From Proto-Southwestern Tai *taːjᴬ² (“to die”), from Proto-Tai *p.taːjᴬ (“to die”). Cognate with Thai ตาย (dtaai), Lao ຕາຍ (tāi), Lü ᦎᦻ (ṫaay), Tai Dam ꪔꪱꪥ, Tai Nüa ᥖᥣᥭ (taay), Ahom 𑜄𑜩 (tay), Zhuang dai.
