Burmese

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *dzawŋ (to wait, watch for). Cognate with Mizo tsoŋ (id) (STEDT). STEDT apparently considers the Tibeto-Burman root to be possibly related to Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-klawŋ (to guard, tend cattle, graze, be at leisure) (whence ကျောင်း (kyaung:, to look after, tend)).[1]
