A barnstar for you!

The Barnstar of Diligence
For your hard work cleaning up all the non-free GI Joe images! I started the task a while ago, and went to check up today and saw that it was basically done! This will make orphan image cleanup a lot faster. Calliopejen1 (talk) 18:57, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
Happy to help! Thank you for the barnstar! –Drilnoth (T/C) 21:03, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

Hello Again! I don't mean to be a grass, but I think you should take a look at User:The W Salon , his/her userpage does not follow the rules of WP:UP, and therefore maybe should be removed??? Just letting you know, and helping wikipedia. IceHockeyHero (talk) 15:15, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

It's ok, another admistartor spotted it after me and has deleted the page and blocked him/her, sorry to bother you! IceHockeyHero (talk) 15:25, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
Great! Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion is a policy which describes when and how to request that a page be immediately deleted. In the case of that page, a user tagged it with {{Db-g11}}, requesting that it be deleted for "Unambiguous advertising or promotion". –Drilnoth (T/C) 15:47, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

Hi Drilnoth, hope all is well. When you have time, could you get Template:Copy to Wikimedia Commons to categorize bot-assessed files to Category:Copy to Wikimedia Commons (bot-assessed)? I don't believe the code you added is working... All the best, FASTILY (TALK) 19:51, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

Harold Hitchcock Page 10/08/11

Hello, I am new to wikipedia but would like to make the necessary changes to the Harold Hitchcock page so that it can be fully functioning again. Please could you advise me what it is you would like changed so that I may rectify these points.

Kind Regards, Sophie PS Apologies if I have posted this in the wrong place. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sugarcookieuk (talkcontribs) 11:31, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

Basically, there are two significant issues with the page. The first is that it appears like the page has been being edited by someone close to Harold, which is a conflict of interest which needs to be addressed by an uninvolved editor. The second issue is that the page does not have sufficient footnoted references for the information contained in it. The page is "fully functioning", it just has a few issues (as do, unfortunately, most all Wikipedia articles). –Drilnoth (T/C) 13:10, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

Okay; the file description page hadn't linked to the original image, so there was no way to check OTRS permission and the like. I've updated the description and removed the deletion tag. Thanks! –Drilnoth (T/C) 22:35, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

Hey, don't mention it; I do what I can! I wish I had a few more of the instruments to photograph (or play with) but those are the only RB ones I have unfortunately (the rest of my kit is 2 GH:WT guitars (which I have already photographed) and a GH:WT drum kit (which I haven't)). Knocked out!

There are less than a dozen items, all waiting for deletion processes to close. The category is essentially dead.

(In figure) A: Category:Wikipedia license migration needs review, weighing in at several thousand items. B: Backlog clearers, weighing in at a small handful of users. Figure depicts Drilnoth and Sven Manguard (B) beating Category:Wikipedia license migration needs review (A) to death.

Gen Con pictures

Hey man, looking for your help!  :) A friend of mine has been taking pictures at Gen Con for a few years now, and I talked him into thinking about letting me use some of them for Wikipedia. I can upload them for him, but I want to make sure he gets proper attribution, of course (Carlos A. Smith). Here are some examples: Bruce Cordell, Keith Baker, Chris Pramas, Erik Mona. They would need some cropping of course. BOZ (talk) 04:13, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Also, I don't necessarily want to use any of those pictures just yet, at he also has a big gallery of pictures from the Ennies awards show which I have yet to go through, so there may be some betters ones there of any or all of these folks. :) BOZ (talk) 12:05, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
The best way to license the images is to have your friend change the licensing of the images on Flickr to a Creative Commons license (either Attribution or Attribution-ShareAlike) and then use [1] or [2], or upload the image yourself and add Commons:Template:Flickrreview to the image along with the licensing tag. Attribution could probably be "Carlos A. Smith". –Drilnoth (T/C) 12:45, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
Since cropping will be involved in just about every case, I would rather do that and then upload them manually. I'm sure I will mangle the licensing badly. My first attempt is File:MonteCook2007Ennies.JPG; please see if you can fix that up decently, and I will know what I need to do to make the others right. Thanks!  :) BOZ (talk) 16:02, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
Unfortunately, I can't fix it up because we still don't have evidence of permission. I would, if I could, but the licensing on Flickr needs to be changed. I'm sure that your friend has agreed to license them, but unfortunately we need more evidence. –Drilnoth (T/C) 13:36, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
OK, permission fixed. :) When I choose the rest of the images I want to use, I'll let him know and he will fix those as well. BOZ (talk) 15:30, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
Great! Looks good. I've moved the image to Commons and cleaned up the licensing tags and such. Images like these should be uploaded to Commons because they have a proper review system for Flickr files, but note that unless you're an admin or "trusted user" at Commons you can only add the "FlickrReview" template without parameters, and then a trusted user will come along at some point and verify the licensing. –Drilnoth (T/C) 16:25, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks!  :) But why am I having a hard time adding it to the article properly?  :( BOZ (talk) 16:36, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

