Hello, I nominated Kalduny for deletion mainly because I couldn't verify anything in the article. Someone has now taken the time to add two references to the article. The article still has problems such as weasel words (E.g. "Some people maintain it came from...") but I am changing my vote to Keep. I thought you might like to know. Areography

Please tell me what you know about Mars? Have you studied it professionally? Obviously not, otherwise you wouldn't undo my changes. You're probably not even an astronomer, just some enthusiast who thinks he knows everything. 144.82.106.153 10:31, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The editors here prefer Geography of Mars, so it stays like that. It appears even the scientists don't use it. I have access to JGR and have not seen the term used once throughout all the various journals (I checked). Neither is it seen in the various open access journals. Areography also means the geographical area in which a population of a species resides and we want to keep open that option, too. Geography of Mars is also the more common and user-friendly term. Also, copy and paste moves have to be fixed by admins to preserve the page history. Also, the use of the word areography (relating to Mars) is comparable to some of the non-notable neologisms that get deleted here, see this.
P.S. reverse DNS says you're from University College London. We could appreciate an expert whipping all the articles on Martian geography into shape. Please create an account and see WP:MARS for project coordination. MER-C 11:09, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Maintenance Tags as User Page Components

Hi, I am just a beginner at HTML. Offhand, is there a way to put a tag like the Weasel Words tag on a user page w/o having it show up on adminstrative lists? I like the tag a lot, and it helps define who I am as a Wikipedian. --McTrixie/Mr Accountable 11:37, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It would take two edits, the first being {{subst:weasel}} and the second to remove the Category:Articles with weasel words. MER-C 11:44, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds complicated. --McTrixie/Mr Accountable 12:06, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Try it out in a personal sandbox: type {{subst:weasel}}, save, edit the page again, remove Category:Articles with weasel words and save again. With other templates, look at the the template page and see what category the template places the article in and remove accordingly. MER-C 12:11, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Am I Being Too Nice?

For userpages that are quite definitely spam, should I skip mfd and slap a csd on it? Or should I continue with mfds? -WarthogDemon 02:38, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You are being too nice. The speedy tag works all the time, mfd isn't required. Any user page which is about a company, organisation or website is automatically blatant spam. If you aren't sure it's spam, prod it. MER-C 03:33, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Owen Sound Collegiate and Vocational Institute

Hi. I removed your prod tag on Owen Sound Collegiate and Vocational Institute. Trust me, this is not out of love for school articles. :-) But I wanted to move the page OSCVI to Owen Sound Collegiate and Vocational Institute. The content that was at OSCVI is not very convincing either but it's still much better than the version you prod'ed. Feel free to nominate for AfD if you think it still doesn't cut it. Grosvenor PFC

I see you were fighting a somewhat losing battle regarding the AfD template on the Grosvenor PFC article. I've relisted the debate on the December 9 AfD log as it went most of the discussion period without the template on the article. I've notified the original nominator of what occurred, but thought you might be interested. I haven't yet checked if this ongoing vandalism was reported on the admin notice board. Agent 86 00:57, 9 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Man, that's the first time I've ever seen the {{spam4im}} template. No mincing words there! While I agree with the concept, I think that it could use some tuning up. Ghosh page

Hi MER-C,

I am an inexperienced user of Wikipedia, but noticed you have helped revert some changes to the Ghosh project page by user obc sadgope. I am also trying to get this page to a better state by supporting the edits of knowledgable users.

To be honest the user we have had the most problems with is User Avaranjan ghosh, who is determined to keep one of the sections out (on "Sadgope Ghosh"). I think (no proof) this is a bit of Indian caste chauvinism, but either way it would be good to hear his reasons for making changes (as requested in the talk pages)

Unfortunately he has chosen not to do this, but has instead recently started to use foul and abusive language on the talk page - not engaging in discussion just writing "B*stard you are a mother fu**er" etc in hindi on the page.

