Wikisource:WikiProject Women Writers

From Wikisource
WikiProject Women Writers

Inspired by some of the other areas in Wikimedia, I have set up a project to start to improve the representation of women in fully transcribed works on Wikisource.

Project Overview

[edit]

This Project aims to improve the representation of women on Wikisource by:

  1. creating Author pages in coordination with WikiProject Women in Red
  2. locating quality scans of works written (or translated) by women
  3. providing fully transcribed works by women
  4. nominating works by women for the Monthly Challenge
  5. validating important works by women to become Featured texts
  6. connecting Wikisource Author and Work pages to library databases via Wikidata

I was inspired to start this as I have carried out some work in Wikisource for a previous job, and have also heard several people speak about the projects to get more women into Wikipedia, so thought I could combine the two areas.

Please feel free to add any suggestions or further points to look at in this area. I recognise that my own awareness of women authors is limited by my own personal research - so if you do have suggestions, particularly to further improve the diversity of the writers represented in other ways than ‘gender’, please go ahead.

Going forward, I would like to start doing themed monthly focuses to get content added, or link in this project to other Wikiprojects on other Wiki-platforms, but at the moment am just looking to get started.

Ongoing Works

[edit]

I don't really have any goals for this yet, so might just see how much I am able to get added and then add some metrics here. In the meantime, here are some other authors and works which I think could be next:

Author:Frances Trollope

Author:Catherine Crowe
The following works have external scans available:

Future:

  • Aristodemus: A Tragedy (1838) (external scan)
  • Men and Women; or, Manorial Rights (1843), 3 volumes (looking into finding external scans of this)
  • The Story of Lilly Dawson (1847)
  • The Night-side of Nature; or, Ghosts and Ghost-seers (1848)
  • Light and Darkness; or, Mysteries of Life (1850)
  • The Cruel Kindness: A Romantic Play, in Five Acts (1853)
  • Linny Lockwood: A Novel (1854)

Author:Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell
Some of this authors works have been published already, however Ruth has scans uploaded but text not yet created:

Author:Mary Elizabeth Braddon
Again, a few of the works have been created, but not Braddon's most well known novel:

  • Lady Audley's Secret - external scans available, look at in the future
  • Aurora Floyd - look at in the future

Author:Aphra Behn

  • 'The Rover'- external scans available, to look at in future

Author:Rachilde
Rachilde's wikipedia can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rachilde but they do not yet have a Wikisource entry - I will look into this, and get their work added.
Their most well-known work is Monsieur Venus, more information on this is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monsieur_V%C3%A9nus

Author:Mary Jane Seacole

  • Wonderful Adventures of Mrs Seacole in Many Lands - I will look into the availability of a scanned version of this

Author:Frances Harper

Author:Alice Moore-Dunbar Nelson
Wrote a collection of short stories and poems titled, Violets and Other Tales - look into finding a scan

Suggestions/Discussion

[edit]

Please feel free to add any suggestions or further points to look at here. I recognise that my own awareness of women authors is limited by my own personal research (currently, lots of Victorian women so apologies for the quite long works!) so if you do have any suggested works or writers to add to the list go ahead.