Morning everyone, the pictures (Gen Con/Ennie Awards) in question are for public domain use, as long the 'credit' of their ownership is acknowledged. Besides that, I hope that will help the articles greatly being written for Gen Con.

UPDATE:The licenseing for ablums can be done global or per individiual shot if wanted. Per Boz's direct request on what areas he wanted to use. They were made global. Take care. Truth Seeker the III/Carlos A Smith. Let the Truth stands Naked. 15:38, 23 August 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Truth Seeker the III (talkcontribs)

Thanks!  :) BOZ (talk) 16:02, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
We still don't have evidence of permission. The on-flickr licensing either needs to be changed or an email has to be sent to WP:OTRS with evidence per Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. –Drilnoth (T/C) 22:24, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
Should he do that for each pitcure individually, or can it be done globally per gallery? BOZ (talk) 14:07, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
I think it would have to be done for each image separately. :( Alternatively, if the scope of the licensing is clearly defined in an email sent to OTRS, the licensing on-flickr may not need to be changed. –Drilnoth (T/C) 14:10, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
Would that e-mail go to "permissions-commons@wikimedia.org" per the instructions under Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials#Granting us permission to copy material already online or am I looking in the wrong place? BOZ (talk) 15:09, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
That would be the place! The email would just have to clearly spell out which images or group of images are being licensed and link to the license text itself. –Drilnoth (T/C) 16:25, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

If you could help me fix the broken image on Monte Cook, I also uploaded the following images just now: File:BruceCordellGenCon2004.JPG talk - File:ChrisPramasGenCon2007.JPG talk - File:DougKovacsGenCon2011.jpg talk - File:ErikMona2011Ennies.JPG talk - File:JamesWyattGenCon2007.JPG talk - File:JasonBulmahn2010Ennies.JPG talk - File:LisaStevens2009Ennies.JPG talk - File:SueCook2007Ennies.JPG talk - BOZ (talk) 22:55, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

Great! I'm glad to hear that files can be relicensed on a whole-album basis. BOZ, please upload these to Commons rather than here. Commons has an official Flickr review system so that even if the creator changes the licensing again or if the image gets deleted, we still have evidence of permission, and then the images are accessible to all Wikimedia wikis. Transferring images already uploaded takes longer than uploading images in the first place, so it should be easier for everyone if they don't need to be transferred manually.
Thank you both for helping find these great images and getting them properly licensed! –Drilnoth (T/C) 13:53, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
No problem, and thank you!  :) Any idea what I did wrong on fixing the image to Monte Cook? BOZ (talk) 13:57, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
Infoboxes are weird with images. Some of them just need the image name, some of them just need the image name prefixed by "File:", and some need the full bracketed image code. This one just needed the name of the image. I've fixed it for you. –Drilnoth (T/C) 13:59, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks again! He also has some galleries from the NY Comic-con which I will go through at some point, and I have a much better idea on what to do next time. :) BOZ (talk) 14:03, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Hello Drilnoth, I have prepared an drive yesterday to get the most images moved to the Wikimedia Commons. It is at Wikipedia:WikiProject Images and Media/Commons/Drive Sep 2011. It will start at 13 years ago or more precisely at 00:00, 1 September 2011 (UTC). There are some awards you may get. You may sign up now. We need lots of sysops too to delete the moved images. ~~Ebe123~~ talkContribs 17:27, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I do, because the images aren't originally from Wikipedia (they're from BioLib.cz). See Commons:License review. As a "license reviewer" on Wikimedia Commons, I can review these images so that if the original source's licensing ever changes or is deleted, we have evidence of its original licensing. –Drilnoth (T/C) 17:12, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