I have reverted back the abuse, but we can seem to engage him in discussion on the talk page.

My worry is that the page won't develop with much needed references etc, but will just descend into revert and re-revert.

Any hints and tips?

Thanks,

Fonoq35 12:58, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd suggest turning it into a disambiguation page differentiating all notable people with that surname. Google is a good place to start when looking for references. And I've added some maintainance tags, which means someone will get around to adding sources... eventually. MER-C 13:14, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why was Computer Aid removed?

Ok, I admit I'm very new to wikipedia.

But when I saw nintek appear in Computer companies of Australia, I thought: hey if they can have a place in wikipedia, why can't Computer Aid?

Is it that Nintek is a larger company than Computer Aid (and thus more worthy of belonging to an encyclopedia)? Or is that that a company cannot insert their own page?

I'd like to know under what circumstances a company can be added (I've read the FAQs, but I'm still somewhat puzzled)...

On Notability

I created the Future of Forestry page you proposed for deletion. It is the first page I created, so please excuse me for asking what is probably a really basic question to you. If I add external reviews from places like Infuze magazine and DrivenFarOff.com, their inclusion on a compilation from EMI and info on their upcoming National tour, will that make them notable enough for you to think the page shouldn't be deleted?

Thanks, Nothingcorporate 07:47, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do you think the band satisfies WP:MUSIC? Drivenfaroff.com seems to be a blog, so it wouldn't count as a reliable source. I think this is worthy of further debate by the Wikipedia community. Feel free to express your opinion. MER-C 07:53, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
They meet 4 criteria (of which they only need to meet 1), which I've detailed on the further debate like you suggested. Since you're way more learned on Wiki standards than I am, would you mind taking a look at my explanation on the debate page and let me know what you think. I updated the band's page to include all the refrences, reviews, and albums that I have mentioned in my opinion.
Thanks again for your help,

Background

Hi,

I was notified that you have suggested that my name be removed from Wikipedia, because you believe it was included as a self-promotion.

I am not sure what the proper procedure is in these matters, but I would like you to know that there have been about 200 articles written about myself and my invention by the independent press around the world.

Articles written among others, by The New York Times, Forbes, Seybold Report, Publishers Weekly, Chicago Tribune, The Handbook of Printing published by the Rochester Institute of Technology, and live interviews in National Public Radio, etc.

There is a lists of some of them at:

http://www.instabook.net/articles/articles_list.php

Perhaps this will clarify things for you? I would be very grateful if you checked those references.

Thank you for your attention.

Regards,

He made enormous contributions to Classical Assyrian Music. He was also a gifted painter specializing in Assyrian landscaps. His medium was water color and black ink. [User Zayya] 17 December 2006
The article is already gone, so when you recreate it you should include an assertion of notability so it doesn't run into a speedy deletion. MER-C 02:42, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The AfD was closed and the result was "Keep (no consensus)." The article on FFR is currently pending deletion review; however, this does not give you permission to blank the page and replace it with a redirect. - Chardish 07:26, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You should be taking it up with Ashibaka, who did the initial redirection. I reverted an anon who called that vandalism (which it wasn't). You should be assuming good faith instead. P.S. shouldn't there be a tag saying the article is on DRV? MER-C 07:50, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
From WP:VAN: ...replacing entire established articles with a spurious redirect is a common vandal edit. Apologies if you took my usage of the vandalism tag as a personal attack; I meant no offense. - Chardish 08:03, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I know what you mean, I've seen it before. However this redirect is not spurious, it makes sense. MER-C 08:08, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He has been vandalizing that page if you had paid attention to its history. I am only reverting the page to where everyone seems to agree it should be except for him. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.172.203.203 (talk)

You have the opportunity to defend yourself on the relevant admins' noticeboard. We'll see what the admins have to say about it. MER-C 09:54, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You participated in the Jawbone Radio AfD a couple of weeks ago. It's now up for deletion review. Regards, Alphachimp 05:02, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
