New naming convention
A new naming convention for places in Slovakia is being discussed at User_talk:Elonka/Hungarian-Slovakian_experiment#Proposed_naming_convention. Your input will be greatly appreciated. Since these new rules might be later regarded as a precedent by non-involved editors (remember the Danzig/Gdansk case?), I think you will find this ongoing discussion and poll interesting. WikiProject Organization
Any of you guys think it would be a good idea to make our own system of evaluation here like some other projects? I think we should establish our own peer review and B-class review. I think this would help the organization of Czech related articles. It wouldn't be too much work, just make a section on this page for peer review and we'd give editors feedback, then we'd find B-class Czech articles and make an evaluation system similar to FA (albeit on a much smaller scale), there aren't many of them. Anybdy think this is a good idea? The Dominator

- I recall, that many projects have quite similar rules (i.e. copy and paste) :), maybe we should do that as well. - Darwinek (talk) 09:58, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

So all we'd need to do is search through Category:B-Class Czech Republic articles, there aren't many of them and I think that we can discount the ones not directly related to the Czech Republic. I'll create Wikipedia:WikiProject Czech Republic/B-class review, but I want to know if there's going to be activity, there's no point in creating it if nobody pays attention to it, I don't feel like searching through other projects and just copying it, so I'll create it manually. An Invitation from the Philippine Wikipedia Community
Hello folks,
The Philippine Wikipedia Community will be holding its 1st Meet-up in Cebu City (the fourth one in the Philippines) on June 23-24, 2008. This coincides with the first Philippine Open Source Summit also to be held in Cebu, and which the Philippine Wikipedia Community is a Implementing Partner in. We invite you to join us in this event. If you are in the IT or IT-enabled services industry, this would be a great opportunity to network with leaders from the 4th best outsourcing city in the world. This is also a good excuse to visit our beautiful beaches :)
If you're interested in joining the Wikipedia meet-up, please join our discussion. To register for the Open Source Summit, please contact CEDF-IT. If you would like some assistance with local accomodations, you may email User:Bentong Isles.