File permissions

Hi, I saw your notifications for files: File:Namco Pony Super.jpg and File:Lefas 2005.jpg

On the file pages I make references to the names of the persons that have provided me with the files and their rights (I am an author of relevant books), something that I thought would be a valid clarification (since anybody could contact these persons and verify it, and it clearly states my responsibilty). It is impossible to ask, say, an aged businessman that provided me material years ago, to send e-mails etc. I obviously resepect Wiki processes that protect copyright, and this is the reason that I state the above arguments. Skartsis (talk) 09:30, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but that is not sufficient evidence of permission for Wikipedia (although I, personally, don't doubt your claim). There is a how-to guide about providing proper evidence of permission at Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission... see specifically the section "Once permission is confirmed". If an image was created by someone other than the uploader (even if the creator was a friend of the uploader), or if the image was first published somewhere other than Wikipedia without licensing information compatible with Wikipedia, we must have an email confirming permission. To the best of my knowledge, that is the only way to confirm permission. –Drilnoth (T/C) 14:11, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for helping out with the articles related to him and his albums! Let me know if you have any questions or need any help. –Drilnoth (T/C) 14:25, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Hello, in fact I have: I am french and on the french wikipedia (who is mainly similar to the english version) we can't put an "official" image like a cover (I don't know exactly why, it must be the french laws). I'm not enough good in english for understand the instructions in this language so I don't know how to put the cover of Pools of Sorrow, Waves of Joy and Strange Hobby (and the nexts I possibly make). So if you can do it, or explain to me how to do, it will be great. Tranks ! --Hyliad (d) 17:21, 1 september 2011 (UTC)
Ah, sure. I'll try to upload copies of those covers later today or tomorrow. Now if only I could find some copies of those actual CDs (I listened to them on Grooveshark and want to buy them, but I can't even find MP3s available legally for sale :(  ). –Drilnoth (T/C) 15:33, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

It looks pretty much good overall, although it would probably be a good idea to use {{Cite web}} for the references, providing as much information as possible.
The problem, I think, with those review sections is that the sources aren't considered reliable. Now, in my personal opinion, reviews (even those from professional sources) are going to be biased by the individual writer, so most reviews from music sites, even those not considered "reliable", should be allowed, but that isn't Wikipedia policy. It should be fine to leave the reviews in as-is though, they just wouldn't be acceptable when trying to make the articles into Good or Featured articles. :/ –Drilnoth (T/C) 13:24, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Reviewing for the Commons Transfer Drive

...while I admire your enthusiasm, you only need to review 1 in 10 transfers, not every single transfer, for most users. The only time you have to review every transfer someone makes is if they're making a large number of mistakes (like you see with Varnent at the bottom).

This will save you some time and sanity. Cheers, and welcome aboard. Sven Manguard Wha? 09:25, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Actually, I'm marking so many as reviewed because that helps me remember which ones I've deleted and finished the license review on Commons (since those images are PD, but originally published somewhere other than a Wikimedia project). I know that not every transfer needs to be reviewed; I'm just marking them so I don't go looking at the same images multiple times. –Drilnoth (T/C) 19:01, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Not that I want to make this a QpQ, but rather than (currently) needing a review, if you can do a serious attempt at a copyedit of Dragon Warrior, that would be much more appreciated. Also, 15 minutes for a good review is much to short of a time. You'd need at least 1/2 hour, likely more to have a seriously competent review. Thanks for you help with the September 2011 Move To Commons drive!

