2019-20 Women's basketball rankings

[edit]

Appreciate you filling in the preseason rankings for the women's basketball! I found the actual link for the coaches poll so hopefully that works through the season. I still can't find the AP poll link. All I can find is this link to an article about the top 25. Last year, I found the link to the full poll off that similar article from Doug. I'd appreciate the help filling in the rankings throughout the season. Also, a ton of season pages need to get made. If you want to help just let me know. I did a lot of the acc ones last year.

Cheers Swimmer33 (talk) 18:34, 1 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, it's so hard to find the poll this year - I was wondering if they forgot to vote!  ;-)
I was slowly going to add the Big Ten (ranked) teams first, then I'll take a look at the rest of the ranked teams. Hoof Hearted (talk) 19:22, 1 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Last year I did the ACC teams but that was it. I know in previous years the article used ESPN as the source for the rankings, so I guess its fine until something else becomes available. Swimmer33 (talk) 20:57, 4 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

[edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Herzeleid

[edit]

You kindly added music to the hymn "Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid", without saying what it is. It looks like a Bach setting, but which? The text explains that he set stanzas four-part, but in cantatas not the first one. As he was careful expressing single words of the text, you can't just take a setting with different text. I almost feel that just the melody would be better, with the chorale moved to a cantata article. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:41, 6 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Gerda Arendt: Yes, perhaps I got ahead of myself. I've been having some fun learning the <score> module in Wikipedia, and thought I'd apply it to any articles in Category:Hymn tunes that didn't have a score or sound file. After I placed it, I noticed the various BMV articles and became confused about the differences. Perhaps this article is misplaced in a category called "Hymn tunes" (is the tune actually called "Herr Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht")? In any case, I'll remove the lyrics if you think that will suffice. Feel free to remove the Music section entirely if you think I overstepped the meaning. Hoof Hearted (talk) 21:37, 6 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
First of all: good if you have fun! The setting seems to be this one, which readers will find in the article with one click, and the correct text. You are right about the melody better for "Herr Jesu CHrist", - we should write that article ;) - I guess the category "without hymn tune" is meant to mean hymns always sung to a different tune, not that they miss something. Many articles of hymns miss the music, though. woujld you be willing to add it? "Dein Lob, Herr, ruft der Himmel aus", for example, found here. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 03:55, 7 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be glad to do that. It may take me a while - still a lot of trial and error as I learn the code. Hoof Hearted (talk) 13:17, 7 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Done I only did the first verse as I couldn't find a copy without the watermark over verse 2 (which may be subject to copyright). Hoof Hearted (talk) 14:20, 7 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

On the topic of tunes

[edit]

Very appreciated! However; when adding four part settings, it's better to use /voiceOne and /voiceTwo instead of /stemUp and /stemDown; as the latter tends to mess up slurs (which often end up occupying the same space as the notes of the voice above). Also, use "r" instead of "s" for silent voices, since silent voices don't disappear... (also, that is the typical formatting that is seen in published music). I've corrected this in a few articles, if there are any other I trust this simple fix can be done without too much trouble. 107.190.33.254 (talk) 17:40, 14 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Yes, I was experiencing the slur issue you described and without knowing about the /voice command, thought /stem was the lesser of evils. I also preferred not printing the rests for independent voices (using "s" instead), as the sheet music I was using as reference didn't contain them. I'll start using /voice and "r" from now on. Thanks again for the lesson.
Here is a list of all the articles to which I've added music, if you'd like to review them:

Wiktionary templates

[edit]

Hi Hoof Hearted,

You helped with combining 2 Wiktionary terms into 1 box at Mawsim (disambiguation), thank you. I guess you must be good at technical issues, I'm not, and I'd like to ask you 2 related questions.

  1. The template you used is not ideal in that case, it leads to "Look up A or B in Wiktionary", and the 2 linked terms are NOT identical, so ideally it should read "Look up A and B in Wiktionary". Any solution?
  2. I find the template for Wiktionary links (box always to the RIGHT, and UNDER the infobox) very impractical: it can be easily overlooked (see for instance at Tan-Tan Moussem, it looks like a well-hidden afterthought). Users are not editors, whatever lacks visibility is easily overlooked. Our target group is seldom the Web-savvy teenager with perfect eyesight. Can the Wiktionary box be moved to the left, and to the top of the page/of a section?

As a result of that, if the template offers no other options, maybe it would be better to revert the edit at Mawsim (disambiguation) and leave it as it is at Tan-Tan Moussem. Thanks, Arminden (talk) 11:13, 19 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Arminden:
  1. I don't think "or" implies the terms are identical. On the contrary, listing multiple terms within {{wiktionary}} is helpful for linking to variations of a term. If you are looking for definition A go there, or, if you are looking for definition B go here. Consider the template's usage at Janus (disambiguation) or Kam (disambiguation).
  2. See if any of the other wiktionary templates are to your liking (perhaps {{See Wiktionary}}?). However, for disambiguation pages {{wiktionary}} or {{wiktionary pipe}} are prescribed according to MOS:WTLINK. Hoof Hearted (talk) 18:36, 19 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much! I'll see what they offer. Arminden (talk) 18:45, 19 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Do not wikilink any other words in the line." A DAB page is for navigation, not information Hoof Hearted (talk) 13:42, 16 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Hoof Hearted. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Melanie Kroupa Books, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Doesn't fit any of the G14 critieria, sadly. Needs to go to XFD. Thank you. GedUK  12:29, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