Draft Guidelines for Lists of companies by country - Feedback Requested
Within WikiProject Companies I am trying to establish guidelines for all Lists of companies by country, the implementation of which would hopefully ensure a minimum quality standard and level of consistency across all of these related but currently disparate articles. The ultimate goal is the improvement of these articles to Featured List status. As a WikiProject that currently has one of these lists within your scope, I would really appreciate your feedback! You can find the draft guidelines here. Thanks for your help as we look to build consensus and improve Wikipedia! - Richc80 (talk) 21:18, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
Kingdom of Bohemia
I recently found the article Kingdom of Bohemia. Much of the historical information at Bohemia could be moved to KoB; the B article would provide an overview of the region and its history, while KoB would provide detailed coverage. History of Bohemia could also be merged into KoB, as could possibly History of the Czech lands. Olessi (talk) 02:17, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the notice. Which way would you propose? - Darwinek (talk) 08:32, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
The bulk of "Bohemia" is its history section, most of which can be moved instead to "Kingdom of Bohemia". "Bohemia" would then have a summary of the region's history (including post-1918) and could also include information about modern Bohemia (regions, culture, etc.). The historical kingdom is certainly notable enough to warrant a separate article, but I'm not yet sure how best to differentiate its content from information at Template:History of the Czech Republic. Olessi (talk) 23:59, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
- It makes sense. Go for it! - Darwinek (talk) 08:33, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
Request for help at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion
There is currently a deletion discussion going on for a topic which is claimed to be an obscene symbol in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The discussion can be found at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Píča (2nd nomination). (Sorry if this offends anyone -- I don't speak Czech and the obscenity doesn't carry through to English-speakers.) I note that the Czech Wikipedia has an article about this topic, but it is very difficult to find reliable sources about it in English. Could anyone confirm whether or not the article in question is true, and if possible, identify any possible reliable sources? Thanks. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 01:58, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme
As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.
- The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
- The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
- A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.
Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.
Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Currently, 2655 articles are assigned to this project, of which 240, or 9.0%, are flagged for cleanup of some sort. (Data as of 14 July 2008.) Are you interested in finding out more? Barnstar Images 2
As I came here to grab a barnstar for someone, I again noticed how hideous the image for our highest order is, and I thought I would resurrect the debate over that image. Last time we had this debate I created this image as a replacement, which is basically a cleaner version of the existing one but one which didn't gain consensus last time, so this time I thought I would try something completely different and created this one. Have a peek and tell me what you think, and whether I should improve it (and in what way), or grab the psd's (linked to from the files) and have a shot yourself. +Hexagon1 (t) 03:19, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Czech Republic
Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.
We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.
A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.
We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! Hi! I have a question about the categories of the following artistic gymnasts. Do you think they had to be categorized only as Category:Czechoslovak artistic gymnasts? Or do you think they had to be categorized as Category:Czechoslovak artistic gymnasts and also as Category:Czech artistic gymnasts?
Josef Bochníček, Ladislav Bubeníček, Josef Čada, Stanislav lndruch, Miroslav Klinger, Josef Malý, Zdeněk Opočenský, Josef Pagáč, František Pecháček, Robert Pražák, Václav Stolař, Svatopluk Svoboda, Ladislav Vácha, František Vaněček, Václav Wirt
Many thanks in advance and kind regards Doma-w (talk) 20:06, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
- In an unfortunate twist of timing, I was aking the exact same question at WT:CATP as Doma-w was asking this here. -- ratarsed (talk) 20:10, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
- I think they should be categorized by both categories. Same way as we use e.g. Soviet and Russian, Ukrainian etc. categories at the same time. - Darwinek (talk) 13:54, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
- That seems to contradict the policy of how flags should be used in infoboxes, and I think that categorisation should be done in the same spirit (see also: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Categories#Nationality categories); after all, it seems wrong to categorise people against a country that was never a country in their lifetime. WP:MOSFLAG goes on to say that flags should not be used to indicate birth or death places, as this may imply an incorrect citizenship or nationality; and should only be used if their is a strong affiliation, such as to show the representative nationality of players. -- ratarsed (talk) 11:26, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
Not strictly Czech Republic related, but there's a request on the AfD to ask Czech or Slovak speakers about it, and I recall there being at least one Czech speaker here. Thanks! TravellingCari 11:51, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
Help request: 163 Czech Republic-related articles needing geographical coordinates
Based on a search of Wikipedia's articles related to Czech Republic, I've found some articles that I believe are about places in Czech Republic, and could usefully have geographical coordinates added.
The articles in question are listed in Category:Czech Republic articles missing geocoordinate data. At the time of writing, some examples included:
- Bílina River
- Cidlina River
- Jihlava District
- Komorní scéna Aréna
- Lipany (Vitice)
- Olomouc District
- Prague Metronome
...and there are many more, as well. At the time of posting this notice, there were 163 articles in this category needing geographical coordinates.
Why add coordinates?
By adding coordinates, a Wikipedia reader can easily view the location on a street map, nautical chart, topographic map, by satellite photo, realtime weather map, and in many other ways. Coordinate data makes an article eventually appear in various services such as Google Maps' Wikipedia overlay, Google Earth, and Wikipedia's own internal map service. Coordinate data also helps readers looking for geographically-based data, such as locations near a reference point, or related information.
How can I do it?
The articles are all marked with {{coord missing}} tags, which need to be replaced with {{coord}} tags that contain the location's latitude/longitude coordinates; or you might be able to add coordinates to an existing infobox. You can find out how to do this at the Wikipedia:Geocoding how-to for WikiProject members. Please let me know if this is useful, or if you have any questions! -- The Anome (talk) 11:38, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.
All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.
If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none
parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Masaryk University Press
Hi, There is discussion going on at Talk:Greek love about a book published by the above press. - Generally, Masaryk University is State university, second oldest in the Czech rep. and the MU Press is notable book publisher. AFAIK every published book must be in accordance with standard strict requirements, as peer review, academic degree of author etc. Of course print of every book is paid by the University and authors are normally paid (but not so much ,-).For further information see http://www.muni.cz/press/general --Yopie 22:07, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

- I was thinking about helping you with this and so I had a look at the Czech Wikipedia article once more. I must say that it seems to be quite bad. It is not neutrally written and also contains some questionable statements. Most statements lack sources and therefore are not possible to verify and I am quite reluctant to write about something, which I am not sure whether it is true or not. If you have the sources, maybe you could start with adding them to the Czech article. However, the article needs quite a lot of work and I am not sure, whether I will be able to do it in such a short time. But if you provide the sources, I will try. If you have the sources, maybe you could start with adding them to the Czech article. However, the article needs quite a lot of work and I am not sure, whether I will be able to do it in such a short time. But if you provide the sources, I will try. New section on project's main page: Articles needing cleanup
Hello Czech WikiProject. Currently, you can join the discussion at Rfc regarding biographies of living people. There is a possibility of prodding/speedy deleting of all unreferenced biographies of living persons, counting more than 40,000 articles. I added an useful cleanup listing subscription to the project's main page; this tool could help us find unreferenced BLP's related to the Czech Republic and check the process more carefully. A cleanup listing for our project should be generated shortly by WolterBot. For further information see relevant links. If you have any objections or suggestions, please direct your comments here. Thank you. --Vejvančický (talk) 13:54, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

Unreferenced Czech related BLPs
Here is a list of all unreferenced BLPs in the Category:Czech people stubs, created with the help of this tool. Anyone interested is invited to help with cleanup. You can also generate similar lists for all categories.
The updated and improved list contains also the result of intersecting of [[Category:All_unreferenced_BLPs]] and talk page template {{WikiProject Czech Republic}}.
Happy editing. --Vejvančický (talk) 15:16, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

The theatre Sklep represents an important part of the Czech culture in last decades of the 20th century, many of its core members have became significant in various professions. White Carpathians
I have a disagreement with the user Nmate on whether or not to keep the Hungarian name for the White Carpathians. which are located on the Czech - Slovak border http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:White_Carpathians. There isn't a Hungarian minority in the area where the White Carpathians are located. So I yhink the Hungarian name is not relevant.