The September 2011 Move To Commons drive was a tremendous success! We blew away our main goal, and our secondary goal was 97% complete by the end. Thanks for doing your part! For transferring 84 files you earned the Tireless Contributor Barnstar, for being #7 on the leaderboard you earned the Transfer to Commons Drive Leaderboard Barnstar, for deleting (well) over 30 files after successful moves you earned the Admin's Barnstar, and for going above and beyond the call of duty in this drive you earned the Teamwork Barnstar. Thanks again, and I hope you'll help out with future Wikimedia drives! – Quadell (talk) 18:33, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

Oh don't be shy! You deserve this 100%. Unfortunately the Move-to-Commons toolserver script has gotten a lot slower and less reliable since the drive ended, but hopefully it will be right as rain by the time the next drive starts. All the best, – Quadell (talk) 15:44, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear Drilnoth,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chlopeck (talkcontribs) 23:15, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Invitation to events: bot, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I thought you might want to know about some upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, extending functionality with JavaScript, the future of ResourceLoader and Gadgets, the new Lua templating system, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the Chennai event in March, the Berlin hackathon in June, the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC, or any other of our events.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumanah (talk) 15:45, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon. It's 1-3 June and registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with hotel/hostel, just mention it in the registration form.
This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, and socialising, primarily talking about Gadgets, the switch to Lua, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.
Our goals for the event are to bring 100-150 people together, with lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!
Details: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Berlin_Hackathon_2012
Thanks to Wikimedia Germany for hosting and coordinating this event. (Venue still to be determined.)

Thinking about doing Illustrations for WP DND, licensing advice

I'm hoping to do some illustrations to replace non-free and lesser quality images on WP DND articles and User:BOZ says I should talk to you about licensing, etc, so I can protect my artwork, etc. I'm basically thinking of doing some digital paintings, want advice on which ones the community would like to see me tackle, and would like to talk to somebody about the proper way to do it.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated. --Ezgoodnight (talk) 22:15, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks for your interest! First (and I know I state this on my user page, but I'm going to say it again here), I am not a lawyer.
What images were you thinking of replacing? Licensing could be very different depending on the nature of the image. As far as I know, the appearance of D&D monsters, books, etc. are all copyrighted by Wizards of the Coast, and so even original artwork depicting such things could be considered derivative (and therefore non-free). For example, File:Beholder_sketch.png is non-free because it is a derivative work, even though it was created by a Wikipedia user and not by Wizards of the Coast.
Further, I seem to recall that there were some images of D&D monsters (the mind flayer, specifically) which were created by users, which have been deleted because of the aforementioned copyright issues and conflicts with WP:OR; since the image is not an official one, it could be seen as original research.
However, don't despair! If you can give me some clarification as to what sort of images you're thinking of replacing, we may be able to find a way to make it happen.
I'm not very active on-wiki anymore, but I'll try to check back in a few days. Alternatively, you can email me using the link on my userpage. –Drilnoth (T/C) 16:37, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
The mindflayer image deletion discussion can be found here. Might want to ask Thumperward about that one as well; not sure if OR was the determining factor. BOZ (talk) 00:32, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Abuse Filter on the Article Feedback Tool

Hey there :). You're being contacted because you're an edit filter manager, At the moment, we're developing Version 5 of the Article Feedback Tool, which you may or may not have heard about. If you haven't; for the first time, this will involve a free-text box where readers can submit comments :). Obviously, there's going to be junk, and we want to minimise that junk. To do so, we're working the Abuse Filter into the tool.

For this to work, we need people to write and maintain filters. I'd be very grateful if you could take a look at the discussion here and the attached docs, and comment and contribute! Thanks :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 18:14, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

User script list deprecation

Wikipedia's list of user scripts is in bad shape, in that it is disorganized and contains many non-working, unmaintained, or thoroughly obsolete entries. Cleanup has been on the to-do list since 2007, but little progress has been made. Instead, the whole list is now set to be deprecated on 1 May 2012, to be replaced with a new list. This draft list has been up for about a month, and in that time I've been soliciting script users and authors to come add scripts they know to be working and relevant.

