Nice work. I once spent a morning helping poison a patch of the stuff by hand to keep it from beating out the local Stylisma pickeringii. Are you familiar with either Biodiversity Heritage Library or Botanicus? Between them, they have all but the past few years of American Fern Journal and many of the East Coast botanical journals available free online; maybe there's something there you'll find useful for your coast. "Salix arbusculoides" somehow got promoted by itself. Not sure what to do with the other 5. I'll try to make hooks for them on Template:Did you know nominations/Salix richardsonii, Salix brachycarpa, Salix glauca, Salix hastata, Salix pulchra. Thanks. --PFHLai (talk) 02:14, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

...for making some unusual plants appear in Wikipedia, in this case Narthecium americanum. I should be able to get a photo for that this summer. (I'll try to get it in bloom at Webb's Mill, but I should be visiting Warren Grove in the fall.) I might just stumble across Euphorbia purpurea elsewhere (I'll be botanizing something else in an area with known populations), but that's likely to be harder to spot. Use of Italics

[edit]

Greetings, I am visiting because I've noticed your contributions posted in Colorado Project articles; those pertaining to genus and species that are italicized (some genus italicized, some genus not italicized) and some article titles which are italicized have intrigued my curiosity. Why the italics are being used (in particular the list of recent articles and changes at the WP:Colorado section)? I am a recently new editor and so far I've found that the use of italics refer to book titles, and certain other policy/guideline factors discouraging use of italics for emphasis. This is just my need to know (biology taxonomically) about italicized species and genus. And as an end note - kudos on all your contributions, hopefully I might be able to emulate the efforts in my own contributions  O = M C 4  17:01, 19 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Definately handy information to know. When handwritten, how are they denoted and why not the higher orders? Thanks for such a speedy response and for the links above.  O = M C 4  21:43, 19 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

While reviewing the links above, I made some edits. My boldness increases with every edit; so far I have no peer reviews or comments of such edits and would appreciate some feedback should you be so inclined. Speedy deletion nomination of Melic

[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Melic requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. Alexf(talk) 13:04, 22 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Justlettersandnumbers tagged this[2] as a "blatant" vopyright violation, without citing any examples. The articles as I been finding them (typically first written by you, IceCreamAntiSocial), are all essentially already in this format, but in narrative paragraph form, without inline citations. I have started breaking them into sections, putting in the inline citations, and adding in bits and pieces from other sources or different pages of the same source. I can see how this would look like a copyright violation to anyone that does not know that most field guides, when used as a source, all say about the same content, with variations on the wording.

To a non-botanist, this may look like a coyright violation. But it is not a copyright violation. The article cites three sources. The source I used in one example, Mojave Desert Wildflowers, is a field guide that is based on the Jepson Manual. Anyone who uses Jepson (the only thing going in California) would write essentially the same article. If someone had a different field guide, it would be based on Jepson, and result in essentially the same article, too. Plants are typically identified, e.g., in the Jepson Manual, by location (habitat and range -what kind of place, how far and wide they are found, etc.), and by a taxonomic description - overall growth pattern (e.g. shrub, tree, etc.), leaves and stems, flowers and fruit, and sometimes a history of the genus and species name, or of its use by humans or other animals (or plants).

Can you help explain this to Justlettersandnumbers, or explain how to write the above mentioned article without it appearing to be a copyright violation to a non-user of Jepson? (I am putting this same note on PlantDrew's talk page, since PlantDrew seemed to be watching my first few edits.) FloraWilde (talk) 01:35, 30 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

LA edit-a-thons on February 14, 17, and 21

[edit]
Redondo Loves Wikipedia (2/14), Wik-Ed Women (2/17), and Unforgetting LA at the Getty (2/21)!

Dear fellow Wikipedian,

The LA Wikipedia community has three events in mid-February -- please consider attending!

First, we have a Valentine's Day edit-a-thon appropriately named Redondo Loves Wikipedia, which will take place at the Redondo Beach Public Library from 10am to 1pm on Saturday, February 14. Join library staff, the Redondo Beach Historical Society, and others to help improve Wikipedia's coverage of Redondo Beach!

Second, we have a Wik-Ed Women editing session on Tuesday, February 17 from 6pm to 10pm at the Los Angeles Contemporary Archive downtown. This series of informal get-togethers is designed to encourage Los Angeles women-in-the-arts (though all are welcome!) to contribute their expertise to Wikipedia, specifically expanding content about women artists.

Third, we have an Unforgetting LA event put on by East of Borneo in collaboration with the Getty Research Institute. Come help improve Wikipedia's coverage of LA design and architecture, and have an awesome free day at the museum -- parking will be validated for edit-a-thon participants! If you'd like to use particular books from GRI's great collection, be sure to email before 2/13 (instructions at event page).

And be sure to check out our main meetup page, because we already have three SoCal events scheduled for early March!

Please drop by to contribute your own work or teach other users how to write for Wikipedia.

Second, there will be an event at the Redondo Beach Public Library (following up on last month's session), in collaboration with the Redondo Beach Historical Society. Please join us from 10am to noon on Saturday, March 28 at the main branch of the Redondo Beach Public Library!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Asking for image upload

[edit]

Hello, I saw that years ago You uploaded some images of bees (like this) as Tortie tude: since I'm not an expert of Wiki-Commons, I wanted to demand to You if it is possible to You and could try to upload some images - that unfortunately are lacking - of bees poisoned by pesticides, such as this one in the site of Anonymous news, that I think should be added in some Wikipedia's pages (such as Pollinator decline or Pesticide misuse etc.).