Unreferenced living people articles bot
User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project. There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.
The unreferenced articles related to your project can be found at >>>Wikipedia:WikiProject Czech Republic/Archive 2/Unreferenced BLPs<<<
If you do not want this wikiproject to participate, please add your project name to this list.
Thank you.
- Update: Wikipedia:WikiProject Czech Republic/Archive 2/Unreferenced BLPs has been created. This list, which is updated by User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects daily, will allow your wikiproject to quickly identify unreferenced living person articles.
- There maybe no or few articles on this new Unreferenced BLPs page. To increase the overall number of articles in your project with another bot, you can sign up for User:Xenobot_Mk_V#Instructions.

Hello. Recently, I found several articles on participants of this competition, see Jan Bendig, Dominika Stará. Czech Wikipedia redirects the names of all of the members (except the winner Martin Chodúr) to the main article Česko Slovenská Superstar. CFD nomination
You may be interested in voicing your opinion at current CFD nomination. The nominator attempts to rename all categories about cities, towns and villages into "populated places" categories. This also relates to the Czech Republic and Slovakia-related categories. Just for the reminder, we use already a proper categorization scheme, where města (cities and towns) and obce (villages) are clearly differentiated. Current CFD nomination attempts to put all of them into generic "populated places" categories, creating a total confusion. - Darwinek (talk) 11:19, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

- Listed. - filelakeshoe 20:43, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
- Czech Tramping movement was an important element of the Czech culture from the 1920s. In the 1930s, it was a real mass movement, affecting Czech film, literature, music etc. During the World War II, "Czech tramps" represented a part of the anti-nazi resistance (Western writer and tramp Bob Hurikán was sentenced to death for his anti-nazi activities)[5]. After the war, the movement was suppressed by the communist régime as a kind of revolt inspired by the American culture (Western, Country etc.)[6]. It was also considered as a remnant of the bourgeoisie culture of the Czechoslovak First Republic. The topic is definitely notable, even though the article here is written like an essay. Czech tramping is an interesting part of the Czech culture and society for many decades. Please, do not confuse with Homelesáci.--Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 09:11, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

Czech Republic articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release
Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.
We would like to ask you to review the Czech Republic articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.
We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

German exonyms for place names
The current list of German exonyms for the Czech Republic shows that the former Schneiderhof is now called Mysliv. I have a suspicion that this is incorrect, that Schneiderhof is no longer in existence, and that it's former site is, instead, very close to the present Vseruby u Kdyne (Vseruby). I would like to know the sources or citations of the supposed Schneiderhof/Mysliv connection and to verify their accuracy. William H. "Bill" Brown.Wilbro1 (talk) 20:21, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
- Hello. According do German Wikipedia, the village of Myslív (German: Schneiderhof) was a part of Všeruby u Kdyně, but in 1955 was abandoned. That was probably because of expulsion of Germans from Sudetenland after World War II. Many settlements were deserted because of that. - Darwinek (talk) 21:03, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
Hello Darwinek: Thank you for responding. I have ancestors from Schneiderhof and I have come to understand that the old Schneiderhof was near Vseruby. Trying to locate their ancestral home (Schneiderhof) has been very difficult due to Schneiderhof being listed on the exonym page as the current Mysliv. This is misleading because there is a village named Mysliv further to the east in the Czech Republic and just south of Nepomuk. I was erroneously led to look there for my ancestral home. It seems to me that the exonym entry should be modified to reflect that the former Schneiderhof is not the current Mysliv but is, in fact, a deserted site near Vseruby (0.9 miles west northwest). This is my first time to try to discuss this with someone so I would like other opinions and maybe a suggestion about how to make the change if you agree that it should be done. Bill BrownWilbro1 (talk) 18:22, 14 February 2011 (UTC)
- Sure, feel free to make the change. By the way, here is a link to the Czech website storing information about deserted villages in the Czech Republic. It says the population of this small village was ethnically German. Germans were expelled after WWII and the village was deserted. After 1945 it was briefly "re-settled" by Czechs, but they were forced to move as the village was located in the sensitive border area. In the early 1970s the area of the former village was cleared and the security border zone of the communist Czechoslovakia was located there. Today there are no buildings left there. - Darwinek (talk) 18:42, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

