Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Olympics
Points of interest related to Olympics on Wikipedia: Portal – Category – WikiProject – Alerts – Deletions – Stubs – Assessment |
This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Olympics. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.
- Adding a new AfD discussion
- Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
- Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
- You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Olympics|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
- There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
- Removing a closed AfD discussion
- Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
- Other types of discussions
- You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Olympics. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
- Further information
- For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.
This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Sports.

This person is not notable as per WP:SPORTSPERSON and WP:GNG. The only other source I could find for this person was from worldrowing.com, found on Egyptian Arabic Wikipedia, which I don't know if it is a reliable source or not. Duke of New Gwynedd (talk | contrib.) 01:44, 4 December 2024 (UTC)

Redirect to Boxing at the 1936 Summer Olympics – Welterweight - no significant coverage in any sources apart from listings type sites, and the corresponding jawiki is similarly unsourced. Subject finished 17th in class in the 1936 Olympics. I therefore submit that the article does not meet WP:NSPORT in its own right, but a redirect to the competition page is appropriate. Keep. I added some sources and it looks like he had a career after the Olympics that was, at minimum, interesting. I think with more research we could have a good article here. ScribblingTiresias (talk) 00:04, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
- Comment ScribblingTiresias you had accidentally switched one of the sources in the reference to the Meiji Shrine Games, so I altered that. I am not averse to keeping the article, but I would not say that the sources represent WP:SIGCOV - they are all stats / listings sources apart from the journal article (nice find!), which only gives him a somewhat passing mention. I am a bit surprised that there appears to be nothing on kowiki, though my Korean is by no means good enough to be absolutely certain about that. SunloungerFrog (talk) 00:41, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
- Comment Well, I did find this on kowiki - looks like he might have won another national competition. But no article in his own right as far as I can see. SunloungerFrog (talk) 00:54, 4 December 2024 (UTC)

The article mentions Sanchez was a semi-finalist in the Olympics, but there's nothing that mentions winning a medal there. According to the categories, she did win a silver medal in the Pan American Games, but the ultimate issue is sourcing; I only found database results in the WP:BEFORE search. - Keep per WP:SPORTSPERSON. Sánchez's silver medal at the 2007 Pan American Games can be confirmed here:[5]. It was in the women's K-4 500 metres canoeing category (Canoeing at the 2007 Pan American Games). Other examples of independent coverage include the following: [6][7][8]. --NoonIcarus (talk) 18:58, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- That guideline says Sports biographies must include at least one reference to a source providing significant coverage of the subject. Where exactly is the significant coverage in any of those sources that you've linked? Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 19:24, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- Comment I agree, the article was not ready at all shape. 🌼𝓡𝓬 𝓡𝓪𝓶𝔃🍁 (talk) 01:45, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- Comment The article lacks citations, contains insufficient information, and has numerous flaws. It is not adequately developed or reliable enough for the mainspace in its current state, and it does not conform to what Wikipedia stands for. Furthermore, it fails to follow Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for creating an article. 🌼𝓡𝓬 𝓡𝓪𝓶𝔃🍁 (talk) 01:35, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- Please mind WP:HASPOT. The subject's notability is not determined by the article's current quality. Rather, the question should be if the article can be improved. I can try helping with this if needed. --NoonIcarus (talk) 19:21, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- I cited WP:SPORTSPERSON because
A sportsperson is presumed to be notable if the person has won a significant honor
, which is the silver medal won at the Pan American Games, and this source[9] furthers mentions that she also participated in the 2015 Games. There could be more coverage, but the subject it is independent as shown in the sources, particularly those in Spanish. --NoonIcarus (talk) 18:56, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- Delete its still lacks of coverage, information as well as references and citation, not ready for mainspace...when using the article for creation and submission, many articles were declined. However, it is very upsetting to see this one published despite its clear flaws. 🌼𝓡𝓬 𝓡𝓪𝓶𝔃🍁 (talk) 01:35, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- Comment 1,2 to 3 sources is not enough to cover the one sentence article and as you visit the publisher its not notable and reputable enough and Wikipedia doesn't support any of those. 🌼𝓡𝓬 𝓡𝓪𝓶𝔃🍁 (talk) 01:49, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- Delete per nom. No news articles about this person that I can find, only databases, and WP:SPORTSPERSON is actually the reason why it shouldn't be kept. Procyon117 (talk) 13:06, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- Agree Indeed its not notable enough to pass Wikipedia standards. 🌼𝓡𝓬 𝓡𝓪𝓶𝔃🍁 (talk) 08:49, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- I would be very careful with your continued commenting, Rc ramz. While I believe that responding to any, even all, comments in a discussion with productive and engaging replies is good and acceptable, you are not doing that - you are replying with agreement or mere reiteration of, well, every comment you agree with. This is pointless and unnecessary, and appears to me as a way of just creating more noise for your side to try influence a closer. That's WP:Bludgeoning. Kingsif (talk) 21:08, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- Draftify I'm pretty certain I will be able to expand this bio to WP standards - editors who know my work will know that Olympian stubs and Venezuelan stubs are an area of expertise and this is both - but don't have the time right now. Kingsif (talk) 17:54, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- Comment People with English-language browsers will as a rule be shown fewer foreign-language results, so if people are wanting to look for potential sources it would be useful to include some Spanish. The general Spanish word for canoe as a sport is piragüismo, though in Venezuela it is more common to use canotaje, and adding either or both of those to a browser search for her name will probably deliver more than just her name.
