From Proto-Turkic *bat-gak (sticky mud, bog), from *bat- (to sink, get bogged/stuck in mud). Cognate with Bashkir батҡаҡ (batqaq), Kyrgyz баткак (batkak), Kazakh батпақ (batpaq), Shor патқақ (patqaq), Karachay-Balkar батхакъ (batxaq, clay, mud), Uzbek botqoq, Uyghur پاتقاق (patqaq, sticky mud, bog), Turkmen batga (swamp, bog), Turkish batak (swamp, bog), etc.