- I've done all but one of them, which is the bold part of this sentence from the cs.wiki article:
- O rok později opět vyhrála Zlatého slavíka, avšak cenu musela převzít v ústraní redakce časopisu Mladý svět kvůli začínající normalizaci.
- I simply don't know what that means, but the current translation makes no sense.
- Also while we're here can we please stop overtranslating every song name and band name in article text? (and preferably in real life too?) It's really annoying! The version of this I edited translated Chcete mě? as you show me? (without the Czech name) which is not only disastrous, but names are not supposed to translate in the 21st century! I know English historically is horrifically Slavophobic as a language, but there's really no need to replace every mention of Sto Zviřat (as in the Ska band) with "100 animals" or N.O.H.A. with "Foot" just because this is English Wikipedia, else we also move Kryštof Harant z Polžic a Bezdružic to Christopher the Bastard from Afterspoon and Withoutsatellites. Czech people don't walk around saying their favourite song is "Nespavost" by "Nevěřící". Just sayin'. - filelakeshoe (SAVE WIKIPEDIA) 17:05, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

Ice hockey players - article names
Hello. I am letting you know, that one user created hundreds of stubs about mostly Czech and Slovak ice hockey players and rendered their names without diacritics. I moved some of them to diacriticized names but the user reverted my moves. He still opposes diacritics in "his" articles, although as you know, they are used throughout Wikipedia. Also the rest articles on ice hockey players have names with diacritics. Even the WikiProject Ice Hockey allows them to be used. For affected articles, see e.g. Martin Hlavacka, David Kveton, Adam Polasek and Frantisek Ptacek. - Darwinek (talk) 10:18, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
- The names should be corrected, they are deformed as they are now. The current state of the above mentioned atricles lowers the accuracy of Wikipedia. That's my only conclusion. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 11:02, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
- Agreed. I'd suggest a WP:RM. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 17:11, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
- Hmm, the "owner" of these articles writes in an edit summary undo move to invoke Bold, Revert, Discuss cycle yet I don't see much discussion going on? Don't get me wrong, English used to mutilate Slavic names. I know when it comes to people notable in earlier centuries we have the option of using a Slavophobic equivalent which was used predominantly in English sources (e.g. Bronislava Nijinska), but that's because at that time that was the common way of doing things, especially since a lot of people had a variant of their name written in Cyrillic. Nowadays it really isn't, you leave diacritics where they are, especially in an encyclopedia. Either way you definitely don't just remove the diacritics without transcribing the name properly. Yes, I guess there is an argument that most English language sources will use the name without diacritics, but this is just down to laziness, and I think there's a point when you draw the line and say if a source can't spell someone's name right, it's not a reliable source. - filelakeshoe 09:57, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

Question
Hello. While browsing I noticed this category: Category:Aircraft manufactured by the Czech Republic and Czechoslovakia and began thinking about the category names of related subcategories, namely the use of adjective "Czechoslovakian". Do you think adjective "Czechoslovak", which is used in various categories throughout EN Wiki, would be more proper? Any thoughts? - Darwinek (talk) 08:38, 8 May 2011 (UTC)
- My personal opinion on (Czecho)slovak/-ian is that it only exists because if you say "Slovakia" to an English person they automatically think "Slovakian" is the demonym because it sounds like it should be. Fundamentally it's as incorrect as calling Dutch people "Hollish", but because it's a common mistake it's made its way into the dictionary. I'm sure sources about (Czecho)slovakia, written by people who've been there and have knowledge would use "Slovak" and "Czechoslovak" more commonly than "Slovakian" and "Czechoslovakian". The former two do seem to be far more used on Wikipedia, sure - filelakeshoe 17:30, 8 May 2011 (UTC)
- (I actually have "Slovakian" in my shoot-on-sight.) - filelakeshoe 17:34, 8 May 2011 (UTC)
- It's always dangerous to base these things on personal opinion. The Oxford Dictionary allows "Slovakian", "Czechoslovakian" and "Czechoslovak" as both adjectives and nouns. "Slovak" is a native or national of Slovakia or a person of Slovak descent or the language. So none is incorrect and only "Slovak" has a more precise meaning. --Bermicourt (talk) 17:59, 8 May 2011 (UTC)
- The point is that we have sort of naming dualism here on Wikipedia. Categories related to Slovakia use almost exclusively the form "Slovak". Same with Czechoslovakia, only several categories and also articles about Czechoslovakia use the form "Czechoslovakian", instead of "Czechoslovak". - Darwinek (talk) 18:21, 8 May 2011 (UTC)
- Hm, fair enough. Merriam-Webster disagrees and says "Slovak" can be an adjective and a noun. And this definitely reflects usage. I'd support using Slovak/Czechoslovak rather than the -ian forms. - filelakeshoe 21:08, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
- Sounds like it doesn't matter as long as we're consistent and explain somewhere that we've gone for "-vak(ian)" rather arbitrarily but for reasons of consistency. --Bermicourt (talk) 11:13, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

