Inherited from Old East Slavic крꙑ (kry), from Proto-Slavic *kry, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *krū́ˀs, from Proto-Indo-European *krewh₂- (blood of a wound).

Cognate with Latin cruor (blood(shed)), Lithuanian kraujas, Welsh crau, English raw.
