Etymology
[edit]Superficially Latin monastērium, from Ancient Greek μοναστήριον (monastḗrion), but pending evidence for a particular Christian religious house in the territory, on which the town was founded around the year 796 by هَرْثَمَة بْنُ أَعْيَن الْهَاشِمِيّ (harṯama(t) bnu ʔaʕyan al-hāšimiyy), that association is presumably secondary, one would expect a Punic loan.