Some people have expressed their concerns that the article is focused too much on Eastern European countries. None of the countries is a part of Eastern Europe. The area of today's Czech Republic was, for almost all its history, connected culturally with the Western world. In the second half of the 20th century my nation became a part of the mighty Soviet empire. The consequences were terrible: murdering, arresting, expelling of the intelligentsia, fear etc. However, the 40-year-lasting Soviet dominance has another consequence. My country is still perceived as a part of the Eastern world. I noticed the same thing at my RfA (... we need more Eastern European admins ... ) It is funny and sad at the same time. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 07:03, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, agreed - it is funny and sad, if it comes from the pen of contributors to Wikipedia (while everyone here can read so nicely balanced articles on the subject - Central Europe and Eastern Europe..) - and western public generally. But it is really annoying and quite terrifying from the mouth of Sergey Lavrov.
- There really was actually such a situation, when he was explicitly asked in public - that he would not sort Czech Republic into the Eastern Europe (it was just in the ongoing debate over the missile defense shield stationed in CZ - note: and we are there the Eastern Europe again). His response was immediate and stinging - that according to the UN classification, Czech Republic simply belongs to Eastern Europe - and that's it.
- So it seems, that we have one more inheritance from that Soviet times: this stupid Europe division seems to be codified forever within the UN mummified structures..
- Sorry for being offtopic
- But maybe - to bring atention to the discussion about Eastern Europe definition is not that off topic after all --Reo + 09:47, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
- You guys expect too much :) My country is one of the most geographically ignorant in the world, and don't get me started on America. My family mostly think I live in Czechoslovakia. You would expect editors of an encyclopedia to know better, but sadly, the amount of xenophobia and geographic ignorance on en.wikipedia is quite shocking. - filelakeshoe 10:01, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
- I think this is turning into a debate which is more properly carried out elsewhere. I suspect, though, that there are various definitions for "Eastern Europe" so don't expect a neat answer. For many English-speakers "Eastern Europe" became almost synonymous with "Eastern Bloc", so you are not going to shift that perspective easily. And why does it matter - it's simply a geographical description? Isn't it? --Bermicourt (talk) 11:11, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
- You are right, Bemicourt, we can do little to change it and the discussion here is pointless. But I don't think it is a matter of a simple "geographical description". Small and young European nations still struggle for their self-determination. Their point of view is different from long-established powers, they feel threatened (history gave them lessons many times) and they still need to defend themselves. Perhaps that's why I feel disappointed when someone call me an "Eastern European". My identity is different. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 11:55, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

Czechia
I have seen the name Czechia used and it is a redirect to the Czech Republic article. Is Czechia an accepted alternative to Czech Republic in the literature? Is is an official alternative? It's certainly less of a mouthful. Cheers. --Bermicourt (talk) 08:28, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
- It is "official", but it hasn't caught on in English unlike in other languages cs:Česko, de:Tschechien, so the article is named Czech Republic. Not sure if this has come up but there's definitely an argument among Czechs that the name "Česko" to describe the current state is misleading, while others (as you can see from the talk page) eschew "Česká Republika" as their perpetually despised politicians trying to censor something. Either way, Czech Republic is the most commonly used form in English. - filelakeshoe 12:04, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

