Inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *krátuṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *krátuš, from Proto-Indo-European *krétus, from *kret- (“insight, intelligence”). Cognate with Ancient Greek κράτος (krátos), Avestan 𐬑𐬭𐬀𐬙𐬎 (xratu), Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐍂𐌳𐌿𐍃 (hardus).