If you know of scripts that you would like to survive this deprecation (and are confirmed working and relevant), you're welcome to add them to the new list. Note that the old list will be retained and linked from the main list, so there is no real deadline. Thanks for your help. Equazcion (talk) 00:56, 22 Apr 2012 (UTC)

Dazzle

Hi, I was really looking forward to Dazzle, but it seems like my wait has been extended. Is it possible for others to take over your ideas? I know many Mediawiki coders who could help out. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 09:54, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

The code is open (under the same license as normal text on Wikipedia, CC-BY-SA-3.0), so it is certainly possible for others to continue developing it. However, the code that I did write is in all likelihood really bad... I was just starting to really program when I wrote it, and I'm sure its internals are very poorly designed. It would probably be better to just scrap it and start anew, taking ideas from what exists to write something different. –Drilnoth (T/C) 20:48, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

The article Mists of Krynn has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

A search for reliable, secondary sources reveals an insufficient amount of significant coverage. This game module fails Wikipedia's general notability guideline.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. AutoEd

Just curious - is the whitespace feature of autoed intended to remove white space in infobox parameters. I personally prefer that "=" to be lined up so you can quickly scan the parameters on the right to find the thing you want to fix. I've seen these removed recently by this tool and was wondering if that was intended or improper use of the tool. --Trödel 13:32, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

It's a feature, but I guess it is primarily a stylistic thing. I prefer not having excess whitespace. I'm not currently active or maintaining the program, though if you want to pursue having someone deactivate that part of it there are plenty of JavaScript coders on here who shouldn't have any trouble doing so. –Drilnoth (T/C) 16:01, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
Thanks - I'll wait and see before asking for a modification. The tool has been around a while and I haven't seen it used that way regularly. --Trödel 18:21, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

WikiProject Good articles (Participant Clean-Up)

Hello, you are receiving this message because you are currently a participant of WikiProject Good articles. Since the creation of the WikiProject, over 200 user's have joined to help review good article nominations and contribute to other sections of the WikiProject. Over the years, several of these users have stopped reviewing articles and/or have become inactive with the project but are still listed as participates. In order to improve communications with other participants and get newsletters sent out faster (newsletters will begin to be sent out monthly starting in October) all participants that are no longer active with the WikiProject will be removed from the participants list.

If you are still interested in being a participant for this WikiProject, please sign your user name here and please help review some articles so we can reduce the size of the backlog. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 05:57, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

Question re: an article

Hi, on the talk page for John Hartmann, which consists of little more than a sentence, I noticed you mentioning removing a speedy delete you had placed on the article in 2009, on the condition that more work be done on it. Please, have a look at it-- I'd ask to delete it, but saw your comment. Please have a look at it?? --Leahtwosaints (talk) 03:29, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

Hello! Now, some of you might be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers:
  • Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with, the Recruitment Centre will not open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available".
  • Co-Director: The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form. If interested, please contact me (Dom497).
  • Nominators, please read this: If you are not interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still help. In some cases a nominator may have an issue with an "inexperienced" editor (the recruitee) reviewing one of their nominations. To minimize the chances of this happening, if you are fine with a recruitee reviewing one of your nominations under the supervision of the recruiter, please add your name to the list at the bottom of this page. By adding your name to this list, chances are that your nomination will be reviewed more quickly as the recruitee will be asked to choose a nomination from the list of nominators that are OK with them reviewing the article.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing this program bring new reviewers to the Good article community and all the positive things it will bring along.

A message will be sent out to all recruiters regarding the date when the Recruitment Centre will open when it is determined. The message will also contain some further details to clarify things that may be a bit confusing.--Dom497 (talk)

WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

Hello! Now, some of you might have already received a similar message a little while ago regarding the Recruitment Centre, so if you have, there is no need to read the rest of this. This message is directed to users who have reviewed between 12-14 Good article nominations and are not part of WikiProject Good articles (the initial messages I sent out went to only WikiProject members and users that had over 15 reviews).

So for those who haven't heard about the Recruitment Centre yet, you may be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around it (to the right).

Now, one of the most important criteria is that you have at least 15 independent reviews. If you are reading this, you are likely 3 (or less) reviews short, so if you review another couple nominations, you can become a recruiter!