There are many reasons why the English Wikipedia should be written in English, and this is one of the strongest."[8]. - Such an idiotic battle makes no sense, Darwinek. Perhaps it is time to accept the fact that Wikipedia is not "the sum of all human knowledge" (I admit that I find this phrase laughable and pompous), but rather a short-sighted project limited by cultural differences. It looks that the accent marks could be really harmful to the mental state of an average English reader, and it is more important than providing correct information. It is a step back, and that's the most disappointing thing for me. I'm starting to think it would be better to give it up rather than adopt this disgraceful style of arguing. Possible hoax, edit-war issue
Please see Czechia (one-word name of the Czech Republic) This article has been created, redirected, and blanked repeatedly. - This isn't a hoax. The article to which it redirects now is accurate about the issue. The government is trying to promote a one-word name, for simplicity reasons, but it sounds artificial to most, so it's controversial (it also sounds kinda Bohemia-centric, ignoring Moravia and Silesia). RFC ar Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (use English)
There has been a brewing issue at WP:RM over WP:HOCKEY recommendations and how they should be applied over WP:COMMONNAME and WP:UE. Basically the hockey recommendation is that Diacritics shall be applied to all player pages, where appropriate as for the languages of the nationalities of the players in question. This is in fact a mandate that does not allow consideration of any other policy on naming. I think we need to resolve the issue of which naming convention we use for ice hockey players. Is it the one for the names of everyone else based on existing policy and guidelines, or do we have a blanket exception for one project? List of castles in the Plzeň Region
I'm trying to figure out sources to properly disambiguate List of castles in the Plzeň Region, but the one English source is not as extensive as the list. I'm not sure if the list needs to be drastically reduced or if there simply isn't an English source for me to use. Anyone have an opinion on how to deal with this? Thanks, --JaGatalk 19:15, 24 February 2012 (UTC)
- The beginning of the list is pretty weird, I've never heard of places like Ballymotte or BoomShakaLaka in the Plzeň Region. The words are not Czech or German. Some of the names are funny but totally made up/nonexistent. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 12:46, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
- Heh, I hadn't noticed that. So OK, we know there is definitely vandalism in this list. Any suggestions for what I should use to clean it up? One of the problems is this list uses the names of the buildings, not the town they're in. In many cases they're one and the same, but for example I came across this, which is clearly the source of the Záluží entry in the list, but there's no town of Záluží nearby - that's just the name of the building. Some entries use the building name instead of the town - such as Bělá Castle. I wonder if they should all be like that - so-and-so Castle or so-and-so Chateau (or House). --JaGatalk 20:00, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Is Czechia deprecated on Wikipedia?
Hi, I'd just like to understand whether the official English name "Czechia" is deprecated or banned on English Wiki in favour of the more common "Czech Republic". I had always assumed both were acceptable and neither was wrong. The reason is that User:Mewulwe is making mass changes without discussion from "Czechia" to "Czech Republic". Before I revert them, I would like to understand the project's view. I have left a comment on Mewulwe's talk page asking him not to make any more changes before we have had a discussion here. --Bermicourt (talk) 07:28, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
- Since it appeared to be used commonly on here, it would seem not. Obviously there are differing opinions on this and Mewulwe should wait for a consensus rather than full-scale mass-reverting and edit warring the addition out. It should atleast have some history in the Name of the Czech Republic article, which has repeatedly been removed. – Connormah (talk) 13:52, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
- False premise and false logic. It is not used commonly on here, I changed maybe 80 articles and that was about all there was, aside from its being mass-replicated in some template code. And even if it was in more common use here, that would certainly not indicate that it is OK, since a lot of deprecated or plain wrong things can be found hundred- or thousandfold among millions of articles. Most occurrences seem to be added (1) by non-native English speakers who assume "Czechia" based on the existence of an equivalent being in common use in their language, such as the German "Tschechien", and (2) by certain Czech "Czechia"-pushers like User:Neewi, who want to abuse Wikipedia to bring it into common use. No "history" has been removed, only Neewi's nonsense. Mewulwe (talk) 14:34, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
- According to naming policy, we must use most common name in English. This is "Czech republic", not "Czechia". And one remark - User:Mewulwe is not making changes, but he is defending status quo, as some anon massively changed "Czech republic" to "Czechia".--Yopie (talk) 14:27, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
- Well, not entirely true. Having learned that it is an official English version name approved by the Czech government, I frequently use it in articles, which is why I picked up that Mewulwe was changing every instance, in some cases to "Czech lands" which sounds even less common or official. But I am not here to argue a POV, I wish to understand what the project consensus is - I thought I did. --Bermicourt (talk) 17:16, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
- You must have "learned" that on Wikipedia. It is simply not true. The only official name is Czech Republic. Czechia was informally suggested, but, not having caught on, it is no longer used even by the Czech government (just search the two terms on gov.cz, it's 2,690 to 12, and the latter are all but one the proper name of some company). "Czech lands" is the correct historic term for the area for the time before there was a Czech Republic. Mewulwe (talk) 18:01, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
- Well, funnily enough the article on Czech Republic says "In 1993, the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs suggested the name Czechia as an official alternative in all situations other than formal official documents and the full names of government institutions; however, this has not become widespread in English, even though most other languages have single-word names for the country (usually their own variants of "Czechia")." Moreover this site states "Czechia is the official one-word name of the Czech Republic. In 1993 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic in its memorandum to all Czech embassies and diplomatic missions recommended to use the full name "Czech Republic" only in official documents and titles of official institutions. In all other cases, the one-word name Czechia should be preferred."
- So does anyone other than Mewulwe have a view? Can anyone point me to a Wikipedia rule or convention that bans "Czechia" as an alternative name for this country? --Bermicourt (talk) 20:13, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
- Inasmuch as you're reading the quoted sentence as contradicting what I said, it is wrong, and thus, as I said, you're getting misinformed by Wikipedia. The word "suggested" is correct, the word "official" isn't; obviously both don't go together, either something is official or merely suggested. The fact is it was only suggested, and has long since been given up, and has no official standing whatsoever. The site czechia.org is, of course, a private site trying to push the name with the usual false claims as they're repeated by Neewi (who may well be behind that site, since it links to the same text he keeps posting). I'm at a loss as to why you thought this worth citing as if it was some reliable source. Mewulwe (talk) 21:26, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

