Inherited from Proto-Turkic *k(i)aya (rock, mountain); cognate with Azerbaijani qaya, Bashkir ҡая (qaya), Tatar кыя (qıya), Turkmen gaýa, Uzbek qoya and Yakut хайа (qaya).