NOTE: If you are interested in becoming a recruiter but do not meet the 15 review requirement, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters and put your status as "Not Available" until you have reviewed enough nominations.

GAN December 2013 Backlog Drive

Hello! A GAN Backlog Drive will begin in less than 4 days!

In past Backlog Drives, the goal was to reduce the backlog of Good article nominations. In the upcoming drive, another goal will be added - raising as much money as we can for the Wikimedia Foundation. How will this work? Well, its pretty simple. Any user interested in donating can submit a pledge at the Backlog Drive page (linked above). The pledge should mention the amount of money the user is willing to donate per review. For example, if a user pledges 5 cents per review and 100 nominations are reviewed, the total donation amount is $5.00.

At the time this message was sent out, two users have submitted pledges for a total of 8 cents per review. All pledges, no matter how much money, are greatly appreciated. Also, in no way is this saying you must make a pledge.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or leave a message on the Backlog Drive talk page. And remember, there are less than 4 days before the drive starts!--EdwardsBot (talk) 03:15, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

Information icon Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in over one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, and that you have not been inactive for a three year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. March 2014 GAN Backlog Drive

It's that time again! Starting on March 1, there will be another GAN Backlog Drive! There will be several changes compared to previous drives:

  • This drive will introduce a new component to it; a point system. In a nutshell, older nominations are worth more points than newer nominations. The top 3 participants who have the points will be awarded the Golden, Silver, or Bronze Wikipedia Puzzle Piece Trophy, respectively.
  • Unlike the December 2013 Backlog Drive, earning an additional barnstar if you reached your goal has been removed.
  • The allowance to have insufficient reviews has been lowered to 2 before being disqualified.
  • An exception to the rule that all reviews must be completed before the deadline has been created.

Also, something that I thought I would share with all of you is that we raised $20.88 (USD) for the WMF in the December 2013 drive. It may not sound like a lot but considering that that was raised just because we reviewed articles, I would say that's pretty good! With that success, pledges can be made for the upcoming drive if you wish.

More info regarding the drive and full descriptions regarding the changes to this drive can be found on the the drive page. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a message on the drive talk page.

I look forward to your participation and hope that because of it, some day the backlog will be gone!

WikiProject Good articles Future GAN Backlog Drive

Hello everyone! Hope you've all been having a great summer!

TheQ Editor recently proposed the idea of having another Backlog Drive in either September/October or November/December of this year. For those of you who have participated in the past two drives you know I was the one who organized them, however, come September, this will be my most important year in school so I will not be able to coordinate this drive (if it happens). TheQ Editor has volunteered to be a coordinator for the drive. If any of you would like to co-coordinator, please notify TheQ Editor on his talk page.

If you would be interested in participating in a Backlog Drive sometime before the end of this year, please notify TheQ Editor. Also, make sure to specify what month(s) work best for you.

At the time this message was sent out, the backlog was at 520 nominations. Since May, the backlog has been steadily increasing and we are currently near an all time high. Even though the backlog will not disappear over one drive, this drive can lead to several others which will (hopefully) lead to the day where there is no longer a backlog.

As always, the more participants, the better, and everyone is encouraged to participate!

GA Cup

Hello everyone! We hope you have all been having a great summer!

As we all know, the recent GAN Backlog Drives have not had any big impact on the backlog. Because of that, me (Dom497), Figureskatingfan, and TheQ Editor have worked on an idea that could possibly finally put a dent into the massive backlog. Now, I will admit, the idea isn't entirely ours as we have took the general idea of the WikiCup and brought it over to WikiProject Good Articles. But anyways, here's what we have in mind:

For all of you that do not know what the WikiCup is, it is an annual competition between several editors to see who can get the most Good Articles, Featured Article's, Did You Know's, etc. Based of this, we propose to you the GA Cup. This competition will only focus on reviewing Good articles.

For more info on the proposal, click here. As a FYI, the proposal page is not what the final product will look like (if you do go ahead with this idea). It will look very similar to WikiCup's page(s).

The discussion for the proposal will take place here. Please let us know if you are interested, have any concerns, things to consider, etc.