I don't believe the name "Czechia" is banned, but it is contrary to good practice to use it in place of "Czech Republic" to refer to the contemporary state because it simply is not common use. It could be used to refer to "the territory of the present day Czech Republic" when speaking in a historical context (this is where "Czech lands" comes in) but I'm struggling to think of many examples when it's not better just to specify Bohemia/Moravia/Silesia or name the historical state in question (first republic, Austria-Hungary or whatever). - filelakeshoe 09:56, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
- It just seems to me that "Czechia" is a useful shorthand for the long-winded full title in the same way that "Britain" or "United States" are shorthand for the full titles of those nations. However, my real issue is that one user is unilaterally imposing a blanket ban on "Czechia" when I have seen no Wikipedia decision or policy that supports that action. "Czechia" is not wrong, just uncommon and clearly disliked by some, those are not reasons IMHO to expunge every occurrence. That seems like pushing a POV to me. I am not going around changing every occurrence of "Czech Republic" to "Czechia"; please afford me the same courtesy, unless you can point to a rule banning it. --Bermicourt (talk) 12:32, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
- You are not doing it, but others are, and that's the problem here, which is what I was counteracting. Otherwise I wouldn't be concerned about the occasional "Czechia" here and there, in proportion to its general use. Personally I don't think there is anything intrinsically wrong with the term, and wouldn't mind if it became more popular. I am only against abusing Wikipedia to facilitate this. Mewulwe (talk) 13:50, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
- Your request is entirely justified. I can see no harm for this project in using both the names. Personally, I think this has a lot to do with Bohemian and Moravian nationalism. The word "Czechia" (in Czech Česko or Čechie) refers rather to Bohemia and omits Moravia and Silesia. Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 13:07, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
- Okay, thanks guys, I'm beginning to understand this better. I won't revert any of Mewulwe's changes to date, as long as I'm free to use either term in a reasonable way without risk of reversion. Is that fair? --Bermicourt (talk) 15:56, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
- Definitely. I have no objections. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 13:01, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

BLP moved
Not sure what the Project's guidelines are for (1) lede or (2) title, but personally think accuracy is of prime concern for lede line of BLPs. (for example Radomír Vašek moved to Radomir Vasek and Tomáš Anzari to Tomas Anzari, both without discussion or WP:RM not sure how many more..) In ictu oculi (talk) 05:25, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
- "Radomír Vašek (born 23 September 1972) and professionally known as Radomir Vasek" seriously, just when I thought the anti-diacritics league couldn't possibly make up any funnier bullshit, they did.
- I agree with you that these moves are utter nonsense, as well as the linguistically fallacious argument that "Tomas Anzari is Tomáš Anzari in English", but this discussion has been going round in circles for months now and I'm bored of it already. As for whether its a BLP issue, I just wonder how that barely known ice hockey player whose article kick started all this nonsense would feel if he knew about it. He'd probably find it pretty funny. - filelakeshoe 09:49, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
- Uff, no. It's here again. This was discussed on highest levels, including Jimbo's talk and a widely attended RfC. All that without any sensible result. I don't want to restart or join the useless chatter again, it makes no sense. On the other hand, the 'utter nonsense' cited above might be funny, but it looks like a very bad joke in an encyclopedia. It's difficult to accept that. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 12:51, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
- Good Lord. I always thought the standard protocol with names including diacritics was to have the article name be "complete" with all applicable diacritics and then have various redirects coming from non-diacritical spellings. Tomas redirects automatically to Tomáš, etc. Florestanová (talk) 01:30, 3 April 2012 (UTC)
- The problem is that we are supposed to use English language sources, not invent our own protocol. Often they don't use diacritics, presumably because they don't mean anything to most English speakers. I think the key is to ensure both versions are in the lede and to provide an easy guide to pronunciation. --Bermicourt (talk) 06:15, 3 April 2012 (UTC)
- But some of the population's ignorance of the function of diacritical marks is not a reason to misspell things in our encyclopedia. I've just had a look around at a handful of articles about, say, famous French and Spanish people whose names include diacritical marks, and their names are spelled correctly in the title and lede without much agony on anyone's part. Czech should be no different, in my humble opinion. Florestanová (talk) 20:52, 3 April 2012 (UTC)
- I did not say that. I simply explained why I think reliable sources don't use diacritics. We are in danger of promoting our own invented Wiki rules over using reliable sources. I appreciate that native speakers don't usually like other languages changing their words, but hey, that's what happens and we need to go with the sources. London is called "Londres" and Wales is called "Pays de Galles" in some quarters! --Bermicourt (talk) 06:24, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
- Reliable sources like here and here? Doesn't seem to be an "invented Wiki rule" to me... Cloudz679 08:18, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
- Anyone can be selective and Encyclopaedia Britannica is not recognised by some as reliable, because it's a tertiary source like Wikipedia. However, if this issue was black and white, it wouldn't have rumbled on so long. I frankly, don't care which way we do it - I argued for dropping the "ß" in German article names, but the debate went the other way and I happily get on with it using the "ß" and going with the consensus. What we need here is to have a logical and mature debate in line with Wiki guidelines, reach a consensus and stick with it. The main aim is not getting obscure diacritics approved or disapproved, but to add to the sum of human knowledge. --Bermicourt (talk) 11:39, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

