First attested in c. 1693 as Middle Hindi بَرات (barāt),[1] inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit [Term?], from Sanskrit वरयात्रा (varayātrā), a compound of वर (vará, suitor, bridegroom, husband) +‎ यात्रा (yā́trā, journey), literally the groom's journey [to the bride].[2]
