[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *gʰárṣati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gʰáršati, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰérs-e-ti, from *gʰers- (“to rub, scrape”). Cognate with Ancient Greek χαράσσω (kharássō), Proto-Slavic *gorxъ.
