ABBAS (Ibn Abd il Muttalib, ′bn äbd il moo-tä′lîb), uncle of Mohammed; at first hostile to him, but ultimately – after the defeat at Bed'r (see Mohammed) – the chief promoter of his religion. He was the founder of the Abbasside (q. v.) caliphate at Bagdad.
