[edit]From Middle Persian 𐭰𐭤𐭥 (chʿ /čahâr/), from Proto-Iranian *čaθwā́rah (compare Central Kurdish چوار (çwar, çiwar), Ossetian цыппар (cyppar), Avestan 𐬗𐬀𐬚𐬡𐬁𐬭𐬋 (caθβārō)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *čatwā́ras (compare Sanskrit चतुर् (catur)), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *kʷetwóres (compare Armenian չորս (čʻors), Lithuanian keturi, Latin quattuor, English four).