WikiProject Good Articles - GA Cup

WikiProject Good articles is holding a new competition, the GA Cup, from October 1, 2014 - March 28, 2015. The Cup will be based on reviewing Good article nominations; for each review, points will be awarded with bonuses for older nominations, longer articles and comprehensive reviews. All participants will start off in one group and the highest scoring participants will go through to the second round. At the moment six rounds are planned, but this may change based on participant numbers.

Some of you may ask: what is the purpose for a competition of this type? Currently, there is a backlog of about 500 unreviewed Good article nominations, almost an all time high. It is our hope that we can decrease the backlog in a fun way, through friendly competition.

Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors! Sign-ups will be open until October 15, 2014 so sign-up now!

If you have any questions, take a look at the FAQ page and/or contact one of the four judges.

Cheers from NickGibson3900, Dom497, TheQ Editor and Figureskatingfan.

  • Not a clue at this point. I haven't really touched that code (or this site, for that matter) in years. If it is still a useful tool these days, another scripter could probably take a look. It shouldn't be too complicated of a script, though it likely has many faults left in it since, if I remember correctly, it was one of the first scripts I worked on. Invitation to subscribe to the edit filter mailing list

Hi, as a user in the edit filter manager user group we wanted to let you know about the new wikipedia-en-editfilters mailing list. As part of our recent efforts to improve the use of edit filters on the English Wikipedia it has been established as a venue for internal discussion by edit filter managers regarding private filters (those only viewable by administrators and edit filter managers) and also as a means by which non-admins can ask questions about hidden filters that wouldn't be appropriate to discuss on-wiki. As an edit filter manager we encourage you to subscribe; the more users we have in the mailing list the more useful it will be to the community. If you subscribe we will send a short email to you through Wikipedia to confirm your subscription, but let us know if you'd prefer another method of verification. I'd also like to take the opportunity to invite you to contribute to the proposed guideline for edit filter use at WP:Edit filter/Draft and the associated talk page. Thank you! Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Drilnoth. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:47, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi AFigureOfBlue.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:46, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

JavaScript RegExp problem

I noticed you have experience in JavaScript. I'm hoping you can help me with a problem I've run into writing a userscript.

Please see my post at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject JavaScript#Nested RegExp.

Thank you. The Transhumanist 12:16, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

Broken userscripts

Hi, I just want to let you know, that I have blanked your userscript User:Drilnoth/delresized.js, as it is no longer up to date with current coding guidelines and was using functions from User:Drilnoth/toolkit.js]] that have now been removed after they had been deprecated for over 6 years. Since this causes users of your scripts to receive fatal errors, it seemed best to blank them until such a time where you or someone else finds the time to repair them. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 19:47, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

Invitation to Admin confidence survey

Hello,

Beginning in September 2017, the Wikimedia Foundation Anti-harassment tool team will be conducting a survey to gauge how well tools, training, and information exists to assist English Wikipedia administrators in recognizing and mitigating things like sockpuppetry, vandalism, and harassment.

The survey should only take 5 minutes, and your individual response will not be made public. This survey will be integral for our team to determine how to better support administrators.

To take the survey sign up here and we will send you a link to the form.

We really appreciate your input!

Please let us know if you wish to opt-out of all massmessage mailings from the Anti-harassment tools team.

Merry Christmas!

I'm wishing you a Merry Christmas, because that is what I celebrate. If you don't like Christmas or just don't celebrate it in any of its forms, then please accept a generic "Happy Holidays". If you celebrate no holidays at this time of year, then hopefully you will be satisfied with an even more generic "Season's Greetings".  :) BOZ (talk) 00:59, 23 December 2017 (UTC)

Stale draft

Greetings! I was combing through stale drafts when I happened across one of yours: User:Drilnoth/Sandbox. Seeing as you aren't currently using it, would you be willing to either blank it, redirect it to List of Rock Band track packs#Rock Band Track Pack: Classic Rock, or delete it under CSD U1? Thanks! Section blanked; thanks for letting me know. -–Drilnoth (T/C) 01:28, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
