False claim of vandalism

[edit]

Do not make claims in edit summaries that valid edits are vandalism as you just did at Hermann Hoth. Not only is that extremely poor wiki-etiquette, but it is highly misleading and just wrong. It is also disruptive, and you have been here long enough to know that it is not ok. If you make an edit and it is reverted or substantively changed, then follow WP:BRD and start a discussion on the talk page. Thanks, Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 11:58, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Peacemaker67: sorry, I assumed vandalism because it is self evident that it is an improvement. Cheers MisterBee1966 (talk) 12:03, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I completely disagree. It clearly is not an improvement. It adds confusion. Adding the literal translation doesn't help the reader's understanding one iota. English speakers will easily work out that Generalmajor translates as Major General without being told (likewise Generalleutnant), but adding it doesn't help their understanding at all, because that wasn't the equivalent rank at the time. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 13:01, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Peacemaker67: Let's agree to disagree, but you are the boss here and subsequently the gatekeeper of information. I can agree to you latest edit which adds "equivalent to". We are all good here MisterBee1966 (talk) 13:28, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
In the WWII era, Generalmajor and Generalleutnant are one rank below the literal translations that you provide. Generalmajor is equivalent to brigadier and Generalleutnant is major general. The Germans had General der XX which is their equivalent of the American/Commonwealth Lieutenant General.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 01:22, 6 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Precisely Sturm. I'm hardly the "boss" or "gatekeeper" MB, and I resent the assertion that I behave in that way. You initiated this by reverting my legitimate edit as "vandalism". If you want to have a substantive discussion about the merits or otherwise of your edits versus mine, let's have one on the talk page in question. Consensus will rule, as it should on WP. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 01:38, 6 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Sturmvogel 66: @Peacemaker67: May I remind you of that my edit was: Generalmajor (Brigadier General—lit.'Major General') and Generalleutnant (Major General—lit.'Lieutenant General'). I did this to reflect exactly what Sturmvogel 66 said, a German Generalmajor semantically equates to a brigadier general while linguistically it translates to major general, likewise for the Generalleutnant. My addition was therefore 100% factually, semantically and linguistically correct. As said, how to reflect this ambiguity in translation is a matter of style and I am okay with the current "equates to" result. Cheers MisterBee1966 (talk) 04:34, 6 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Wilhelm Batz.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Wilhelm Batz.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to the history of each individual page for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 10:00, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Karl-Heinz Becker (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Replaceable non-free use File:Bruno Loerzer.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Bruno Loerzer.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of non-free use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.

Thank you. Cakelot1 ☞️ talk 13:34, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

List of World War II aces credited with 100 or more victories

[edit]

It seems to me that the title of this article should include either German or Luftwaffe. I think a reader might expect to find all World War II aces with 100 or more victories from every country under the current title. If you think there is a good reason not to include this, let me know. From limited knowledge and a quick look at a few other lists, I think it is likely that no other country had aces with that many victories. Perhaps that should be mentioned as well (or maybe instead?).

I think it would be good to include a reference in the introduction since there is nothing in the article which mentions this information with a reference. I will not go so far as to say it is required, but I could see someone sticking a cn tag on it in the future.

Let me know whether you agree with these suggestions. Then I will go ahead with the assessment. This is a great article and I look forward to putting the BL assessment on it. Donner60 (talk) 10:14, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

All the 100+ victory aces are German. Other nations rotated their pilots between combat and training duties, operated inferior aircraft or just saw sporadic combat in response to Allied attacks.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 14:05, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hartmann Grasser

[edit]

I have assessed Hartmann Grasser as B class for all projects. I took the liberty of changing "United States Armed Forces" to "United States Army" as the force which took Grasser prisoner at the end of the war. United States Armed Forces is a general article about all service branches. It has a template that shows it needs substantial improvement. More to the point, only the U.S. Army would have been taking prisoners after the Nazi surrender. The U.S. Marines did not fight in Europe. If you believe my change is an error, please change it. As info, there is also an article on Military history of the United States during World War II. I looked through part of it quickly but did not see a direct reference to taking prisoners by the U.S. Army. However, I would not expect such a long overall article to have that level of specificity. Thanks for your work on this. Donner60 (talk) 02:17, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Preview – Consolidate – Summarize

[edit]

Hello- Below are a few editing suggestions to make it easier for you and others to collaborate on the encyclopedia. Please preview, consolidate, and summarize your edits:

  • Try to consolidate your edits, at least at the section level, to avoid cluttering the page's edit history; this makes it easier for your fellow editors to understand your intentions, and makes it easier for those monitoring activity on the article.
    • The show preview button (beside the "publish changes" button) is helpful for this; use it to view your changes incrementally before finally saving the page once you're satisfied with your edits.
  • Please remember to explain each edit with an edit summary (box above the "publish changes" button).

Thanks in advance for considering these suggestions. Eric talk 19:21, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I have reassessed the article as B class. I am going offline for several days so I thought I would clear this one because there is only one small issue. Please add a citation for the last sentence in the first paragraph of World War II: "He downed another 24 by the end of the year." I suspect that the citation after the preceding sentence is the source but I don't have access to it so I cannot confirm this. If you do not have a source, deleting the sentence is an alternative. Thanks. Donner60 (talk) 02:57, 19 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I see this is tagged for American English. While I am adamant about adding this tag to US unit articles, I wonder if it's needed for a German. Also there's a reference to Jafü Holland. Isn't this short for Jagdführer Holland? I didn't check to see who started the [[refgroup=note]] for the Notes. I've used that format myself, but {{efn|}} is available and lists notes alphabetically. Good work, BTW. Lineagegeek (talk) 20:34, 19 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
