has gone far beyond merely the need for collaboration. I doubt that we can reign them back in. I'm a novice in Category:Wikipedians interested in politics, an area I tried to avoid until last year. I don't know if you if we can limit the subcategories to merely areas of collaboration. Users want to find like-minded users. Whether that supports or confounds collaboration is beyond me. Yours aye, Buaidh 00:31, 8 October 2017 (UTC)

English variants
Hello. I see you've been doing a lot of work on en-gb templates and the like. Has there been a change since this CfD deprecated national variants of English? Le Deluge (talk) 13:26, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
- I'm a novice in this area. My work has been primarily for Wikipedia:WikiProject Userboxes. Subsequent to the above discussion there was this discussion: Wikipedia:Templates_for_deletion/Log/2008_November_6#Template:User_en-gb-5. This was nine years ago and I'm unaware of any subsequent discussions on this matter. Yours aye, Buaidh 15:13, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Buaidh. I noticed you've been adding center text alignment to these templates as well. Note that these templates also form part of a series of templates under WP:Babel that allow users to identify foreign languages in which they are proficient. Before your change, all of the Babel templates, as I understand, had left text alignment, so by changing just the English series to center alignment, it makes it strikingly inconsistent when paired with other language templates, such as {{user de}}. On that basis, I've removed center alignment from the {{user en}} series. Mz7 (talk) 18:58, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
- That's fine with me. Yours aye, Buaidh 19:06, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
Blockquotes and other HTML tags
If you're going to use <blockquote> and other HTML tags, remember to close them - I had to close three that you left dangling on three separate MfDs that were warping the whole page. ♠PMC♠ (talk) 13:05, 11 October 2017 (UTC)
- I'm sorry and thank you for closing the blockquotes. Yours aye, Buaidh 15:52, 11 October 2017 (UTC)

Komi language templates
Hello, Buaidh. I oppose your last changes to those English language templates, which are probably the most common ones on Wikipedia. Language templates should be concise, and you adding the word ‘language’ everywhere hasn’t changed anything besides making them longer.
However, as a person who tries to observe WP:DGAF, I will not argue with you about this. Instead, I have a request: Can you please make some Komi language templates? They are mostly available on the Komi Wikipedia, but the English one only has two. Don’t forget adding the relevant categories, which are probably as important as the templates themselves. Thanks! ~ Itsused(Talk·Contribs) 16:57, 11 October 2017 (UTC)
- When I encounter the single word "English", my first thoughts are:
- The English people
- The English language
- England
- I try to clarify which of the above I'm referring to.
- I only create user boxes in the English language. We only have four users with a kv-1 comprehension. I will be happy to work with a user with a greater Komi language comprehension. Yours aye, Buaidh 17:16, 13 October 2017 (UTC)
- No problem, thanks for clarifying. I guess this distinction – although a bit unnecessary – is important to some people, and since English is not my native tongue I can’t really argue about this. Have a good day. ~ Itsused(Talk·Contribs) 13:55, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
Your change from "usbk" to "yy" broke the page from "The Matrix" onwards. I have not found a solution (exept a revret). I guess, hence you know the technical reason for the change, you may be in a better position to fix it. Thanks and greetings --Jahobr (talk) 22:49, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
- I'm sorry I left the page messed up. I've now split the page to create more room for expansion. Yours aye, Buaidh 00:33, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
- same thing here: Wikipedia:Userboxes/Wikipedia/Views. since you know what to do, i leave it to you to fix it. you might want to check any other pages you made these edits to as well. cheers, k kisses 17:49, 25 October 2017 (UTC)
- I'm sorry. The Wikipedia:Userboxes pages take some time to straighten out, and sometimes I get interrupted before I can finish. I'll try to avoid this. Yours aye, Buaidh 23:38, 25 October 2017 (UTC)
- Wikipedia:Userboxes/Media/Film and User:UBX/Userboxes/Religion are broken too. What is the advantage to change from "usbk" to "yy"? It does not seem to have benefits, but it breaks the pages. --Jahobr (talk) 11:53, 5 November 2017 (UTC)
- The edits to Wikipedia:Userboxes/Media/Film are finally complete. The Wikipedia:Userboxes pages continue to grow as new userboxes are added. Frequently these pages grow so long that it becomes quite difficult to locate userboxes. Template:Yytab allows tables to be broken into subtables on multiple pages. This should make it easier for users to locate the userboxes of their particular interest.
- The edits to User:UBX/Userboxes/Religion were completely premature. I have reverted all my edits to this page. Yours aye, Buaidh 22:52, 5 November 2017 (UTC)

Please stop making disruptive edits, as you did at Template:User en-5.
- If you are engaged in an article content dispute with another editor, discuss the matter with the editor at their talk page, or the article's talk page, and seek consensus with them. Alternatively you can read Wikipedia's dispute resolution page, and ask for independent help at one of the relevant notice boards.
- If you are engaged in any other form of dispute that is not covered on the dispute resolution page, seek assistance at Wikipedia's Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents.
If you continue to disrupt Wikipedia, you may be blocked from editing. Non-consensus edit. KMF (talk) 03:13, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
- There is no content dispute that I am aware of. I made an edit. User:Mz7 made further changes which I approved (please see #English variants above.) User:KATMAKROFAN went through and reverted most of our changes without any discussion or previous involvement. I don't mind the reversions, but I cannot find the disputing consensus that KATMAKROFAN claims.
- I believe KATMAKROFAN is just attempting to intimidate. I disagree with KATMAKROFAN and the Association of Deletionist Wikipedians, although I understand many of their concerns. I go to great lengths to avoid disrupting other users. Please let me know if I misunderstand the situation. Yours aye, Buaidh 04:12, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
You have a bunch of new subpages
As per Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Template:User US-RU and Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Template:User huge mistake, the following templates are now in your user space:
The following two I have left where they are for now, purely because someone relisted the MfDs.
Wikitext | userbox | where used | |
---|---|---|---|
{{Template:User MAGA before European colonization}}
|
|
linked pages | |
{{Template:User under surveillance}}
|
linked pages |
The next step is to repair all links on user pages, after which the redirects from template space can be deleted or tagged with {{db-g6}}. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 13:39, 18 October 2017 (UTC)
- I have fixed all the doc pages and deleted the template talk redirects, I am going to see if there is an automated solution to do the rest. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 14:21, 18 October 2017 (UTC)
- I was hoping that I could do this a bit more cleanly, but thank you for your efforts. Yours aye, Buaidh 15:58, 18 October 2017 (UTC)

- Buaidh, if I were you I would check your PC for malware. That does not look like something you could do yourself accidentally; it may be a malicious piece of e.g. Javascript that inserted what looks like a phone number into your edit, perhaps as a form of spam (if you were typing an e-mail then a randomly inserted phone number might be clicked on and dialled if read on a phone).--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 22:00, 15 December 2017 (UTC)