- Move discussion to Talk:Radomír Vašek please. I don't recognise those two stats sources as being reliable for how to spell things right since one says he played in a championship in "Pilzen", and the other says his name is pronounced "VAH-sek", both of which are simply wrong. Remember that RS isn't as black and white as "source X is reliable", it's "source X is reliable for statement Y". Those sources are great for sourcing stats, apparently not for spelling and pronunciation, and that's not their purpose. - filelakeshoe 19:47, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
- I think the problem with previous RfC was it failed to distinguished BDP from BLP. If a tightening of current WP:BLP guidelines at WT:BLP was implemented, the remaining 70-80 egregious sports BLPs could be fixed painlessly and this constant disruption ended. In ictu oculi (talk) 06:05, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
- Hmm. Going against what I just said, I just came across Talk:Martin Čech, which was so outrageous, that sometimes an exception is needed.
- Vejvančický. Looking at the history (of which I wasn't aware) I can understand why you are sick of trying. However, I think the atmosphere has changed. When I sent out 100+ invitations for the WT:BLP (with Beyoncé Knowles picture, I deliberately didn't add one on your Talk page because of your comment above) I was surprised to see how overwhelming support for WP:MOSPN#Diacritics was among the last 30 days RMs. Fully 90 of the 100 I sent the Beyoncé Knowles invitation to were in favour of accurate spelling of living persons names. I think as the saying goes "the worm has turned" (per Shakespeare: "The smallest worm will turn, being trodden on" Henry VI, part III). In ictu oculi (talk) 00:17, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

Cultural Heritage
Hello, I'm trying to update List of heritage registers to make it a little more globally representative; the Czech Republic did not previously feature - but there's these articles on the Czech and German Wikipedias - (in Czech) Seznam národních kulturních památek České republiky, (in German) Liste der Nationalen Kulturdenkmale Tschechiens - and I think these feature on MonumNet [11]; I don't know whether anyone with the relevant knowledge/skills/interest would be interested in translating these and/or starting an introductory page to the country's officially designated/protected/promoted cultural heritage (don't know if there's also eg folk/intangible heritage that's officially recognized in addition to these monuments) as it features on heritage registers? If not, I am, but am unlikely to do it for a few years, thanks, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 11:19, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

RM again. Since I've been creating lots of Czech station articles, coming up with a naming convention would be nice. - filelakeshoe 15:58, 12 June 2012 (UTC)
- That is at least showing on the Article Alerts requested moves on project front page. Tomas Knotek → Tomáš Knotek etc, and Ondrej Palat → Ondřej Palát are not showing. I wonder if it is a delay, or due to them being subsidiary moves in a multiple move discussion? In ictu oculi (talk) 03:45, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
Bunch of BLP articles without diacritics
Hey all,
I was reviewing several previous discussions of diacritics in article titles, and came across the below list of hockey players, all of whom have been stripped of diacritics in the article titles. I speak a little Czech, and was confused to no end as to the correct pronunciation until I read the article lead. Thoughts on changing them? I'm currently involved in an RFC on article titles, so it would be unwise for me to move them myself.
Cheers, Zaldax (talk) 03:21, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
- Hello Zaldax. The articles listed above (and many more) were created by the abusive user Dolovis, already banned from editing. Having BLP articles in incorrect form is quite controversial, but I would suggest going through WP:RM and suggesting there the correct forms. - Darwinek (talk) 07:26, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
- And as long as you realise that 99% of the English-speaking world has absolutely no clue what the diacritics mean or how to produce them. Along with most of the English language press! --Bermicourt (talk) 19:03, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
- I do realize that, but I personally believe that BLP's should have their correct name - most English speakers tend to ignore diacritics they can't pronounce, but for those who know what they mean their presence is a huge help. In any case, these articles have all been listed at RM by another user. Cheers, Zaldax (talk) 17:15, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
- A couple of those are included in the 50x I just put in to WP:RM. It's going to be a tiring job requiring three more big batches of 30x to correct all of Dolovis' deliberate mispellings. However, best to do it "above board" - and it easier now given that consensus is evidently very strongly for correct spelling of living persons.
- @Bermicourt, what type of English-speakers do you mean? I would estimate at least half, more than half, of UK people know that Prošek is "Proshek". The subtleties, well, how many English-speakers know how to pronounce Colquhoun? That isn't a reason for mispelling the name Co-hoon. Correct spelling and correct pronunciation are apples and oranges. Pronunciation requires adding IPA symbols (if you're volunteering!) In ictu oculi (talk) 17:34, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
- Oops, there may be some redundancies, then; I just listed them, since I didn't see them in the 50x you included. The relevant discussions are below.
- Cheers, Zaldax (talk) 17:48, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
- I put the remaining 100x into WP:RM. The 30x Slovak ones as well. I think that's all now. In ictu oculi (talk) 08:45, 21 August 2012 (UTC)
